I just thought about my way of drumming and I realized I was only looking at the notes and tried to remember certain grooves when playing songs. Then I looked up how I might be able to fix that and now I’m here. Great tips you got there. I will try and make it work for me because I’d like to play more freely without having to remember every single groove or even fill...
Man your lessons are great. Just doing your exercise has vastly improved my hands
Hey Jeff! You videos are so helpful! I agree beatboxing groves helps! Thank you for everything you do!!🥁🥁
So glad to hear they’re helping you out Lindsay!
Excellent lesson. I still find this "free state" one of the most challenging states to get into while for instance staying within the structure of a hard bop song or while reading a big band chart. Nonetheless, musically it is key!
Thanks Jeff!
It can be difficult to teach others how to feel the music. Love the Q&A approach, that could help those who struggle with putting things in the right place. Thanks for the video.
Yes, it’s so tricky to teach! This has always been a great place to start for me to get those creative juices flowing.
I took lessons and I learned that skill on my own. It was funny I be learning out of a drum set book. We go beat by beat and I learn the beat first then would play 8 bars then do that with a fill. After learning a beat sometimes he be go straight to the 8 bars with the fill.
I know this is an older video and you probably won't see this but MAN this helped me more than any other drumming tutorial I've seen. It has shifted my mind away from being hyper focused on learning sheet music to being creative behind the kit. This is the true way to learn
Thats realy good sound
This kind of lesson keeps us motivated and bring light into our practice!! Thanks a million, Jeff!!!
Love and live this approach! Great lesson as always!
What a GREAT way to approach this. Nicely done!
Thank you sir!
Emphasize the space in the groove, especially in funk grooves.
Yessir!! Thanks for sharing Sir Randall
Thank you Jeff...I try these examples with enthusiasm...you are number 1for me...thanks
This is one of your best 👌 I completely get the whole having a conversation with yourself haha so good
This is great. Love your suggestions
Logic and reasoning supports your understanding, but it is ultimately emotion and feel what makes us express ourselves. Loved the Q&A idea! Great job as usual Jeff.
You are a great, great Teacher and a fantastic Musician! Thank you for this Video! 🌻🌻🌻

Super nice way to look at it Jeff.
This will be a great addition to "backbeat fills", the kind where you keep the 2 and 4 on the snare.
Absolutely, that’s a great call Nix.
Loved watching
Thanks Zach!
Very useful stuff to do when you start having enough vocabulary in a particular time-feel.
Always unique and helpful content from you Jeff. Keep going brother. Love from Bangladesh.
Much appreciated!

Good video Jeff!

Hi jeff, honestly your drumming is just solid man, I take a lot of inspiration from the way you play drums your feel and style is just so well worked.
How often do you practice and are you in a band??
You're amazing...
YOU are! :)

Really appreciate your support Richard!
I'm Here to listen to the tutorial my friend👍
Hope you dig it!
I drive my coworkers crazy because this is all I do at work “bum bum tsk chaka bum bum tsk” then I start mashing into my keyboard and the whole ward hears it since we work graveyard.
Great lesson , but I’m still struggling with last week’s lesson 😅
Would you also recommend playing a groove for extended periods of time so that it becomes autopilot?
👌
I like the phrase 'it's not a rocker science'.
Haha, yep. It’s just drumming!
And I like drumming very much...👍👍
I've been playing over 30 years. Always dreamed of taking off and chasing what you're doing. You have full time work?
Hey Jeff, please don't include yourself in the "we mere mortals" category 😊 you are an amazing drummer and an inspiration for all of us. Love the transcription sheet with the drum loops, it’s going to occupy me for the coming week or two. Your videos always have extra value, thanks so much from Italy.
Have you been learning English more these last few years?
