Yeah went on a sleeper train from Paris to Nice a few years ago - not much sleep and a noisy train tbh.Wouldnt mind trying a sleeper again but would have to be pretty luxurious.Looking forward to seeing this video Tim
Yes, several times when I still lived in Russia. I lived in Kaliningrad (which is Russia's exklave and is between Poland and Lithuania) and my relatives lived in Kasachstan. We first had to go to Moscow and then have to take a sleeper train to a particular town in Siberia, which took 3 days and then we were picked up by relatives and went by car. It was a good time, even if almost 30 years ago. You actually got to know a lot of people. :D I liked it a lot. Since then I love going by trains, but never had another sleeper train. My dream is of course Orient Express.
I live in the orange and cream condo building directly behind Tim in Emeryville at the start of his trip. If I'd known he was there, would have brought him down homemade cappuccino and banana bread to fortify him for his epic journey. Almost all of my favorite traveling UA-cam creators eventually end up at that Amtrak station.
Abroad in Japan says there are only two sleeper trains left in Japan? One to Tottori and from sunrise forward they announce each stop so you can sleep past about 6 a.m.?
As a Southern California local, I’ve always wanted to do this coastal Amtrak trip. There’s just something about getting insight about a local travel destination by a swish, British gent that hits different. Like. I’m enriched. If anyone knows trains, it’s the British after all! Side-note. I would be gutted not to see Tim portraying the next Bond. That would be well criminal. But instead of The Orient Express like in Russia With Love, it’s Amtrak along the U.S./Canada coast. It’d be a MUST WATCH.
My wife & I went on to from Brisbane to Melbourne which is a 2 night stay…I loved it but she didn’t. The train went super fast during the night and seemed to push you back into your beds. However, I loved watching the countryside go by when it was dark…A whole new feel when everyone was asleep and the train was so quiet. Having a cold beer watching the world go by…
The continuous horn blowing across eastern Colorado would be as a warning for traffic. I know, people do live in those little communities, especially along the railroad tracks which are usually close to a river or other body of water. There are herds of antelope and skunks and millions of birds and other wild life. That being said, I have ridden from Grand Junction to Denver on the Zephyr a few times living in the area most of my long life. That was plenty for me...Sleep!? Uh no. I appreciate your sacrifice 🚂😉 and I do love a good train ride. I went over in the spring a couple of years ago. Absolutely gorgeous. Happy Holidays to you and Gaby and Casper.🌲
Seems a very memorable experience. I just finished watching Jeb and Suzanne Brooks on their channel doing a trip on the Orient Express. The California Zephyr doesn't have the same level of luxury as the OE, but the Zephyr probably appeals to me more, and it's less harmful to your wallet. $1,989 is not bad at all.
My age is 65 and although I don't leave the house, I would like to thank Tim and Gabby for taking me on all their travels to places I thought I'd never see, I travel lightly and don't cost them a penny. So where we off next love ? Xxxx ❤️
The only sleeper train I have come close to doing is the Night Riviera (London to Penzance). Beautiful views, good food, meticulous staff, and friendly fellow travelers equals a trip you will probably never forget Tim.
I've ridden the California Zephyr many times. Always take the lower bunk. You also get the window at night. The reason the smoke stops were so short is that they were making up time to get you to Chicago on time. Bummer because Telluride (the highest station) is interesting. The train is just quickly turned around at Emeryville, so doesn't get a thorough cleaning. Thorough cleaning is done in Chicago. Tracks for the California Zephyr are owned by the freight companies, Amtrak just leases time on them. So they are not the best maintained and can get pretty rocky. Bummer about the toilet. Hopefully they can pull that car to fix it in Chicago.
Good to see Tim starting to get in sight of that 1 million subscriber mark. And no one will deserve it more than Tim (and Gaby!). Best channel on UA-cam 👍
I took the Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto in the summer. Coaches were stainless steel 1950s build but rode smoothly and were really comfortable although decor was dated but that was part of the charm. Food was pretty good and too. Was clean but door was not lockable. I had a bedroom for 2 which meant reasonable space. En-suite toilet was fine and communal shower was clean and plenty of warm water. Like Amtrak the meals were communal which was fine and the observation cars were great. All in all I think it was rather better than Amtrak. The only downside was that, as the tracks are owned by the freight companies so their trains get priority meaning that passenger trains get less priority meaning that the train can stand for up to 2 hours waiting for a very long freight train. We arrived 8 hours late! Never book onward transport without allowing at least 24 hours. I think Via Rail knocked spots off Amtrak even though the trains were over 70 years old.
As a railway enthusiast, this was great. A great experience and great scenery. To prepare such good food on a train and with so many people is quite an achievement. I have taken similar three-day rail trips through Scotland on three occasions. The food was very good but, like yourself, sleeping was not perfect. We also had much longer stops en route. The condition of your compartment was not great and the train is certainly showing some age. Taking everything into account I feel it was a reasonable cost; worth it, I think, just for the views. I am guessing that it has not changed your thoughts/views on sleeper trains! Thanks for being able to share with you a great journey.
Perhaps they should provide all guests with sick buckets and cans of air fresheners if the smell of sh*t keeps wafting into your rooms. I don't think I could bear that.
I am watching your video with my mother, and the 1st time you whispered that you could hear the people in the next cabin fart my mother burst out laughing and said, "Why is he whispering"? Let them hear you so they know you hear them. 😂 My mother is 90 yrs old and also loves your videos. She can't get enough of Casper.
My grandparents took me on my first train trip from Central CA to Sacramento when I was 8. Loved train travel ever since. I've made it a bucket list to travel on the CA Zephyr and other long Amtrak trips like the Coast Starlight and Southwest Chief in a roomliner. Thanks for the video!
First thing I’d have done is to ask for the room to be cleaned! The no lock thing is BS staff have master keys! food looked good. In need or some refurbishment!👍
As someone who adores the railway and is an railway enthusiast I’m so looking forward to watching this tonight. I would love to do something like this at one point as it’s a trip of a lifetime!
Since I live in the US and traveled a lot domestically the scenery wouldn’t equal out the bed, the smells and the forced communion with people I don’t know. Thanks for showing it to us though. Always appreciate your sacrifices. 🎉
Me and a buddy took a few pounds from LA to DC on a local greyhound route when i was in highschool. Took 5 days and nothing but crazy stories stopping in every low income bus stop from state to state. People are crazy
So in the mid 1960s, my Mom, brother and I took the train from Detroit to California. The stopover in Chicago, we switched to the California Zephyr. We spent our journey in general seating which was remarkably comfortable. I was 12 at the time so sleeping with multiple pillows and blankets worked out fine, no loss of sleep. Yes, rocks and boulders do end up on the tracks, so there were delays reaching California. The odd experience I had was an elder couple across from us that kept staring at me. I later asked my Mom about it and she said I reminded the couple of a child actor from the 1940s. Still the trip was fine and yes, it is a really old train. Thanks for sharing. We traveled during the summer.
Thank you so much for your thorough review. I have almost booked this train trip half a dozen times. Looking at the condition of the sleeper cabins really disappoints me, I expect more from our rails. Thank you once again!
Absolutely fantastic video 😊 train looks a bit tired and grubby though.. love your comment about “a bit of snow and the UK grinds to a halt, maybe for you guys in the Soft South, in the Highlands most things carry on as normal including the trains and buses! 😂
I'm British and have done a few Amtrak routes, never had a problem pulling the curtain and leaving the room. And have done that route your on in Feb', snow everywhere great vid' Tim.
I did this just last month but in a couchette. Loved every minute, the views, the dining, the friendly people I met during meals, the little towns and I slept like a log. The scenery was just stunning. I did miss my onward flight though due to delays so had an unexpected overnight in Chicago. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I did an Amtrak sleeper from NYC to Orlando a few years back. What I remember is being woken up by the constant horns on approach to road crossings. Not a good experience. NEVER again.
You should try the world famous Blue Train next Tim. Cleaning on the train could be better but other than that, it looks like a well run operation. It always looks weird to me to see homes with no fences or garden walls. Looks pretty. Spectacular mountains. Great job as always Tim.
Sooo excited to see you take this trip! I took the California Zephyr in June of 2022. It was a real dream trip for me (I travelled across America via train, from NYC to Washington DC then caught the Zephyr in Chicago, got off in Denver for couple of days then back on to San Francisco). I would highly recommend doing the Chicago to SF route as you go through the rockies during daylight and in the summer of course your view isn't so hampered by snow. I had a roomette for just me and it was ample. I used the bottom bunk so I could watch the sun rise and set. From Denver through the rockies we had a gentleman guiding us over the tannoy through the sights which really made the trip. The staff were soooo nice to me, even digging out an old tourist leaflet with the history of the train and info about all the towns we passed. With amtrak not being y'know 1st class travel I didn't expect too much in terms of luxuries and cleanliness so I bought my own wipes just to be safe but I'm not surprised by your findings. I suppose it just takes a few people not treating their room with respect to ruin it for others. I believe there is a photographic exhibition in London currently of a British photographer who took the train. I think if Amtrak took it seriously they could overhaul and make it something truly spectacular and charge a lot more money too. Although it's quite special that it's relatively affordable for normal Americans so you get to meet so many interesting people that you just don't when sticking to the usual touristy things.
Love sleeper trains. I remember as a kid doing the "TransKaroo" train in South Africa with my mom, sister, aunt and cousins from Cape Town to Johannesburg. I have not done the Amtrak train yet , but planning on it since I live in California. If you are ever in South Africa and want a real luxury experience, definitely book on Rovos Rail from Cape Town to Livingston , Zambia. The ultimate in luxury rail travel.
Not sure you got to see the best of Amtrak, Tim .I did the California Zephyr, about ten years ago, starting in Chicago and finishing in Sacramento. I took the Roomette option with my Dad. The room was clean and the communal toilet and shower just fine. We had no smells. Sleeping on a train worked for me and the rocking and ambient noise were not a problem. We got off in Sacramento which is nice and toured the Sierras for a week and visited Yosemite. We then headed south to Riverside and took the very Scenic Southwest Chief back to Chicago. The Roomette was cheap and worked out about the same as a hotel, hire car, food and attraction. I'd complain about the smell to Amtrak and the attendant, would have cleaned the room better, if you'd asked.
My teen and I did a 6 week railtour of the US last May. We did the Zephyr on the way back from San Francisco and it was a great trip. We had an unscheduled couple of hours at Grand Junction due to a small landslip but were otherwise very lucky and avoided any major delays. The butter cake is legendary!
Can’t wait to see Tim settle in for more than one night at a time. A pleasant surprise, what next? Tim raiding a mini bar and not worrying about the cost? Go Tim.
It's soooo shaking 😅 you're brave to even try to sleep. Although the views are amazing, what I loved the most in this video are the desserts 😊 thank you Tim!
Wow, you're in Emeryville! I used to work on the other side of the plaza. I'm a native to the Bay Area and haven't been or seen where you are in the beginning of this video in YEARS. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for mentioning that. I always take cleaning supplies with me also. Some places are not so clean. I am one of those people, who has to be careful because of my health. I love to travel. I can’t let the fear of germs stop me from traveling!
Love these travel video's Tim, keep them coming!!! Been on a few sleeper trains, in Europe, Canada and the grand daddy of them all, the Trans Siberian train from Moscow to Beijing via Harbin during Christmas. The food on the Canadian train was amazing, you should go on that one some day!!!
Glad you could make it out here to Utah, Tim. If only for a couple hours. I moved to Utah from the UK when I was 13, and you’re right about the difference in snow management. A light dusting of snow in England cancelled school for me. After moving to Utah, it could snow literally three feet, and I still had to go to school. It was a shock for sure.
So well presented Tim and enjoyable to watch.👍 Thank you. You are brave leaving belongs unattended. No lock ridiculous! The cleanness of the cabin is concerning the odour too! Think they fall short on in areas on customer service!
Whilst the room isn't the greatest, the actual trip with the amazing views makes it all worth while it seems. If I were to do it, I think i'd just nap in one of the seats in the observation carriage lol All the food looked good too. The price of the grilled cheese with a coffee is cheaper than a bottle of water i've had on LNER
When you sat down, with the coffee in hand and watched the scenery flow past you through those huge windows - it was then I decided what to do on my next vacation. The trouble is that the UK doesn't have such long train rides. I think the longest is the Xcountry from Penzance to Aberdeen which would be nice but they don't have sleepers!
I've always wanted to travel the country by rail, thinking it probably the ideal way to go. But Tim has shown me otherwise and now that I've reached my "advanced years," I'm not regretting not booking myself on a train. I wound be hugely claustrophobic on one of those! But it was very enjoyable watching Tim's adventure...and the food looked amazing!
unfotrunately looks like you definitely got one of the older sleeper cars on this trip. Amtrak has been slowly updating/replacing them with newer stock. I'm sure some rail enthusiasts would be able to give you tips on how/when to book so you got the newer ones if you ever wanted to do it again.
Galesburg is my nearest station to enjoy a day in Chicago. Nice time of year when it's all decked out for the holidays. Beautiful trip through the mountains. Good idea to take some cleaning wipes to make it more pleasant. I did a north/south trip from Chicago to Texas in a roomette and worked out well for me. Privacy and huge windows. Not great sleep but fun conversation with the neighboring cabins.
You should try a sleeper train in Japan. They have a much more consumer friendly train system there since so many people travel by train there. The sleeper buses are also pretty amazing.
The long waits on AMTRAK are because there are few tracks dedicated to passenger only trains, most tracks are for freight and those trains have priority. Hopefully we will eventually start to value high speed passenger trains, but they will never be as popular as they are in Europe, since the distances involved are simply so great. When high speed rail is finally finished in California it may start a trend.
Hiya Tim. I did a this journey too and back From New York back in 1995 when I was 24. I also did It steerage class so not even a sleeper. It was amazing. Incredible scenery especially the Rockies.
That was a great experience, Tim. :) The price was not bad for the three-day trip, considering some of the prices you have paid at hotels. Of course, they are all different experiences. It is a pleasant surprise that you had a working shower that did not freeze you to death. Also, it was a great surprise how nice the food was. Thanks for taking us along and for your hard work. You are appreciated.
Every time I hear someone bring up the fact Americans don't have passports. I tell them to take the Zephyr. The train perfectly encapsulates why the majority don't have one. You really don't need one.
What an ignorant take 🤣 you don't get Europe/Africa/Asia in the USA no matter how diverse the scenery is, travelling is about experiencing different cultures not just different vistas mate @@ReinSouls
@@jamestabbron8124 Travelling has a different meaning to everyone. So I regret to inform you that your take, which I actually agree with, isn't the only definition of travel. I do believe people should have a passport and explore the world we live on. With that said, a lot of people, especially Americans, want to visit different climates. Not cultures. And since the U.S is the way it is. They do not need a passport in order to experience that. So I could have worded my response better. Learning moment for both of us :).
@@ReinSouls I get what you mean by travel can mean just going to somewhere for the climate and the views and that's fine, but, when you say about Americans not needing passports as they have so much scenery in the USA that's where I disagree. My point is really that even though that kind of travel is good and is a part of travel, not ever leaving a country and experiencing other ways of life and cultures at least once is ignorant imo. In England we have plenty of people that just go to benidorm for the weather and because lots of other English people holiday there which is fine, but if that's the only holiday you ever do then I cant honestly call that travel. But I get what you're saying.
My aunt and I took the train from Orange County to LA to go shopping when I was a child. She didn’t drive. When we lived in the Denver area we took the train to Glenwood springs. I have always wanted to take an overnight trip but my husband has passed and my grandkids are in college. I don’t want to go alone just because it would be more fun to be with someone.
Wow. I never travel in a sleeper car. I did travel by Amtrak via work but was only on AmTrak for about a few hours. I never done ride a train before I did Amtrak. Interesting ride. Your video on this train ride is very interesting.
Have YOU ever tried a sleeper train?
Yeah went on a sleeper train from Paris to Nice a few years ago - not much sleep and a noisy train tbh.Wouldnt mind trying a sleeper again but would have to be pretty luxurious.Looking forward to seeing this video Tim

Japan knows how to do sleeper trains. They are impeccably cleaned, inside and out.
Abroad in Japan says there are only two sleeper trains left in Japan? One to Tottori and from sunrise forward they announce each stop so you can sleep past about 6 a.m.?
Everything in Japan is impeccably cleaned!
Considering your past experiences with sleeper trains, I have to give you credit for still giving them a shot and giving us honest reviews of them.

@irenedavo3768 Much better value than the Orient Express.
@oldjake4233 True, $9000 for a 24-hour experience is very expensive. Not to mention that Jeb and Suzanne booked the cheapest room 😳
I don't think Jeb thought it was value for money.

If you are ever in South Africa and want a real luxury experience, definitely book on Rovos Rail from Cape Town to Livingston , Zambia. The ultimate in luxury rail travel.
That looked amazing. The views and different weathers are just awesome. Makes the UK feel very small.
That video was just really relaxing to watch. Great video Tim
We must get Tim to 1 Million subs .. lets go everyone and keep up the great work Tim❤
You just get better and better Tim, great video!!! Thankyou ❤
Can’t wait for this amazing video🔥
Hope you enjoyed it!
You need to ride on the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer !! That's an amazing trip !!
Wow, you're in Emeryville! I used to work on the other side of the plaza. I'm a native to the Bay Area and haven't been or seen where you are in the beginning of this video in YEARS. Thanks for sharing.
Looks a little rough. Due for an upgrade. My wife always brings cleaning products with her.
Hi tim loved the video looks like an interesting experience to stay on a sleeper train the views with the snow look amazing
Looking forward to seeing this Tim 💙❄️
Love the way the train has windows everywhere so you can see everything.
Excellent episode! Thank you for sharing your experience.
I have never done a sleeper train. I would love to do this actual one. Thanks for showing it.
Great video Tim, was nice to see the different states you passed each day...🙌🏽
I've always wanted to travel the country by rail, thinking it probably the ideal way to go. But Tim has shown me otherwise and now that I've reached my "advanced years," I'm not regretting not booking myself on a train. I wound be hugely claustrophobic on one of those! But it was very enjoyable watching Tim's adventure...and the food looked amazing!
Frigging love this channel!!
What an epic journey! I definitely would have complained about the state of the cabin though.
Great content as always Tim!!
Definitely want to do this thanks for the ride. This is on my Bucket for years pity about the cleanliest
*cleanliness
Cleanliest isn't a word.
unfotrunately looks like you definitely got one of the older sleeper cars on this trip.
You didn't even get to stop at Portillos for the world's best hot dog while you were in Chicago. Love Chicago, my hometown.
Loved the sleeper train Tim, the snow was amazing, fab video game be of your best
Tim you make every video interesting. I love you sharing all your adventures especially in America also. Love to you. Gaby and casper.
Definitely a bucket list trip for me, good to know about the toilet issues, I might opt for a roomette now
God that cabin is so incredibly grubby, I can't believe you were able to put up with that
You should try a sleeper train in Japan. They have a much more consumer friendly train system there since so many people travel by train there. The sleeper buses are also pretty amazing.
As somebody who lives in the Midwest in America, you tend to get a lot of snow and I promise the more you are familiar with snow the more you hate it.
Definitely on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing your experience Tim!
Amtrak charges way too much for those rooms to be dirty like that. They should be ashamed!!!
Thank you for going in this train. Wondered how the ride would be -- interesting
The plus’s and pitfalls. Thank you for sharing. 👍
Such a megadiverse country! the scenery alone is worth the trip!
Definitely
Amazing scenery. Not sure I could sleep at night though with the motion of the train and the noise
I love it! You were here in Chicago! 🥳🥳🥳 I wish I couldve met you! I love your videos and your personality!
Loving your editing, you are really developing as youtuber. Hope to see your sub count continue to rise!
We love watching you, Tim. Always look forward to your videos. Appreciate it.
Wow. I never travel in a sleeper car. I did travel by Amtrak via work but was only on AmTrak for about a few hours. I never done ride a train before I did Amtrak. Interesting ride. Your video on this train ride is very interesting.
This is a bucket list train.
