In everything we do, we will aim to use our guiding principles, which are to: Inspire, Involve, Inform and Improve.
Sounds perhaps a bit silly but I use a nailclipper to make the chip, it also works with lupines
Brilliant idea. I sowed 12 double modules with and 12 without a small clipping of the shell taken. All but two of the modules I took the clipping have grown well in the first week or so. Of the 12 modules I didn't clip the seeds, only three have so far started growing
Yes I was wondering about pinching the tops too. My sweet peas have germinated OK but they are very tall and stringy with few and tiny leaves :(
Thank you. My first try sowing anything. I'm excited!!
Really helpful, especially the bit about the knife or emery board. Do you pinch the tops out to create bushier plants?
Yes pinch the tops to create fuller plants. Pinch when you see two to three true leaves
@@JzsaJzsa only for spring sown sweet peas though. you dont do it for autum sowings
Nothing about time of sowing ie autumn or spring
Sow in a cold frame in early autumn, early spring or in-situ in mid-spring. www.rhs.org.uk/plants/25520/lathyrus-odoratus/details
Thank you. I tried last year but didn’t get one seed to germinate. I tried again this year but I soaked the seeds first in warm water for just a few minutes, so far I have 7 little plants coming through. I might try cutting the next lot of seeds to see which works best in my conditions (I live 2,000 feet above sea level). 💐💐
I sprouted mine in two days in paper towel and a baggie on a heat mat. Ohio.
Ooh like it I will try both nick and Emery see if it ups my germination rate , thanks
Nice vlog. I will admit to having tried all the methods you suggest, and have had the most success with 'soaking'. We did this last week (7 days ago) and yet again they have all popped up. (Posted from the Nordics) I continue to value you advice and care. My thanks.
How long do you soak them for?
@@fakeempire6487 Overnight, or just for the afternoon etc. I find it doesn't need to be very long.
Horrifying to see a knife held towards your finger...
I love the sustainability angle. Toilet rolls no plastic abs peat free!
I need help please! I bought my mom some seeds for King Tut sweet peas and from what I gather they can be quite difficult to grow. We are in San Diego so that gives you an idea of our climate can anybody out there give me at least some tips or pointers? My mother has an awfully good green thumb but even she is kind of intimidated with what we've heard about the difficulty of these
Should I pinch my sweet pea seedlings?
First time sewing sweet peas, very excited to give it a go. Great video!
Thank you, glad i can stick it out early spring, got a barrel and pole in the middile, planning to wrap around that pole
Thank you; timely information.
When do I plant the sweet pea seeds in pot
Once the plants have grown to about 6” in height, it helps to pinch the growing tips by 1”, which will help the plants branch out and produce more flowering stems.
nothing about taking the top leaves off? nothing about watering requirements?
Do you pinch back?
For garden growing,
Removal of a plant’s growing tip (usually with finger and thumb) to encourage it to produce side-shoots, forming a bushier, well-shaped plant that will bear more flowers and/or fruits.
pinch out shoot tips of young spring-sown sweet peas when plants reach about 7.5-10cm (3-4in). This encourages strong side-branching. Autumn-sown
A seedling is a young plant grown from seed.
seedlings often branch naturally.
Finally a very good advise Video how to grow Sweetpeas properly! I do love them since I saw plenty of them in many gardens we visited in England some years ago.
But, how long can seeds of sweetpeas being stored under which condition? I mean, how long are they able to germinate?
Thank you so much and I do hope to visit the Chelsea Flower Show in September! Keep well and healthy !
Lots of Love from UWE, Germany
I sowed my sweet peas 7 days ago and no signs of anything.
Super clearand concise🤩 thank you
Very knowledgeable video. When is the best time to do this Thankyou for your help ☺️
It depends on your zone that you live in. I started mine in the first week of March on my window sill
Very helpful! How often should I water my sweet peas?
Keep them moist but not wet
I don't understand why you would use a good, fluffy compost and then press the air out of it.
Seeds and plants need to feel secure ,
@@gailpeters4173 soil's job is to hold water AND air. Without air the roots can't breathe. It isn't about the plant feeling secure, it is about the roots being able to breathe.
When you water fluffy compost the air will leave anyway and you'll be left with your soil level going right down.. It's good to lightly push the soil down, not heavily and compact it. Just to remove some of the air voids
I come from a commercial greenhouse background. I've been involved with planting hundreds of thousands of plants, into truckloads of soil. We never pressed the soil down, because we paid good money for the airspace in that soil. Air voids were never a problem.
@davidquarles5965 why are you watching this for advice then?
