- Here's some of the carnage from destroying our MK7 Golf R engine on the dyno. We made over 550whp on stock engine but ran into problems and it let go. It will be back in some shape or form.
Huge thanks goes out to the following for the support on this.

What should we do with it?
Please please Slot the 18HoopT engine in there will be a lot of work
But It deserves another run out
3.6 would be my vote, but I know Dave doesn't like those 2 extra cylinders.
Rs3 motor swap, turn it into the golf R VW should have made by now
@@JP-zy2fi The 18hoopt died if you don't remember.
@@dubCanuck1 Not that I don't like them.... but if you could see the comparison between the dyno graph of these 7R's with big turbo around 4-500whp compared to a boosted VR at the same power level you'd shake your head as it just doesn't make sense. The 4cyl wins in every category, aside from sound of course. :) With that said we talked about VR, but I'd need to track down an AWD VR bell housing to make it work.
I have a bottom end from a 2015 S3 you can have for free. Pistons, rods, crank all intact and cylinder walls are perfect. 55k miles on it. Issue is it is located in MD and I won't be able to ship it since I'm out of town for a while.
Appreciate that, it'd be worth me checking on freight.
Is it still up for grabs 🫣
I’m in gb Maryland if it’s still available lol hurt my 10k mile bottom end
It be sweet to see that setup with internals to see 600+ but either way I'm here to see awesome content.
such a good channel with a plethora of content for 1.8 and 2 litre TFSI, well done.
Appreciate it
16:48 - Wait for the heroic edit...cheers for that!
Now that's what I'd call a 'ventilated block!' Hole in the front and back for the ultimate 'cross breeze!' LOL WOW!!! What a freakin mess! Have to re-order speedy dry and brake clean after that one!
I had a 1.8t throw a rod and it drove up the hill and idled…it was only 20lbs but got to love the 1.8t
Not sure if it’s possible but a vr5 swap would definitely bring in a lot of attention and will be fun to watch. Great video as always and goodluck with the R😁
We did not get that engine here in North America.
Vr6 3.2 swap?
@@FastLifeVlog Eww, Lol.
Very cool seeing the diagnostic side, trying to find the point at which it all went to hell.
makes me respect the AWP 1.8t even more. More mileage and stress on yet held up. I think the pulls with the flaps not allowing full air may have put some stress during those pulls but just a theory.
Log looked great. it just let go. RIP ashtray.
While this totally sucks for that poor R, I found it fascinating to see inside your dyno. Brakekleen smells so good lol
I blew up my mk7 gti exactly like that. front and back of the block, pieces of piston and block everywhere. I was only stage two stock turbo at about 300 hp, but this makes sense for a 550 whp stock engine.
Interesting, what was the cause?
@@COMotorsports Not entirely sure. Access port read 18 degrees of knock retard average, but that could be after it blew up.
That'll buff out! Nice moon roof!
Time for a RS3 5cyl swap🔥
Appreciate the datalog would be cool with you share the datalog with every dyno session
I just finished getting a new engine in my 17 Golf R. It costs about 12k CAN for a complete motor. I know there was 2 in Canada.
thats some mega carnage.
Would love to know if it was piston failure..... would love to see a mk7 r32/r36 turbo in it.... great content as usual, stressed out, due to doing a stage 2 on my son's car....
No stress I do them every other day.
Any video footage of when it happened?
On today’s episode of when inners become outers
That boosted 07k lurking at the end 👀
I really appreciate the time and effort. I'm sorry it went down like this. It also sucks there was no video of the carnage. Was there any damage outside of the engine? Like the turbo? How difficult would a 1.8t swap be or an Audi swap? Could be dumb questions but what are the engine options realistically?
Turbo is 100%. So really lucked in there. We could swap any engine really as we'd just run the engine on standalone. We've talked about 1.8t but we'll see. Drag car first.
@@COMotorsports can't wait for the drag car! Love it!
Is there video of the destruction event?
I would have liked to see or hear how the engine disassembled. This has already happened to me too. The connecting rod extended the knee out of the block. Unfortunately, the EA888 have a tendency to tip the pistons or have holes burned into the pistons.
Hasn't come apart yet.
Sorry about the engine taking a big ol 💩. What a spanner in the works but all the best with the next steps.
Appreciate it
Cylinder 3 channeled it's inner spongebob meme. "aight imma head out"
I've always thought it would be easier to diag failure when the vehicle does you a favor and puts the part numbers on the outside for you! Boys this is some impressive friggin failure holy frig! LS swap the R?
No LS going in this one. lol
Ah yes, the old inside parts become outside parts style of mechanical diagnostics.
Is swap? Sounds lame as fuck
3.2 swap ecu??
What would you say is the best way to prevent this happening? Or is it really just down to luck?
Regular oil changes helps the life?
I can't say 100% why it happened. Although I was getting greedy with boost I think this was a result of the sensor and the hard cuts it experience at higher rpm. Then although the issue was resolved the engine was already hurt (bent rods) and then it was just a matter of time.
wow That's crazy. EA888 blew up and your rod fly to Moon already! that is champion! and I think you need order IE Rod stronger and piston stronger too .
There's no block to put them in unfortunately.
Hey what about a 5 cylinder Audi turbo engine swap
Or more budget friendly 3.2 turbo
I'd love to see a 2.5 tfsi 6mt swap out of a 8J TTRS, if you can find one!
Out of all the engines you've built what engine do you feel is most reliable?
Built they all can be the same, it just comes down to the parts going into them and what power we're trying to achieve.
If you're talking stock... the 2L 8v. They live for ever with little maintenance, also make no power. lol
Kinda off topic but does anyone know if there is anyway to use a awd mk1 Audi transmission in mk4 1.8t for a 6speed conversion from a 02j?
Yes, but that's the least of your worries if you're trying to AWD amk4.
I just want it for it being a 6spd and still run fwd for now
I already know that dyno roller gonna be a pain in the butt to clean.. Ask me how I know lol
How was the spool vs the vortex xl u just did
As mentioned in the video. Wet didn't try and soil this one hard to keep it "safer". But I would suspect it would be lazier. However the XL tops out at 550whp.
Do you think you are going to build your spare mk7 r motor so it doesn’t do the same thing
2012 golf GTI with DSG, the shop in Florida went cobb. They now say it cannot be mapped properly is this true? Thanks
I don't know what you're asking?
@@COMotorsports do you use cobb, if so are all cars custom tuned on the dyno or do you use settings supplied to you?
@@floridalife-livinginflorid6882 we are a Cobb pro tuner, but we simply offer what's available as it's not worth it for us for the small amount we'd do.
Giving my amateur opinion I’d say it was piston damage more so solely because half the rod held on for its life and never left.
This is a sad day. Let us have a moment of silence. 😢
My 93 eurovan had a thrown rod when I bought it and it started/ran and drove;
The piston top was all the way at the top of the bore and the rod was obliterated
1.8T still the 👑 of HP.
FMIC for sale?
Time to do a 3.6 swap in it
So 500 hp wheel is the limit on stock engine ?
No, plenty have made 550whp. We just had a series of unfortunate events take place. lol
Maybe the rod(s) bent when you were pushing 550 and then it was a ticking time bomb... 🤔
"was" is the key to that statement.
Haha, did you guys use the "recycle engine" map ?
That's a good name for it. "Save As".
The engine was leaning out in the logs at row nr 105 and 106. Couldnt this be an issue, or is it just a consequence of "something went wrong inside" ?
.83 isn't lean for this thing honestly... however that was after it let go. It was 100% on the rich side right up until it let go at 6k. Plus a lean issue would have torched the piston not grenade the rod/piston.
@@COMotorsports Yes I know .83 is not lean but before it occured engine was running on .80.. Immediately it went to .83 with a lot of timing pull. So huge detonations occured with slowly leaning out.. Maybe fuel pump failed? I don't know but it was just bad luck in my opinion.. Nevermind your channel has great content.
@@1987snuff on this run I'm confident this was not a fuel issue. All is in check, also you have to keep in mind the resolution of the data isn't great with these logs as it jumps in increments of 100rpm. I think the previous runs with the sensor issue caused the issue... and although the problem was resolve the damage was done and it let go. Appreciate the comments and thoughts. 👍
That's one way to lubricate the floor!
All my charges and stuff all still leak oil.
Ok ok... Use the drive train for your mk1, then bolt an 07K on that bad boy and boost to the moon!
Obviously the RS3 2.5 conversion !!
Isn't it that you can only safely push the EA888 engine to 450hp and to push more, you have to upgrade to forged rods and pistons? Sucks to see the engine blow.
Nope, look at other videos on our channel.
Thrust bearing failure?
Connecting rod failure.
It would be cool to hear the explosion real time in a short maybe! 🤙🏼
In real time, do you have a time machine?
@@COMotorsports ha I wish I had one, but no I just figured you guys were recording it when it let go.
How much boost was too much?
It broke at less boost. I think the sensor fault is what initially bent the rod. Then it was a matter of time.
Lmao, I’ve never checked my spark plugs from the bottom of engine.
First time for us also
Yeah after the vr6 and 1.8t’s reliability has gone down hill .
No footage of the actual blow up huh?
I was filming 1 or 2 runs prior to this, but was like why am I filming when I'm just turning it down.... and here we are.
Please please slot the 18HoopT engine in there it will be a lot of work
But it deserves another run out
3.6 turbo 4motion would be different 😊
I can smell that from here.
3.0 v6 TFSI or TFSI swap not sure if y’all fuck with diesels but TDI would be dope
We like making power. Lol
Ouch...... I don't know what else to say. Just ouch
GREAT, NO KNOCKING AT ALL - that's a relief. So lesson learned: these engines can't take more than 500 hp at 7000 rpm?
They can, we're had contributing factors to this ones failure.
Rip ea888 :c
Put the hooptie engine in it🤣...600 and still ticking after all that licking!!
I know I’m late to the party but I’d love to see an 07K swap!
Ones scheduled for my daily, I have all parts, turbo gear everything. However time is the issue, especially now with the new drag car chassis.
Well I was wrong I thought it might have been the chain that had stretched and jumped the timing
Honesty that would have never done this much damage typically.
Damn, This would literally break my bank account if this happened to my R.
I got the entire car for a VERY good price.
Why not put a gen 2 RS3 motor in, if available that would be a 1st for the channel.
You paying? 25k for an engine doesn't make much sense.
When sending it sends it
1.8t swap it and keep the haldex make awd call it the hooopTR lol
god damn
Weird, it’s notorious for being strong
I mean 550 Hp out of a 2l engine is not really surprising for it to blow up. 400 Seems to be the limit without needing forged internals.
2.5L TURBO??
It's coming.
Vr6 swap it please!!
vr6t swap or 5 pot
Poor TSI Fartcan . Anyway its looks like salvage deployed scrap.
07K swap?
The 1.8t done better ☝️
This was the engine that had 271,000 km on it, right?
Correct. However mileage wasn't it's demise.
If I order a hat can you put a piece of piston or rod in with the order ?
No problem
Good marketing idea right there
My Golf 7 R from HGP blew the engine after 8 hours of buying it. That sucks ass
My two cents. Those motors just can't do 500 plus hp. Put an rs3 motor in it or 3.6 vr6 stroked and punched out to 4.2 with a turbo....1000hp on pump gas all day long.
*Insert blinking meme*
RS3 swap🙌🏻
I wouldn't waste that kind of money when a built 07K will do the job.
✌🏼
1.8t!
I blame the rod bolts
The rod bolts were all in tacked and as they should be. This 100% had nothing to do with food bolts.
are you going to take the engine apart?
At some point maybe once we figure out what we're doing next with it.
@@COMotorsports it already did that. It speedran the process
@@ZJSProMedia pretty much.
Hear me out put in a VR swap or put the stock motor in it and make it the fastest stock engine car possible
what a god damn mess lol this will forever be known as the TSI pinata
Except with crappy prizes. Lol
Mannnnn. So sad.
I do not think these engines stock can handle this type of power maybe 400 to the wheels not anymore.
You can see we just made 52x on a customer car not very long ago. They're definitely capable, we just had outlying issues.
Yard Sale!!!!!!
What Desaster, engine in germany now ca. 3000 Euro
It's an open deck design
Open block you mean.
Open block you mean.
Pun 1.9tdi ALH :)
3.6 vr6 out of a Passat is cheaper and sound cool
so, for want of a new O2sensor and an oil change and maybe not so much boost on a 160K mile engine, 1 less engine and tons of cleanup.... seems you got what you asked for.
Point?
Swap the 3.6 vr6 from r36
