Jake Shimabukuro - "Bohemian Rhapsody" - TED (2010) - ukelele cover

- Jake Shimabukuro strums monster sounds out of the tiny Hawaiian ukelele, as he plays a cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." A sensational performance from TED2010 -- it'll send shivers down your spine.
The completely still and silent audience speaks volumes
That's because this is a TED event and not AGT
only because the audio source was from the ukelele pick up not an external mic.
And... at a TED TALK , no less
its called respect, this isnt a high school show or music concert lmao
every ukulele player who watches this be like: I want the tabs XD
if you search on google you will find them. i have
TheJuliMf I know, I found them on ultimate guitar
omg....yes
Exactly XD
***** I already have it but thanks!
Who ever plays ukulele knows this guys is a damn legend
You're right, we do. I respect him with all of my being.
May I introduce you to another Legend.... Feng E.
@@tjracing3243Enter Evan J De Silva, another fantastic player who also did a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. Today I felt like watching the both of them.
Why doesn’t my ukulele do that.
Our ukelele's are faulty.

+MrBannnnnny are you serious?? OMG
yes he explained that his name means island plastic bag
+MrBannnnnny yes, if write in 'Kanji", his name will be ‘岛袋杰克’,‘岛袋’ means ‘island bag’,lol
+MrBannnnnny Did he play the ukelele back then?
lucky
I can hear Freddie singing along in my head.
I love how the audience laughs like its a joke because its a uke but theyre actually blown away
Exactly.
My thoughts exactly 💯
Actually, I have to disagree. I "DON'T" love how they laughed when he named the song. By then end they should have bowed down chanting "sorry we doubted you".
“If the whole world played the ukulele, the world would be a happier place” EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS ❤️❤️❤️
Zackrie!! Mine, too!
Big lie.
@@christianaguilar4250 Someone has a big poop in his pants 🤭
I would say any instrument quite frankly.

lol yeah and he was moving his head

This feels like a nintendo version of Queen
Like a game that is just having a relaxing moment in the story
Marcelo Gallo ded 😂
This reminds me of when a third party game like Doom is ported to the Nintendo Switch... Bohemian Rhapsody is a very complicated song like Doom is very graphic heavy and they are both played on limited "hardwares".... if you know what I mean!!
8 bit happiness 😁
I close ma eyes, then i realize it like nintendo version haha
I think i'm using my ukulele wrong.
Ur profile pic scares me :(

Oh my God. I didn't believe it was possible to nail that song on ukelele. Wow. Just...wow.
Ryma Racabre hi beauts
Come here often?
Same but I was curious because I have a ukulele now and I wanted to learn it if it was possible and it is :o

На четырёх струнах, а как целый мини оркестр..... Браво !!!! МАСТЕР ......👍👍👍👍👍
I love his face expressions and movements as he plays. He adds perfection to it. Nobody could play this better.
Duane & Heidi Phillips , have you ever watched any of Feng E’s videos? He gets so in to it, that he almost looks posessed
The only man worthy of a fedora
what about Patrick Stump

Aaactually, that's a trilby. They have a thinner rim.
um excuse me perry the platypus is disappointed in you
Well done. It is nice to know that I'm not the only one who wishes more people could tell the difference between a trilby and a fedora.
Note to all: If you're not sure what a fedora looks like... google "Indiana Jones".
This kid is wearing a trilby. And correctly so. The brim of the hat should match the wearer's build. A fedora would look ridiculous on him.
I've never seen a ukulele played with so much *LOVe* before
Have u seen obäver the rainbow?
Look up Taimane
Guys, this is his 1st ever video he has seen played like that
The purest rendition of what Freddy was trying to write and convey. That was magic!
The most beautiful version of that song that I've EVER heard! Great job!
Freaking awesome - to make that much music on a 4-stringed instrument is amazing. There's some spiritually uplifting about one person, with an acoustic instrument, making beautiful music.
Guy Merritt This instrument is the sexiest instrument on the planet and thanks to THIS amazing lessons I learned to play it in less than a month!
Have a look at ==> ukulele-master.blogspot.com/
Guy Merritt just four strings yano,,, awsome
Guy Merritt it doesn't matter how many strings an instrument has , it's in the players hands, look at diddly bow videos ,that only has one string and it's capable of creating great music in the right hands.
Bohemian Rhapsody. One of the musical masterpieces of our time.
I've of course always loved Bohemian Rhapsody, but hearing this version, stripped of the operatic hard rock of the Queen version, I am really moved by what a beautiful piece of music composition it is -- almost has a 1920's feel to it.
Masterpiece of all time
Oh, the amazing versatility of that instrument.
*WOW!!!!!!* WHAT A wonderful and UNUSUAL *SOLO* performance! *GLAD* HE GOT A *standing ovation!!* AND what A *VERY PROFESSIONAL ENTERTAINER!!*
He's such an enthusiastic player. If you've ever the opportunity to see him play live yourself, I highly recommend it.
Leeman Harrington i get to see him live today!!
Yes booked his concert in Chicago
There's nothing more satisfying than watching a truly talented musician become one with their instrument. Every great musician has that exact same look on their face when they get "in the zone." It's like their mind has gone completely blank and they're just letting the music flow through their body. So amazing to watch :)
Wow
Apparently when i get in "the zone" i look like I'm going to murder someone. Very interesting to see when playing the flute I've heard
Agree, but it's not just music. Watching any virtuoso in flow state always fascinates me.
I feel like the 7 mins I watched him play everything was still. As if it was only me listening to talent in its finest form. Never have I been in such awe of someone playing ukulele. I play and I have always wanted to learn this. This is beautiful... just beautiful
It took several years, a combination of several unrelated tunes divided and connected into 7 distinct parts using (3) 24-track analog tape recorders for Freddie Mercury to assemble and Queen to record this song. Playing this on a ukulele live is like doing brain surgery with a butter knife. Quite astounding.
That's the best imagery I've ever read to describe an insane cover
Doing brain surgery with a butter knife? Don't make me laugh it's definitely not that difficult.
That being said, this is a heavenly damn good performance. You're just an idiot that can't find a good comparison.
@@REDEEMERWOLF I was praising the ukulele cover. The next time you have brain surgery, make sure they use a scalpel.
@@tomf429 I like how they decide to call you stupid on a comment from two years ago lol
They probably can’t play an instrument cuz oh yeah it isn’t THAT impressive 😤
@@alisonmcalistair I started playing my father’s ukulele at age 11. It led me, soon after, to playing guitar. I picked up the 5-String banjo along the way. I am 70 now and still play guitar everyday, and pick up my ukulele once in awhile. I meant the comment as a compliment to the player.
Those harmonics are hard on little nylon strings! Well done!
+Warren NZ which armonics? those are hammer-on.
+Arnold Roa He does some easy 12th fret harmonics at 4:47 but after checking I was wrong about the ones I thought I heard at 4:17. Those are just close notes not harmonics.
A great job anyway, I think I'll learn this one.
+Arnold Roa they are harmonics
+Warren NZ I think the harmonics he, talking about are at 1:53 where the piano begins in the original
Chris Guzman Yeah those are called "artificial harmonics" where the string isn't open so you have to touch the halfway point with one finger and pluck it with another.
Tricky, especially on nylon strings.
HOLY MOLY
I CAN'T BELIEVE I RANDOMLY FOUND YOU.

If Ukulele were a video game, Jake Shimabukuro would be the final boss. The man is beyond amazing.
It really takes care of the song in a most peculiar way...and it nails it.
Freddie and the band would have been proud.
I cannot believe anybody would give this a thumbs down.
That was awesome!
cocaine's a hell of a drug
It's probably for the Rolex ad at the end
I like that he promotes the Ukulele, but I think that the world wouldn't be better if everyone play the uke. Because then it wouldn't be special. I think that the world would be better if everyone played an instrument, or just sung. Music is what makes peace
All i have to do is whip out my uke on the battle field and all the war will stop
Did somebody said Uke???
I play the trombone 😵😂
Jake is amazing
He is amazing. Love that he loves his ukulele. Admire people who have a genuine passion for something.

Canadian Totoro Pretty amazing for a night off. Thoroughly enjoyed the talent. Wow
Ukulele is softer than guitar or bass
George Harrison would agree with the statement in quotes. :)
But the pain worths everything
I wish I could say that I saw this video 12 years ago and that I play the Ukulele today because of Jake Shimabukuro. The truth is I wanted to learn the guitar and started learning it this past June. I then discovered the massive Ukulele community right here on UA-cam and discovered how much easier and more fun it is to learn to play prior to learning the guitar. I can say with total confidence that it is because of Jake Shimabukuro and videos like this one that he made that inspired all the ukulele teachers I now study with online and I am very grateful for Jake Shimabukuro for being the incredible talent he is and for promoting the Ukulele to mainstream status and elevating its image so that I could proudly play the baritone Uke today.
This shows what years of dedication can do....Definitely one of the masters of the ukulele...
Freddie Mercury would have been soo proud of this.....this is one real difficult instrument, and even more difficult composition to play.....thanks a ton Jake Shimabukuro for your extreme talent
this actually sent shivers down my spine

By far the #1 greatest ukulele player in the world. A legend who even puts a lot of guitar heroes to shame
The right musician can make true to Play this Song in a Ukulele. Beautyful.❤
Harmonics, arpeggios, percussive elements, chordal support under the melody. All beautiful and incredibly executed.

One of the best covers of this beautiful masterpiece. It gave quite a different feeling compared to what we’ve heard or are hearing in the original. I think Mr. Mercury would be proud of this performance. Well done! 🙏
He is playing a song with an unlimited range with a limited range instrument. We must give credit to his mastermind in arranging this masterpiece.
Years ago, I saw him perform in Chattanooga Tennessee at a free concert. He did the Star Spangled Banner.. Everyone got quiet and most stood up for the performance. He was soooo humble and it was soooo good.
Sounds great!
You're always supposed to stand up for our National Anthem, even if Rosanne Barr sings it.
It is not that easy that you can play it with your eyes closed Jake! You genius!
u mean cuz hes asian? wtf lul

or you just want to be sarcastically racist?
JackQueenandKing no stfu ok, ive had it with this racist negativity shit all over the internet fuck u and all ur nazi friends. bye bye im out of here nerds
***** Hey mate! calm down! I just think that people should not judge people by their races. there are bunch of other talented players that I believe have played with their eyes closed, He is asian have nothing to do with his talents. When you post a comment, don't just assume that people won't judge you. Your comment sounds a bit negative to me, and I just can't tolerate it anymore (seen so much cause he is asian stuff). btw, I am also asian. Maybe you think it's just a joke or something. But please respect him and his talents, what he can do have nothing to do about his race, but only his passion and hardworking.
Halo. There is a moment when he did really close his eyes and play. I have no intentions of being racist.
Jake is to the Uke as Bela Fleck is to the banjo, Victor wooten is to the bass , Bob Culbertson is to the stick, Edgar Meyer is to the upright bass, Steve Morse is to the guitar, etc, etc, etc. So many freakishly talented people .
"Do whatever you want with my music, just don't make it boring."
That quote is boring

I’m tired of seeing this quote tbh
@@mcblaze2985 what are you gonna do about it? genuine question

+graKe is there a proper tutorial out there?
You'll Get it man it took me like 4 months and i got it perfect now.
If you haven't bought one yet, I would like to recommend one for you. I bought my wife a Peavey Composer AU about 4 months ago, and was so impressed with it that I bought one for myself as well. Two of our friends also fell in love with ours, and bought one for themselves. We got hers in a music store, and I ordered mine online, as did my friends. They only cost $75.00 and shipping was free. For the price, I was surprised that it is a real instrument, not a toy.

It's better on guitar. Not biased cuz I have a uke AND a guitar
im dazzled by the composition more than the playing. how in the actual fuck did this piece of music come about? freddy was truly inspired.
This arrangement still gives me butterflies, absolute mastery
Ukeleles are like a mash up of a guitar and a harp.Whoever invented them, must have been a wonderful person
5:26 this is the most peaceful sound i've ever heard
5:00 - Pure magic, poetry
Absolutely phenomenal!
Way to channel so much love and energy through that instrument. It is an under dog but once you know your scales and chords you can bring anything to life. You just have to learn the instrument. You're one amazing ukelele player man.
Wow. Never thought a ukelele would be bringing me close to tears today. One gets the feeling this guy could coax beautiful sounds out of a spoon and two marshmallows. What a reminder that TED isn't all about talk. I'm about to go buy a ukelele for my wife. Here's hoping, if we talk real nice to it, it will give us even an approximation of that level of musicianship.
A well deserved standing ovation. Truely a master of his instrument.
