Sony’s naming scheme is perfect, you got such catchy products as the WH-XB910N! Everyone loves and knows that exact product and where it sits in Sony’s product line.
I love how comfortable you are on the solder/re-wire. I did a GBA backlight swap a while ago. Happy to say it works perfectly, but I took my sweet time and watched many hrs of video to get brave enough.
We all been that at some point. Most important thing is you took the initiative to do it and accomplished what you want to do at the end. Doing a lot of DIY projects, I did have my patience tested. The pros made it look so easy. A lot of times though, the end result is worth it and you feel that sense of accomplishment.
You should reverse the left and right dpad wiring on a spare SNES controller and then play a bunch of games in the LCD's mirror mode. It's like getting a new set of SMB stages in reverse!
3:18 I have no idea how you did it, but you’ve turned the silver accents on the PS3 see-through I’ve always wanted Mario to stare at me through my PS3 while I’m playing Minecraft
That image used to have a white background, so to get rid of it there are tool that target one specific color to get rid of, the silver was so shiny that the tool James used thought it was white
3:21 Here in Europe, we used Scart connectors for basically everything we hooked into our TVs since sometime in the 80s. I know it was capable of a better image than composite, but I'm not sure if the European SNES (or other consoles at the time) was actually capable of outputting something better than composite? At that time, I had a Commodore Amiga instead. I do remember when I got the original PlayStation right after launch, it just came with a composite cable with a Scart dongle attached to it as standard. I quickly bought the proper official Sony Scart cable to replace it, which was a huge upgrade in image quality.
SNES RGB output is really blurry (it looks like the image has streaked horizontally is the best way I can put it) unless you have a later 1-chip revision model or perform a mod. Otherwise, you're probably better off using S-Video honestly - yes, there's a bit of colour bleed and artifacting but not so much of the blur. I think the Saturn (at least at first) was the first console to come with an RGB SCART cable as standard in some European markets, if you don't count France where I think it was a legal requirement that any device that connected to a TV had to have RGB-compliant output available.
My DVD player still uses scart and looks surprisingly decent for such a chunky connector, although I’m terrified of damaging the pins every time I plug it in.
That would mess with my head. I already have the memory of a goldfish and worse when I'm playing platformers lol. 100 lives is _definitely_ not enough for me.
The creator of this screen should've made the part where it fits on the console an adjustable/retractable/universal doodad so you can fit it on different kinds of consoles. Or make it so you can easily swap out the bottom part with your own 3D printed one. Still really cool though. Thanks for the vid James! Merry Christmas!
Looking up the designer, it looks like the guy does other retro stuff with Sega Saturn. I can't understand Chinese but he has a couple videos on BiliBili
10:05 You've just unlocked some memories for me. I remember having the ps one with the portable screen. I even had a cigarette lighter adapter for the car so I could play while on roadtrips. I remember some games not working on it tho, dunno if it was the pirated games or what but I used to have some of those too since in eastern europe 20 years ago it was easier to get those then the actual legit games xD
1:21 Phillips is a "universal" screw head (can be turned by Phillips or flathead screwdrivers), while flathead is in the same respect a "universal" screwdriver -- this doesn't seem odd or out of place to me! This way, in case they mess up (or run out) and include the wrong type of screws/driver, they don't have to swap out the other component as well
As a mechanic I could not disagree more, using the wrong tools damages the tool and the fastener. Even the wrong sized phillips driver for a phillips screw gets a frown from me. There are screws designed to accept both but these are not them.
@Games_for_James in an ideal world, I don't disagree with you -- just trying to look at it from the manufacturer's (and average consumer's) perspective, it wasn't my intent to defend or condone the practice
Between the constant chainsaw noises, the kookaburras, the arcade machine sounds, and the distant rattle of a 1.6L TDi, I think James has one of the noisiest shops around.
It's products like this that makes me love Aliexpress. Where else are you gonna find handmade electronics? As in, just from some guy's house instead of a factory line. These are super neat.
In my experience, all consoles that aren't the slim versions up to the PS3 support s-video. It is my preferred way to connect old hardware since it's a small, single cable. I don't like the massive SCART connector and YPbPr is just a mess of connectors everywhere. On a good CRT or through a nice scaler like a RetroTINK 5x or 4K s-video looks really really good. I feel like going from s-video to SCART or YPbPr does look nicer but it isn't worth the effort and expense. Anyways, love your videos! Just wanted to gush about s-video lol
I think the reason the screen doesn't close flat to the console and instead hovers when closed is so there's still room under it for the cartridge if you've left one in.
The inside is nearly identical to the Saroo Saturn screens, which unfortunately I found out also uses S-video to HDMI and it looks less than stellar. I would pay big money for a 4:3 LCD that is in the 8-12 inch range and accepts 15khz RGB, like a psone screen but bigger...
I think the hole under the screen is to store your game cart when folded up. The screw holes lead me to believe it's designed to mount a card connector there so the game locks in place.
@@Games_for_James Oh it’s too small? I was going to comment that I thought the slot was there for people playing with an import adapter where you could plug a cartridge on the back to bypass the region lock. But if carts don’t fit then there’s that theory out the window! 😅 I guess they just did it to save on 3D print material.
that's kinda cool if you don't have much space or even a screen for old signals. what irks me though is the bilinear filtering that i think I'm seeing. i personally despise that.
The frame tearing issue might be due to the SNES’s output being under 60hz (59.94hz). This isn’t a mark against the screen. Fixing this requires a video professor that can do triple buffering to deliver the monitor’s expected frame rate.
The monitor having built in image flipping tells me that this kind of firmware is designed for projectors. I have a cheap projector with very different software but still some similar quirks, such as a forced 60.00hz refresh rate for all inputs and tearing when you make the zoom smaller.
The nintendo playstation? I got all the buttons working when I built it, even the eject button can be held down to make the system think the disc cover is open

The best thing is that this is also a N64 and GameCube LCD, since they all share the same connector. Not sure about them fitting in the groove, though
