    I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

    Molly, just FYI: when you travel through U.S. airports, your mom (or a friend) actually can go through security with you. Just ask for an escort pass. My mom always takes me through security and to my gate, then stays there with me until my plane leaves. People always think that I'm a minor when they see that, haha (I'm 35). They don't realize that people with disabilities can also get passes for family and friends to go through security with them. I know you filmed this video at Toronto airport, but I just wanted to let you know about that policy in U.S. airports in case you didn't know. Anyway, this video was so helpful to me! I travel by myself all the time, and I tell people that it's one of the few things about being visually impaired that always causes me significant stress. I don't get stressed over any other vision-related obstacle as I do over traveling. I feel better knowing I'm not alone!

      It depends on the airport. In Atlanta they won’t let you unless there’s an actual need (such as Molly’s case). Even then, they’re really strict now. My aunt visited from Europe in May and doesn’t speak English and they wouldn’t let my mom through with her to help.

    • @daniellemaddie1921
      @daniellemaddie1921 5 років тому +22

      Maja Culum oh sucks that must have been hard for her. I’ll probably take advantage of my no vision in one eye and low in the other to get special needs help just in case something were to go wrong.

    • @Mothman_In_a_T-Pose
      @Mothman_In_a_T-Pose 5 років тому +18

      I've done this, too. I have a tendency to get overwhelmed and shut down when stressed, so having my mom there for the most stressful part of travelling (checking bags, getting through security, finding the right terminal, making sure the plane isn't delayed) really helps.
      I've been given some pushback, but my mildly terrified face and my mom explaining about my NVLD usually solves it.

    • @daniellemaddie1921
      @daniellemaddie1921 5 років тому +8

      Alma Saon I 100% agree with you. I have pretty good vision with my glasses which I was able to pass my driving exam with but I just don’t trust myself with making sure I’m going the right way, or making the right decision alone. I guess I feel more comfortable with letting someone else make decisions in an airport vs myself making them if that makes sense haha. I also have bad travel anxiety even when I’m with someone and being alone would probably be even worse.

    I’ve been through a cancer diagnosis and law school and I can hands down say that traveling alone as a blind person who relies on a guide dog, is the absolute most stressful and exhausting process because of other people. When check-in counter employees, TSA agents, gate agents, flight crews, and other people are patient and understanding it makes all of the difference in the world. So this video made me anxious for Molly and made me cry. It brought back some awful memories. No one ever wants to feel like an inconvenience or a burden. No one wants to BE an inconvenience or a burden.
    I’ve only had one issue with another passenger on a plane. I was already seated with my dog well within my foot space and a lady who boarded right as they were closing the aircraft door realized that she’d be sitting next to us. She refused to take her seat and tried demanding that I be moved because she didn’t want to get dog hair on her pants. I was seated at a window seat at the bulkhead in first class. To move me would have involved getting my dog up and across the isle and resettled while upending the final cabin prep. The flight crew told her it wasn’t possible and offered her that seat or a switch of seats. She continued to make a scene and make me feel awful. A man seated behind us and someone else across the isle at the bulkhead offered her his seat and she refused. At this point I was stressed and in tears. The flight crew gave her the option to deplane and take a later flight. She stomped off the plane (that was now leaving late) to the sounds of booing from the other passengers.
    So I felt her frustration here.

    I really think the airline and airport personnel could make the effort to tell you that there is a delay. That is so unkind to leave you alone, without information or help. My favorite airline has an app that emails me when there is a flight information change. I am glad the cafe was kind enough to feed you. What a nightmare!

    • @louiseglasgow
      @louiseglasgow 5 років тому +24

      Z B That’s such a good point, an app for an airline I use updates you on the departure time and recently even shows the location of your plane on a map. And it does this even before you arrive at the airport. I don’t know if it’s accessible to voiceover but if it is that wouldn’t replace their responsibility to check on assistance passengers but I know I find it great and I imagine blind passengers would appreciate it even more. Also, could the airport not have an app or a phone number assistance passengers could call throughout the process to ask if they need assistance to find a toilet or food etc while waiting or if they’re concerned they have been forgotten when there is a gate change. If each assistance passenger was given that number on arrival and/or a real-time webchat type option, that could help all round! If passengers agreed they could even give permission for the location of their phone to be tracked through the airport (like WhatsApp location) so that someone could monitor where assistance passengers are and make sure they haven’t been forgotten by on the ground staff!

      MyKindOfCrazy I have not seen any sign of it being accessible to folks with visual impairments, but the data could be entered before the flight by Molly’s assistant or whoever books the flight. The notifications come as texts and /or emails, which the text to speech app would read aloud. In my experience Delta also is very good about accommodating disabilities and medical issues. They messed up on my allergy request, which netted me 40 thousand extra air milestones an apology!

I have an invisible disability too and I’ve also had the same issue that whenever I’ve requested assistance, I either don’t get the help (because they’re looking for someone in a wheelchair probably) or I do get help but I quickly get passed onto someone else, which is not ideal for me because I have autism and lots of different people increases my anxiety. It makes me so angry you should have to be in a wheelchair for people to notice your disability. It’s so wrong. Huge props to you for travelling alone though despite all your issues! You are amazing ❤️

Like, I 10000% appreciate teaching your kids abt service animals, but he’s not in training, he’s my own SD ^^; People always get so surprised when I tell them he’s actually mine lol. I always feel like people are more likely to think my SD is fake and I’m always worried abt access issues when we go to a new place bc I don’t “look disabled” and so many people think service dogs are only for the blind or people in wheelchairs. angelday8594 anyone can say they’re disabled. As of right now the only 2 questions an establishment can ask is 1) is it a service animal and 2) what tasks does it do. They can’t ask to demonstrate or anything. By having them federally registered and having official paperwork and ID that is required to be carried at all times it better helps prevent someone passing off an untrained pet as a service animal. Anyone can say they have a disability and make up a task the animal supposedly helps with. Along with these requirements I don’t think a service animal should be allowed to be owner trained. I think if it’s training to be a service animal it must be trained by professional trainers. Now with that I do say the government should pay for all or at least half of the training.
      It is too easy for someone to fake a service animal with current laws.

      Because you personally don’t agree with an owner trained service animal does not take away the legitimacy of an animal.

    I have a friend who's blind. We first met when we were all in a costume group, and she reached out to me and asked if I could be her eyes and keep her company at a scheduled meetup we were both attending because her parents couldn't be there. She didn't have a service dog yet, and she really wanted to go, but she was nervous to be by herself. I guess like I seemed to be the chillest person in the group. We ended up getting along great, and found we were both on the spectrum.
    Travel's pretty terrifying when you can't see--and yeah. People forget about you. I mean, travel is scary enough being autistic. I can't imagine compounding that with lack of vision. She once nearly tripped over her own service dog because a dude jumped in front of her while she was being guided through a doorway and made her dog stop abruptly. I had to be the service dog's service human and act as a buffer between the good working boy and grabby humans. Eesh.

      I was wondering: In Germany there is this sign that identifies a blind person: Three black dots on a yellow background. People wear it in a band around one arm or have their guide dog wear it. It's obviously not mandatory, but I think it would be useful in certain situations like being at the airport - situations where you want to be identified as blind.
      Is there anything like this in the US/wherever you are from?

    • @nicoleb117

      @@ChiaraBells hi! I'm from the US and have a vision impaired grandmother so what I can say is this; there aren't any indicators like that here from what I know. People can get patches for their service dog to wear that say 'sight dog' or 'blind' or things like that but no identifiers beyond that. Molly doesn't really use a cane so that can also miss what people think blind people 'should' look like unfortunately. We have a seriously bad problem with fake service dogs, I've even seen someone fake vision impairment with a freaking toy yorkie as her 'guide' dog, so I think people here have more of an attitude to not believe someone with a service dog especially if they have an invisible disability which really sucks.

      Yes! My daughter still has very good corrected vision for her eye condition at 7 years old but she has a high chance of losing her vision to a multitude of eye complications. She struggles with peripheral vision, depth perception and gets practically blinded by bright light and possibly other lighting situations. We're still figuring out her vision.
      I've had a few people try to argue with me about her need for the white cane that her TVI assigned to her and it's incredibly frustrating. My daughter hates that freaking cane, why would we fake her vision impairment and make her use the cane if she didn't actually need it? People are strange.

    • @blaireshoe8738
      @blaireshoe8738 4 роки тому +11

      @Catherine Aalders Blindness is a large spectrum. You can be totally blind, having no eyeballs. You can have specific types of blindness varying in effect, like Molly (put simply) can only see where light is coming from and shiny things it reflects off of (it's why she loves sequins and metallics). You can have eyesight that requires very strong prescription glasses. The kind of vision the previous comment is talking about is where the person has good enough sight to see and drive safely during the daytime (with strong prescription glasses, I imagine) but not good enough to safely drive at night (when poor lighting becomes a factor). To be legally blind, you don't have to be completely lacking all vision, just lacking a certain *level* of vision.

    There's sooo many things that this airport service needs improving
    1) They somehow expect you to balance a big bag on your lap and be able to hold on to Gallop while using a wheelchair
    2) No one told you the flight was delayed by 2 hours
    3) They left you alone for hours and didn't think of checking on you every now and then
    4) They did things without telling you e.g. taking away your suitcase to check it in
    It was a bit hard to watch as it feels really frustrating and Molly looked visibly stressed the entire time.
    I have to imagine there's quite a lot of visually impaired people that use their services and the staff needs to be trained to be able to at least use adequate verbal cues and common sense to assist them.

    Years ago I traveled with my grandma who is blind and deaf in one ear. I was only 15 at the time. She had planned the whole trip, and was supposed to have the wheelchair and escort. But none of the help ever happened, So 15 year old me who had never been on a plane or in an airport before had to figure out everything we needed to do and navigate everything. It was so scary for both of us. I still remember how stressful it was when I had to go through the security check first, and then they took her cane to scan through the machine, and she was having a really hard time going through the check without it but they wouldn't let me help, so I had to just stand there and wait at the other end. Luckily we made It where we needed to go, but it was a terrible experience.

    Thank you, Molly for showing the reality of your struggle and your hard won victory. I'm so glad you have your Mom and Mesa and Gallup, but at the end of the day, you really deserve better accommodations for your blindness. Thank you for showing us what it really is like. You are very brave and I admire you showing your raw emotions as you tackle this difficulty on your own. You're making a difference!!

    I’m watching this with my service dog! I am not blind but I have some physical and impairments and processing issues. I find flying very stressful but my service dog loves the airport. She loves that she gets to go through the scanners alone while I wait on the other side. She loves how fast the wheel chair goes.
    I’ve learned to make sure that there is always someone along the way that knows I need help. I call ahead to let them know we need a non bulkhead window seat. I let them know when I check that I need extra help they bring me in a wheel chair. I let them know if Chloe needs a pee stop or if I do. I have asked them to bring me to Starbucks! My service dog was not trained for it but I can tell her to bring me to Starbucks and she will find the nearest one as long as she can smell it!
    When I get to the gate I’ve learned to tell them that I do need extra time boarding and I most likely will not hear them announce boarding.
    It has taken a lot of trial and error.
    I really like this video. I’m still watching it. I think it’s natural to be anxious in this type of situation. I think as you travel on your own more you will learn more ways for you and gallop to find solutions together.
    If this happens again you can call the airline help desk from inside. Chloe can find the bathroom for me and also can bring me to a person stop I can ask for help.
    Even though our disabilities are not at all related but this video is super relatable. Thanks Molly!

      I get her point and how she is treated is awful but sitting next to a dog can be horrible if you are afraid of them. I was for years and I could not have sat there for an hour. But good airlines should make a switch possible.

      MissDatherinePierce I feel like if they just asked nicely because of a phobia staff could help and all, but someone yelling at her for having the dog is just wrong. I understand what you're saying though.

      Yes that’s on the airline. I always tell them when I book that I will be bringing my guide dog and do a follow up call 48 hours ahead. So they know there could be an issue and to inform the cabin crew who can make adjustments. I preboard and the attendant can easily take note of my seat and ASK the person if they mind and give them a choice so that I don’t have to argue with some stranger

    This needs to be a part of ALL airline employee orientations in a "meet the needs of the customer" section. I was traveling while in a walking cast and had a flight attendant in the Miami airport yelling at me to "Hurry up!" and then she proceeded to LITERALLY push me down the aisle to my seat. I was LIVID but I knew that if I had any type of altercation with her I would have had an entire flight of passengers mad at ME for delaying the flight.

    I hate that even though Molly is the one in need of assistance, SHE'S the one that is still overly considerate of everyone else 😭 like asking for a window seat to save the safety implications on others of Gallop being near/in the aisle. bless you girl you go through so much!! horrendous that something as frequently used as airports still don't have procedures in place to make sure people get where they need to go..
