  • San Gerardo de Dota is famous for quetzals, but a worthwhile for many reasons. Check out our collection of beautiful bird shirts at jabiru-clothing.com
When people visit San Gerardo de Dota, birdwatching is usually the number one thing on their list. Even for non-birders. The bird everyone is looking for is the Resplendent Quetzal. And while the Resplendent Quetzal is an almost magical creature, this little valley hosts so much more than these irridescent beauties. Check out this video to learn more about this beautiful corner of the world.

🎥 Some of the footage of the resplendent quetzal is licensed from Envato Elements, most notably Matthew Williams-Ellis's splendid shot of the Quetzal entering and leaving its nest. The other footage was filmed by me on site.

Over-tourism is our fault. Your excellent videos entice others to bird in Costa Rica. I started birding San Gerardo back in the 80’s with groups from the US. We have met the enemy and HE is US.

I really like your videos. They were great for preparing me for my trip to Costa Rica last month and now that I am back I appreciate them even more as I have been to these places. I was with a small group and we found all our quetzals ourselves and without any crowds. I certainly prefer it that way. That being said, I do try to see a rare vagrant if it shows up close to where I live. But that's fun also because I know I'll meet many of my local birding buddies there. I would not travel long distances to see a rare bird. Looking forward to your next video from cerro de la muerte. I am sure you saw Volcana Juncos 😍

Thanks so much for the kind words, it really means a lot! Sounds like you had a great time in Costa Rica - I'm happy to hear that and to even have helped a little :)
On "chasing" vagrants: Great point, that social aspect of birding can be really great! Thinking about it, it's something I do miss a little bit here.

Don't forget Canadians when it comes to twitching. I'm in Southern Ontario and when a rarity shows it's insane. If and when I go to CR the resplendent quetzal would be tops on my must see list but I understand your concerns

      Haha, I had no idea!
To be fair - while I'm not a fan of the crowds the guides do a great job at managing them. It was all calm and respectful. I do think it's great that people get to experience this. And you can tell that it's given the town a great opportunity that the people are making the most of. Despite the quetzal "madness", it's actually one of my favorite spots in the country!

We stayed in San Gerardo for a few days last July and the birding (and everything else) was wonderful. The groups of people at the side of the road made it easy to know where the quetzals were and we got some good pictures, but it was much more special to find other quetzals on our own as we were walking along the road later that morning.

Very true - it’s much more rewarding to find birds on your own but the groups are a good fallback option

tourist overcrowding is a problem .. i'm a loner & freak out in lg groups, but, problem is tourism = 💴💶💷💵 & ppl are social creatures, the 'water cooler' effect ... even in scotland we see the damage left behind .. the canary islands & parts of europe are seeing violent confrontations between locals & tourists .. hope it doesn't come to this in CR ..

This is where we stayed for a few days on our trip. The people at the cabinas los quetzal were incredible and the birds and scenery were beautiful

I agree, Dota is absolutely fantastic and the people really are incredible. When I went up there last year, my car broke down in the valley and our hosts went above and beyond to help us.

Wow, these were SPECTACULAR images! Well done, especially the hummingbird footage was great, loved it. Well, despite the fact, that the Quetzal footage was amazing, we do not really like these crowds of people. Remember a trip to Namibia years ago, when DOZENS of buses stopped behind us at a group of lions in Etosha...has it's pros and cons.

Thanks! It really does take away from the experience a bit but overall it’s such a lovely trip up there and I already know I’m going back next year. Once a year is enough for me though 😅
It always feels a bit dishonest to be complaining about these crowds, given that in the end we’re part of the crowd too… but yes, and poor lions 🫤

I live in the US (New England) and tend not to chase certain vagrants because of potential crowding. As long as the bird is not disturb, I’m ok with the general public appreciating their presence , but it takes away from the pleasures I experience while birding.

Agreed, it just feels strange to watch a bird from a crowd. To be fair, the guides in Dota do a good job of managing the groups and respecting the birds. But it’s really the only time I’ve experienced something like this here. Germany also seems to be quite tame in comparison to what you sometimes see from the UK or the US (and apparently Canada). Then again, I really try to refrain from twitching…
