    Clouds are challenging to paint. Maybe a bit daunting yet important in any landscape painting. I like how you shared your dry brush technique to create fluffy 3d-looking clouds. Cheers!

    This is exactly what I’ve been looking for for this type of cloud. I haven’t been able to figure them out. This is amazing! I’m excited to view this video over and over and then attempt them. What’s so funny is that I watched these clouds get painted. I saw it happen. Yet…..I look at them as they form more and more and think “What the heck? Did I blink? How’d he do that? How is there suddenly a perfect, realistic cloud??” Even though I just watched how it was done. Skill like this blows my mind. It’s nothing and then WHAM it’s like a photo. Whaaaaaaat?? AMAZING! Thank you for this wonderful insight into how you paint clouds!

      Vielen Dank! Aber ist es nicht schöner, wenn man diese 10 Jahre als Reise sieht und eben so lange braucht, um so malen zu können? Manche lernen es auch in kürzerer Zeit. Aber man muss eben einfach die Zeit investieren...malen ist eine Fähigkeit, die man lernen kann, es erfordert viel Zeit und Leute mit Talent lernen schneller. Dennoch fällt das Können NICHT vom Himmel, selbst die ganz großen Maler aus allen Epochen mussten Jahre ihres Lebens damit verbringen, an der Staffelei zu üben bevor sie ihre Meisterwerke auf die Leinwand gebannt haben. Deshalb - jetzt anfangen und in 10 Jahren RICHTIG gute Bilder malen können :-))))

      Thanks a lot :-))) I let the first layer dry completely, it really needs to be bone dry. And as a medium I am meanwhile using only linseed oil on my water mixable oils. Sounds stupid, but I need the longer drying time, really can`t stand it when the colour dries up so quick that you can not blend it properly.

    I’m really struggling with getting my sky flat (I get brush strokes) and then not ruining it when I blend the clouds. Do you use any medium for this? And how long do you leave to dry? I’m using Alkyd, but thinking of switching to Artisan when doing the sky

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  2 роки тому +2

      I use linseed oil but in the stage of the underpainting not that much, just a few drops to give the colour a better flow. I use very big brushes (1-2 inch, VERY soft ones) to blend the colours and to get a very flat surface. Give this method a try - and do not apply a lot of pressure while blending, just like petting a parrot, VERY soft and VERY gentle movements with hardly any pressure at all, it flows more or less...hard to explain. I am pretty much like you when it comes to visible brush stroke marks...I do NOT like them opposed to other artists that even use some medium to enhance that "artisty brush stroke" look.

    Do you let the sky dry before painting the clouds? Brilliant videos!

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you :-))) Yes, I let the underpainting completely dry before I apply the next and final layer with the clouds. Takes a few days with the water mixable oils but you need to do it, otherwise it is not possible, the colours would become one big mess.

    Thank you.
    Amazing art by the way.

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  2 роки тому

      Thank you :-))) The only way I found to really speed the drying time up is to lay the painting into direct sunlight (in summertime, it needs to be warm). I did this for the first time this year and do not know if this might perhaps harm the colour pigments...but I simply had to and it really helped. Another "trick" is to just work on several paintings at the same time frame - that`s what I do meanwhile and it really works. Not only do the paintings have enough time (days or even weeks) time to dry, I can change the subject matter from painting to painting at this also helps to keep the motivation up every time you sit on the easel.

    It's a fantastic way of doing clouds. What oil medium are you taking. When you do your sky, do you let it dry ? or you begin right after ? Thank you for you advise, if you have time to give it to me and others.

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  6 місяців тому +1

      Thank you Angie :-))) I am solely using linseed oil (no harsh thinner like turpentine or white spirirt, this stuff is going to kill you if you paint a lot like I do). I apply the first layer, the blue of the background, let this layer dry completely for a couple of days (bone dry, rather 5 more days of waiting than the second layer of colour lifting off the first layer of colour) and then I apply the next layer of colour. The next layer needs to be nearly the pure paint out of the tube, it really needs to cover the blue of the background so do just use a hint of oil to give the colour a little bit of a better flow.

    Hi
    How long do you leave your background to dry before doing your clouds? (I haven't used oils before). Could this technique of yours come out as good with acrylics? I'm new to all this. What would be your go-to colours you use (I have noted the colours at the beginning) for your cloud pictures? All the gear and no idea! (Yet). Thank you.

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  Рік тому

      As long as the background needs to completely dry - and I mean bone dry, not just a bit dry. A couple of days, even a week or two if the painting has to dry in a cold area. You could use drying retarder for your acrylics, this might helpt to extend the drying time but as I did not use any drying retarder in my "acrylics days" I have no idea if this will work. I use the same 7 colours for all of my paintings: Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red, Raw Sienna, Dioxazine Purple, Phthalo Blue and Lamp Black. You`re welcome :-)

    Ganz toll! Als begeisterter Hobbyfilmer liebe ich Wollen. Leider sieht man wirklich überzeugende Wolken nur sehr selten auf Gemälden oder in gemalten Hintergründen für Film, Theater Dioramen oder Modellbahnanlagen, wo sie eigentlich fotorealistisch sein sollten. Das sind wirklich die besten gemalten Wolken, die ich gesehen habe. Hatte mich auch schon daran versucht. Die Farben bekomme ich hin, aber es hapert an der Textur.und am Lichteinfall. Habe auf jeden Fall eine Menge von diesem Video gelernt.

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  2 роки тому +2

      Vielen Dank für das Lob :-))) Ja, Wolken zu malen wirkt einfach, aber es sind die Feinheiten die den Unterschied machen zwischen einer Wolke die wirklich 3D-mäßig auf der zweidimensionalen Fläche "daherkommt" und einer Wolke, die einfach flach aussieht. Aber man kann es lernen, einfach weiter meine Wolkentutorials anschauen und ÜBEN ÜBEN ÜBEN :-)))

The tubes of paint used are flashed so quickly it is impossible to read. One screen of a list of the colors would be more helpful.

      Thank you so much Ruth and Michael :-))) I will include a little list of the colours that I use - that truly is a good idea, the small letters on the tubes are really hard to read.

    Can we paint clouds with acrylic color and using a filbert paint brush on a thick paper?

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  Рік тому +1

      You can :-))) But it is way more difficult than painting with oils...acrylics are basically dry the moment you put them on...so you have to layer, you can hardly blend them if you do not add some drying retarder. Therefore I always recommend to switch to oils - it is really a lot easier than with acrylics!

    To varnish this, do I use gloss or matt? Thanks, great video

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  2 роки тому +1

      You can use whatever you like better ;-))) I personally prefer a more matte varnish, when the varnish is too glossy, the painting reflects like crazy and it is nearly impossible to get a decent photo of it.

    Klasse deine Tutorials. Ich bin inzwischen von Acryl auf water soluble oils gewechselt und bin begeistert. Nur mit den Pinseln von der Acrylmalerei klappt es nicht immer. Darf ich Mal nachfragen, welche Pinsel du benutzt

      Hi Christine und vielen Dank für dein Lob :-))) Super dass du auf die water mixable oils umgestiegen bist - das ist doch wirklich wesentlich einfacher als mit diesen störrischen, ständig eintrocknenden Acrylfarben. Ich nutze in der Hauptsache die Pinsel vom Boesner. Weiche Da Vinci Cosmotop (ich hab aber auch noch drei Stück die über 20 Jahre auf dem Buckel haben, aber IMMER NOCH super funktionieren und keine Haare verlieren, ebenfalls vom Boesner, Marke Kolibri, Ochsenhaar) aber auch synthetische (haben nen schwarzen Griff, da steht aber leider nix drauf was die genaue Bezeichnung angeht). Und für die superfeinen Details hol ich mir so 12er Packs China Billigsets von eBay. Die sind erstaunlich gut, verlieren praktisch keine Haare und halten recht lang. Dann viel Spaß noch beim pinseln und viele Grüße :-)))))) - Tobi

    What colors are you using here? What colors did you use to make the base colors? Blues & white or did you actually use gray?

    • @brennerfineart

      Hi Susan, I`m using here water mixable oils from Winsor&Newton (link is in the description box). I am using here Titanium White, Cadmium Red, Phthalo Blue, Dioxazine Purple and Lamp black. I am mixing all the colours with this selection.

      Thank you!!! I'm attempting to do this with acrylics, although I know it's not going to be so easy not able to blend as easily as with oil based paints. The purple colors you're using for shading are beautiful

    What is the drying time for Water Mixable Oils?

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  Рік тому

      It depends...when you use water it takes a few days, if you take oil (what I prefer meanwhile) it takes a few days more. And it needs to be warm, so in winter time it takes even longer.

      @@10arieli water mixable oils - a kind of oil colour that can be blended with oil but also with water. Although I prefer to use oil to thin down the colour meanwhile not water - that leaves me much more time to blend.

    Is it okay to paint like this on an aryclic paint?

    • @brennerfineart
      @brennerfineart  2 роки тому +1

      Trying this with acrylics is a lot more difficult than trying it with oils. Save some money and get water mixable oils, they are FAR BETTER than acrylics, believe me, far easier to work with as they are not the moment dry you put them on the canvas. You have a lot more time to blend and get the volume in that is needed to paint in a realistic way.
