  • In this sequel to The Jolson Story, we pick up the singer's career just as he has returned to the stage after a premature retirement. But his wife has left him and the appeal of the spotlight isn't what it used to be. This time Jolson trades in the stage for life in the fast lane: women, horses, travel. It takes the death of Moma Yoelson and World War II to bring Jolson back to earth - and to the stage. Once again teamed with manager Steve Martin, Jolson travels the world entertaining troops everywhere from Alaska to Africa. When he finally collapses from exhaustion it takes young, pretty nurse Ellen Clark to show him there's more to life than "just rushing around".

I just love the Jolson films and think Larry Parks was great, for some unknown reason his songs brings tears to my eyes, especially The Anniversary Waltz. I once went to a fancy dress party as Jolson, I used Black boot polish on my face, did I have a job trying to get it off.

Warrior 135, I bet it won't be long before this movie is taken off the airwaves. My beloved Aunt Dora Mestesky-Ackerman dated Al Jolson's younger brother who owned a drugstore and was a pharmacist which I believe was in the D.C. area. One does not hear much about the brother (name I do not remember). Iris Rosenberg-Cooper of Manassas, VA and a fan of the incomparable Mr. Al Jolson.

I saw those movies as a kid and I totally fell in love with Larry parks it's weird but when I hear Jolson I see Larry parks. The man deserve to have a long career he was a wonderful actor. He just made me love him. Just like the song he sang You Made Me Love You. Still love them to this day and I have never been able to forgive the house on American Activities Committee for destroying his career. I think that probably led to an early death from the stress. He worked again later when intelligent people prevailed but I do think that his treatment shortened his life.

Three Jolsons on screen at 0.46 - 0.50. On stage (Parks playing Parks playing Jolson), beside the camera (Parks playing Jolson) and the guy in the hat following the camera (Jolson cameo)!

In reality, Jolson wasn't so understanding about not being able to play himself in The Jolson Story; he also wasn't as complementary with respect to Larry Parks' performance. In the depiction of Parks as Jolson performing Swanee at the Winter Garden, Jolson told the producers, The kid doesn't move like me, and he insisted on performing his own inimitable dancing in blackface while being photographed from a great distance. This is the only time that Jolson is actually in the film.

I loved Jolson so much as a kid, but now, as an adult, I realize that, even back then, he was so wrong in so many ways. It's something that the whole mentality of MAGA really has to get over. Or go back to before Jackie Robinson, or Jesse Owens, or common sense, tolerance, understanding, and decency. Or go back to the true sentiments of the founding fathers, and how much they would despise this country, with the likes of Donald Gump and his adoring racist, sexist, and homophobic dotards.

Al Jolson was no racist. He starred in a musical with Cab Calloway in the mid 1930s They were treated and treated each other as equals. When a restaurant in Connecticut refused to serve Eubie Blake, Jolson personally invited him into that restaurant, and the restaurant could not bar Eubie Blake from entering. Try to drop the entertainment persona, and see how the man actually lived.

@@dovbarleib3256 Uh, listen. I really liked Al Jolson's music, and even Larry Parks in "The Jolson Story", and, "Jolson Sings Again". And, yes, I've heard all of the stories about Al, and how he supported black musicians. But, all of Hollywood knew what a selfish and mean son of a bitch he was in real life. Petty and arrogant. And, ask Ruby Keeler, one of his ex wives, what he was like. No racist or not, so many of his songs, and, his makeup, are just simply vile and inappropriate now. Continue playing his songs that aren't offensive to other races. It's a no brainer. But, no more Mammy or shufflin' along. Please.

Mr. Smith, We can't watch a movie without getting into politics, can we? It's this kind of stuff that has bifurcated the country. There was a time when minstrel shows and Jolson's "Black face" were watched by white people as part of vaudville shows. Those days are long gone. Our country evolves. Change is inveitable. Yes, the USA has its "warts", yet people are coming over our borders by the tens of thousands to find a better life. Many of the country's Founders were slave owners. That was viewed as acceptable back then. Almost everyone of them was killed by "The Crown" for their rebellion. Our Civil War helped do away with slavery. Yet prejudice still exists. Trump is an egotist and a narcicist. More and more of his followers are seeing this and are moving away from whatever it is he is selling. As for "dotards"? You'll find "sexist, racist and homophobic" bigots in both political parties and on many a street corner in every town of this country. Recall the Golden Rule; "Do unit others as you would have then do unto you."

It’s the talent, performance, & entertainment I look at. Ones personal life has nothing to do with their talent. Times have changed, we can’t go back and edit out everything that’s uncomfortable or socially unacceptable now. Tolerance is a good virtue to have nowadays.
