SEPARATE DREADLOCKS: CUT OR PULL?!

  • A important part of dreadlock maintenance is separation. Dreadlocks are made from hairs which knot together. Unfortunately these hairs don't always knot exclusively with hairs within their own dreadlock and you will often find them knotting up with hairs in neighbour dreads. These dreadlocks will need to be separated back out again in order to avoid them from knotting together further and forming 'congo' dreads. In this video I will compare the differences between separating via cutting and separating via pulling.

    This video helped me A LOT. I've been freeforming since December 2014. I noticed a mini Congo on the side and it was not budging. Three locs were in a relationship lol. I contemplated on using scissors but came across your video. Thank you. With lots of patience, water and praying to GOD lol I was able to separate all three successfully.

    I find that the best, easiest, and least painful time to pull apart dreads is when I wash them and they are all sudsy from the shampoo. I have a pretty sensitive scalp so I never used to pull apart my dreads because of the pain, but in the shower, I feel nearly no discomfort at all during separation. When dreadlocks are wet, they are easier to separate than dry dreads but with shampoo in the mix, its like 10 times easier on you as well as your scalp.

Took your advice and carefully, slowly cut them apart towards the big daddy one in the middle and it totally worked. After working them tighter with some bees wax they look fresh and tight.....and seperated!! Thanks so much dude!!! 🤙🏽💫💥

    For me personally, pulling my dreads apart is the ABSOLUTE WORST part of having dreads. -I'm one of those people who ideally should be pulling them apart daily... but don't, because even though I have a fairly high pain tolerance, headaches are my kryptonite, and I end up with a headache and sensitive scalp for the rest of the day... Sometimes 2 days. :(
    I tried cutting once but it ended badly, so I now stick to pulling them apart every 3 days to a week (but when I'm leaving it a week, I try to keep my hair tied up as much as possible, so they don't join too much).
    In saying all of that though, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my dreads, and can't imagine ever getting rid of them! :D

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому +1

      Brad Stone There are many different types of extension - different materials, different methods of locking up the extension, different methods of attaching the extension. My personal recommendation is not to attach them straight onto short young dreadlocks... but beyond that you'll need to ask the person who you want to create / attach the extensions.

      Yo I hope you're journey is going great!
      Seeing as you've been doing it for a year (hopefully), could you give me a few pointers?
      Its only been 2 months for me. I've got straight hair and started with 10-11 inches on the top with my sides shaved. So far it's been going pretty well, I started with the towel rub and rubbed for the first few weeks but after that I've just been letting them go. I've got about 8 locs getting pretty strong so far however 2 of them are about 1.5 inches wide and split about 4 inches in where I've tried separating by pulling but fail because they're too thick. The rest are pretty small, about half an inch thick at their thickest areas and all of them are loose at the roots, including the 1.5 inch ones. The rest of my hair is loose but curly from no maintenance and very slighted sectioned however I don't like how they are sectioned..
      Do you think I should restart, or would it be possible to cut the thick ones and section all of them with rubber bands and then go from there?
      My main concern is I feel if I cut the thick ones they'll fall out as the roots are very loose still.

      @@rxev.mp3 helllo ! Yes my journey is going well . My dreads are so cool ( I look like a lion lol ) . . I faced huge problems with my dreads . I did not retwists them + a lot of them were skinny + I just seperated them after every shower = the roots become so thin that when I tried to seperate in the next shower they fell off . I saved my dreads by merging 3 / 2 dreads together . They became stronger and better looking . 2 are a little big but everything is doing well . Roots are strong . Now I retwists them once every 3 months to not repeat the same mistake again !! This is my strory and now I understand fully my dreads . Retwisting is mandatory if you want them to not fell off . In your case 2 months are nothing . I highly recommend restarting ( the sections should be not too thick and not too skinny ) to not regret anything in the future . And cutting dreads in half is very bad . The new roots will be fked up . In worst case you should merge the skinny ones because I can guarantee they won't last . Stay away from rubber bands . Death sentence to your roots

    i have had my dreads in for over 4 years and want to know if there is any way to separate the original dreads. a lot of them had congo'd together in the very beginning and i wasnt consistent with separating back then and some of them are just thicker than i want them now. before dreading my hair this time i had the same problem with my 2 year old dreads and ended up just doing the conditioner/combing method and redoing them but then my hair was SO THIN! i dont want to have to take that route again but i dont want them this thick for the rest of my life. help please?

      Brenda Watt The problem is that the hairs inside a dreadlock don't run from the root vertically down - they zigzag inside the dreadlock so if you try and split one by cutting it you're going to end up severing a lot of hairs midway along their length and so the two new halves that you get out are going to often be damaged and weak. When possible I recommend people to just brush out the dreadlocks in question and then resection them - as you know, that can be pretty rough on the hair too... but there's no real win-win option, dreadlocks are complete structures, they can't really be dividing up once they're formed.

But they became very tangled after I had washed and dried them, and I had to spend a good 30 minutes untangling and separating everything. I was wondering whether that is a normal thing to happen, immediately after washing them?

      I had the same issue on the back of my head. I wore my dreads in a pony tail almost daily and didn't bother to pull them apart, so they eventually started clinging together in one massive Congo. It took a while but I found I could pull them apart easily (better when wet). It seemed overwhelming at first because you don't know where it starts and ends, but I still had a general idea of where each dread was before the Congo. I just started on one side, and started pulling. I had to start but cutting a *very* small part of it near the bottom, but once I did that I just pulled the rest down to the roots. Then I did the same thing with the rest of the hair. Once you get started and get the first couple separated, the rest will be a breeze. It's just getting started that seems a little confusing and overwhelming.

    I have two HUGE congos at the back of my head and I don't really want them, but what happens if I were to cut them and then maybe a year later I wanted to take out my dreadlocks? Would that make that section of the hair shorter since the Congo was cut? Because I know the Congo is now too long to separate
    .

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      ***** You sort of have two options when it comes to splitting thick dreadlocks / well formed congos. You can either split them at the root and force them to start growing out split - at a later date you can then trim off the unsplit part and be left with perfectly healthy individual dreads... but this is obviously very slow - you have to wait for them to grow out split from scratch and this will take years... and they look a little strange while growing out split... and also when you do finally come around to cutting off the excess, well the new separate dreads will be shorter than the rest. The other option is to simply cut down the middle - this one is kind of what people go for as it's instant... but when you do that you can end up with the two halves being much weaker than regular dreadlocks as you sever a lot of hair links... however when the alternative is to grow them out and cut the excess off anyway, I guess it doesn't really make much difference.If you cut a dreadlock in half and sever some of the hair links, if you do come to them brush the dreadlocks out you'll find that you get a fair bit of loose hair out of those dreads due to all the severed links. It's not all going to be shorter, but more thinner overall. However hair is generally going to be thinner after dreadlocks whether you've cut congos or not simply due to the separating. I think really it's not a huge worry.

    Help... my eight year old son started getting dreads (neglect style) about two months ago. He's white, but his hair seems to dread really fast. My husband tells me to leave them alone, but what has happened is that about 1/2 of his head (underneath and one side) have formed dreads that are partially separate on the ends, but essentially have become one mass connected at the base of his head. If I leave it alone will it continue to separate and form individual dreads on it's own, or will it just keep creating one massive chunk of matted hair. It's already to the point it is very difficult to separate. I tried one and it took a very long time and was painful for my son. Any suggestions!

      The required length depends on the method you're going to use - different methods work best with different lengths of hair:
      Hair Length Required For Dreadlocks
      Dreadlocks can be started from twists if they're left long enough - but this only works on afro-textured hair. People do mention it, but mainly those who have that type of hair texture. I have caucasian textured hair and twisting does nothing for that hair type so it's not something that I personally blog about.
