My Parents Loved Me Until My Grandparents Kept Giving Them Money To Support Me.

Unfortunately, this type of toxic dynamic between parents and their children is quite common. I used to know a woman, who treated her kids the same way that OP's parents treated her. Across the board, from the financial irresponsibility, living outside her means, to relying on handouts to stay caught up on bills, all of it. It's like the same story. This lady never kept a job long enough for it to have a positive financial impact, but always seemed to have her hair done, her nails done, a full pack of cigarettes and booze in the fridge. Her kids be damned. The only time they even got a passing acknowledgment was when she needed handouts because she couldn't pay her rent or the lights went out or they had no food in the house or something along those lines. She was really good at squeezing out the crocodile tears, going into hock with everyone she knew, not paying them back and then wondering why no one was ever there when she found herself in a real predicament. Just like the parents in this story, she never ever took accountability for her actions or was able to look within herself and see that she was the root cause of all of the problems in her life. Even with both of her marriages disintegrating, her kids growing up and cutting contact with her then eventually barring her from seeing her grandchildren, none of it was a wake-up call. I'm sure, to this day, she's got to be in her sixties now, she still whines to anyone who will listen wondering “what went wrong” with her life. Some people are beyond hope.
How do parents not want more for their kid?
They weren't receiving the money directly. OP received all benefits money could buy without monetary transactions passing by the parents. They were receiving, but it wasn't enough for them. The closer she got to adulthood, therefore being able to bypass the parents to access grandparents, the angrier they got.
