The Young Pope was just waiting for The Patriarch of Moscow to say that He wishes to return under the magisterium of Rome ...until then not much to discuss
What is the statue that the patriarch is looking at? Also, what’s the context of the scene and how does the statue and the awkward silence fit into it.
It’s the Venus of Willendorf, a fertility statue that’s over 25,000 years old. another character mentioned it’s hypnotic quality so it’s kind of a running joke that it keeps catching the attention of these religious men
I imagined that the reason for the awkward silence was because of the idolatrous nature of having a pagan votive figure in the office of the pontiff so the patriarch’s reaction was like “wwhhhhaaaat? Why do you have that here?”

Just goes to show how little you actually know about the subject.
I assume you mean the Catholic Pope of Rome, not the Orthodox Pope of Alexandria nor the Coptic Pope of Alexandria….(there is no Orthodox Pope of Rome since 12/25/800).
The full title of the Christ's Church is as the Roman Canon says. And all orthodox believers if the Catholic, apostolic faith. Roman Rite Christians are generally very unhappy about the Modernist popes especially Paul VI and Francis.Etymologically, modernism means an exaggerated love of what is modern, an infatuation for modern ideas, "the abuse of what is modern", as the Abbé Gaudaud explains (La Foi catholique, I, 1908, p. 248). The modern ideas of which we speak are not as old as the period called "modern times". Though Protestantism has generated them little by little, it did not understand from the beginning that such would be its sequel. There even exists a conservative Protestant party which is one with the Church in combating modernism. In general we may say that modernism aims at that radical transformation of human thought in relation to God, man, the world, and life, here and hereafter, which was prepared by Humanism and eighteenth-century philosophy, and solemnly promulgated at the French Revolution. J.J. Rousseau, who treated an atheistical philosopher of his time as a modernist, seems to have been the first to use the word in this sense ("Correspondance à M. D.", 15 Jan. 1769). Littré (Dictionnaire), who cites the passage; explains: "Modernist, one who esteems modern times above antiquity". After that, the word seems to have been forgotten, till the time of the Catholic publicist Périn (1815-1905), professor at the University of Louvain, 1844-1889. This writer, while apologizing for the coinage, describes "the humanitarian tendencies of contemporary society" as modernism. The term itself he defines as "the ambition to eliminate God from all social life". With this absolute modernism he associates a more temperate form, which he declares to be nothing less than "liberalism of every degree and shade" ("Le Modernisme dans l'Église d'après les lettres inéditesde Lamennais", Paris, 1881).
Who are the Liturgical costume advisers for this program? The mitre and cope are worn by the pope and other bishops only at liturgical celebrations in Church and at the altar, never sitting at a desk. It makes the whole thing look foolish!
Giovanni Serafino And that is the headgear of a Russian Metropolitan, not the Patriarch. The whole thing is glorified Disney, unfortunately, because there is a serious point to be made.
Pretty sure the Pope in this show makes a point of dressing extravagantly as a display of power and glory to God or something, but I dont know about the Patriarch. Knowledge about Orthodoxy is unfortunately very rare in the West
The whole show is a joke on icons and it never ever aims at accuracy. The main character is like a disillusioned brat who plays pope, the show is about him, not about the papacy, it hardly matters whether something is plausible or not, the pope thing is just a way of exploring a troubled life and personality.
And when you know there’s “Dies Irae” in catholic requiem mass on one side and “Repose with the Saints Christ our Lord” in orthodox funeral, you know which side propagates love and prayer for one’s soul. Glad to be Eastern Orthodox... thank God.

My interpretation: They were silent, neither wanted to argue, neither wanted to relent... Orthodox patriarch looked at the pagan idol displayed, thinking to himself nothing changed for the better and confirming his assumptions... Pope simply got a good excuse to go "so sorry, really wished to talk, but can't..." Lastly for the goodbye... what a perfect detail, in soviet regions friends kissing left cheek when meeting and when departing ! and Jude went for the second but he left !!! just perfect !
Soviet regions? Really?
In Russia, we NEVER kiss, when meeting friends. Only family members kiss each other.
But no kissing hands and neither the hat, the patriarch has a bigger hat
@@GonzoInside Зачем же вы, Сирожа, дезинформируете западную общественность относительно наших традиций? Мы целуемся при встрече - троекратно с друзьями, давними знакомыми. Троекратно. @@tliloselotl_ ... In the Russian Orthodox Church, priests of equal rank or well-known can greet each other by kissing each other's hand - they hold each other's hand and kiss it at the same time. Unfortunately, I did not find a photo or video, but whoever visits service in a church could see this - such a greeting is accepted when meeting at a service or when approaching communion. The priests can greet each other by kissing each other on the shoulder.
The Young Pope was just waiting for The Patriarch of Moscow to say that He wishes to return under the magisterium of Rome ...until then not much to discuss
The pope should be stepping down, not the patriarchs acknowledging his false power
There's no way Russia will turn to Rome. They believe the West is as heretic as f**k
The patriarch might have been thinking about the metropolit of Leningrad who died from heart attack during the audience at Pope John Paul I.
@freneticness _ no, Eastern Orthodox bishops are chosen from among the monastic clergy.
@freneticness _ Dude, where are you getting your information from? Eastern Orthodox bishops CANNOT be married. They are ALWAYS chosen from among celibate clergy.
@freneticness _ He divorced his wife BEFORE he became a monk 🤦🏽♂️ he was a priest for less than a year before he left her. And btw, you say the Catholic Church is “insane” about these sorts of things, but you fail to realize that the Eastern Catholic Churches follow the exact same discipline as the Orthodox Churches in this matter. Just goes to show how little you actually know about the subject.
*Sees the Venus of Willendorf*
Patricharh's Mind: wwwwwWWWWWWwwwwwWWWWWWwwwwwwwWWWWww hey. hey.
that last turn was like dracula cape swirl movement
I so agree. I had to snicker at such an outlandish costume.
Oh, *now* it looks silly, does it?
That was an insult seeing that fertility doll.
Announcing the Notre Dame fire at the intro almost THREE YEARS IN ADVANCE...???
SO CUTE!
Love the Batmanesque use of the cloak 👍👍
One of the best scenes in the series.
It's more like a bulgarian patriarch than a Moscow
Just... ı love both...
and that's why i'll choose orthodoxy
And when you know there’s “Dies Irae” in catholic requiem mass on one side and “Repose with the Saints Christ our Lord” in orthodox funeral, you know which side propagates love and prayer for one’s soul. Glad to be Eastern Orthodox... thank God.
Lol shut the fuck up, you came here to talk shit instead of spread unity?
@@joeroganstrtshots881 talking truth is not talking shit. Btw, unity is not acceptable if not faced with the truth.
I've been to several Catholic funerals, and no one ever played Dies Irae at the mass.
@@veovis523 guess what - catholics needed few centuries just to get to conclusion that it might look like that it frightens people. Few centuries?! Mentality - better said: spiritual mentality. That’s the main difference between Cath. and Orth. For Catholics it’s all about death and Cross and crucifixion. For Orthodox it’s all about Resurrection. Enough said.
@@veovis523 nevertheless, it’s still used in some places....
My interpretation:
They were silent, neither wanted to argue, neither wanted to relent...
Orthodox patriarch looked at the pagan idol displayed, thinking to himself nothing changed for the better and confirming his assumptions...
Pope simply got a good excuse to go "so sorry, really wished to talk, but can't..."
Lastly for the goodbye... Patriarch wanted an orthodox bishops' goodby, kissing hands of each other, but the pope instead went for a mock cheek kiss, just because he didn't really want to kiss each other, nor be treated as an equal...
Christ rules his Church from his throne above the heavens regardless of the hard hearted men who lead her on Earth...
Song is Kalinka btw
The patriarch didn't do the Slav Squatt
Some like jewish rabbins
Dating after the age of 30 years.
Good on them choosing Kalinka😂👍🏻
Well, that dialogue went well
That sums up Catholic-Russian Orthodox relations….
Just two people in costumes acting as if they're there for some cosmicly important meeting
Time as comes we all Christian's should unites in war against evils
That song was Kalinka wasn't it?
Absolutely right
I love this scene.
This is an ancestor not an idol 🧠
Why does he have a turnip in a display case?
that's an old pornographic statue that cavemen used to jerk off to
Калинка, калинка, калинка моя!
В саду ягода малинка, малинка моя!
That's odd. Stalin had a much easier time getting the Russian Orthodox Church to do his bidding.
:/
Stalin killed many Russian Orthodox. And very many resisted and practiced their faith even when it was extremely dangerous.
St Patriarch Tikhon of blessed memory would disagree with you
Or the whole underground church for that matter

The Orthodox pope: "Look at Rome being pagan"
We Orthodox don't have a Pope.
@@JetShanghai I am Orthodox and we have a pope. The word pope is used to mean Patriarch
@@julieherz8909 Oriental Orthodox? I have never heard an Eastern Orthodox call one of ours a Pope. Not post-Schism.
@@JetShanghai Yeah. In our language it is "Papa" which means pope but without the Roman connotation. For example the "Pope of the Coptic Orthodox church of Alexandrea" is the title for the head of the holy synod of the Coptic church. He would be "first among equals" and not a central body like the Pope of Rome.
@@JetShanghai actually the Greek Orthodox bishop of Alexandria had the title “Pope and Patriarch”, but I know what you mean by us not having a pope.
Fucking Kalinka, I laughed my ass off!
Никогда Патриарх не станет целовать руку Папе. По поводу фильма- когда цивилизация приближается к своему краху- они начинают высмеивать своего Бога. Западная цивилизация катится к своему концу, давайте быстрее.
That young hot Pope was was strong in who he believed he must be for the sake of his Vatican 1 Roman Catholic Church he presided over then.
One question. Is “Kalinka Malinka” the ONLY thing Western people think about when thinking of the Russians? It is a folk piece, what does it have to do with Orthodoxy and this particular situation? And by the way, there are like a couple of hundred of other nationalities besides the Russians that call the Russian Orthodox Church their home. It is just stupid.
He reminds me of Father Spydrion only with a whiter beard. 🧐🙏🏼✝️🕊️
He does i agree
This is so painfully, painfully true....
This scene is actually confusing to me could someone explain why the Russian guy was staring at that statue
Pagan statue
that looks like barbarian stuff to russian
It's rather excessive that he'd wear a golden cope and miter in his office. That's not the proper use or attire for a pontiff in that situation. Those are liturgical vestments, not everyday, regal garments. This shows immaturity and narcissism.
Only a look of gradual disgust at an object of heresy speaks volumes.
he has the wrong hat (klobuk instead of kukol) and a pectoral cross instead of a Panagia
poor research on the Russian tradition ngl
what was that statue about?
It's the fastest he clicks the save me button thru the whole season
There was simply nothing to be said.
So many RC in comments going on about how any orthodox church would submit to Rome. To believe this is to completely misunderstand the issues that created the schism and quite frankly, lack any humility in the origin of the Church and the Patriarchs.
they should discuss about filioque
And THAT is how you treat schismatics.
What was that statue they both were looking at.
I like the music! Can someone tell me the name, please?
Kalinka ffs
Hahaha. The best scen of all series.
Whose England only to give blessing thy name ptttt
Patriarch Kirill I of Moscow. Nice.
What venus of willendorf actually doing in vatican
Catholic drip 🥶🥶🥶
It's very funny.
It's kind of accurate. The ROC can't get on with anyone, including other Orthodox.
Rome and the third Rome
En bayildigim sahneydi 😁😁😁very very good
Can someone explain this scene to me?
Pope is the head of the catholic church while the Russian Patriarch is a powerfull patriarch but still not as powerfull(at least in theory) with the first amoung equals the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.
