Skiing in the late 80's and early 90's in my opinion was a golden era!! Freestyle skiing was still "Freestyle" - Love this bump footage!!
Don't like the current moguls competition courses - way to formulaic and very boring in comparison.
Watching and skiing uneven bumps is so very much more satisfying than man made bumps.
I love seeing real mogul skiing done by great skiers. Seeing the improvisation and adaptation to the terrain is at the core of what mogul skiing interesting to me. So sad that that's been lost in today's version of what the sport has been diluted down into, at least for me.
I couldn’t agree more! Mogul skiing has become a niche part of our sport unfortunately. Most ski resorts groom EVERYTHING. And when you do find a bump field it looks like a bunch of upside down canoes thanks to the fat skis and snowboards. I’ll take what I can get I suppose
I grew up in Aspen in the 70 s 80s...wait I,m still here.But the old Hot Dog comps at Ajax Highlands that was skinny skidin at it's finest!

Full agreement. The current mogul courses are boring, repetitive and have basically killed the fun of bump skiing. The skiers are still great, it would be a big step in the right direction if they would just take them to the top of a natural mogul field, let them pick their own line, and give points for time to finish and style.
Makes me want to go out and buy some 203 cm slalom skis. Incredible footage, incredible athletes.

I remember Wang Wong, "Airborne" Eddie Ferguson, Penelope Street, Scott Brooksbank and more. Back before I wrecked my left knee, I used to ski like this. Love this video.

Skinny skis were much easier to bump ski than today's skis. So much fun -- especially on spring snow like in this video. My all time favorite skis to run the bumps were Rossignol 4S 203cm slalom skis. Don't get me wrong, modern skis are vastly superior in most ways, but the way the skinnies would deep flex and rebound out of the bumps was a sensation you can't duplicate today. I miss "running the bumps." Those days are pretty much gone.

Dynastar Omeglass 203’s on KT22 when it was a double chair. Bumps for breakfast!
I ripped bumps on 203 Salomon GS skies (Equipe 1S I believe, 2nd Gen) in the mid 90’s. They ripped in the bumps. Best ski I’ve ever had.

Long, skinny skis and they're still better than most skiers today.

Zipperline bump competitions took the style out of freestyle. The zipperline is a test of quick reflexes with none of the traditional hotdog sponteneity
It’s who can hang on going straight. I loved playing with my line in the bumps.

kinda wish there was more real-time footage. some good clips in the 7th minute to show just how fast they're going which is ridiculously impressive.

I’m sure I never looked this good, but I sure tried! I was skiing all the bumps runs in my teens (around the time this was filmed)
Thank heavens for knee replacements. Skiing like this is so much more difficult on those old straight skis.

@@jonstacks I remember one spring day skiing bumps at Killington with my friend, and I was feeling it. Then Donna ripped past me, and I looked at my friend and said, ' that was humbling". There is a reason she has won a gold medal. She bumps at a complete other level.

After Johnny Mosley Dinner roll...bump skiing became bland and boring, perfect bumps spaced evenly apart from preformed concrete.These are real bumps and real bump skiers. Fabled runs like Rolex at Steamboat or Gunbarrel in Heavenly..
Why did we use such long poles back then?
In fact they had shortened them compared to like 5 years before. But the sport developed even more with more standards and less freeskiing. Thus, also with tighter poleing techniques and shorter poles.
I don’t know but for me I needed a longer pole to reach far enough in front for my pole plants on the steep stuff. In this video knees are fun to watch but notice the pole action; every turn has a firm plant and push.
