Awesome! I was living in Courchevel at the time when this was made. I watched this movie endlessly and it defined the ski bum dream... and still does nearly thirty years later.
I was 17 when this came out - we all watched it for the first time on a Friday night before we skied at Whistler the next day. The coolest part about writing this now, is I know there are thousands of others guys out there that know much the film effected them too. Best times with my buds!
They were the days. Watched this film so much I had the narration in my head... "I looked down at his skis and it said 223, this was the day before a mogul competition and he was racing bumps in DH Boards."... Classic
What about: 'After Scott jumped the crowds started to leave and we began to pack up. But look who is in the starting gate. Notice the back handspring over the crevasse.' :-)
I skied with Scot 1/2 a day @ Alpine Meadows, Tahoe ( he was testing some downhill skis for K2... they were 210's ) and he out turned all of us Schmidiots ! It doesn't matter about the gear... greatness adapts... the best are the best anywhere, anytime... always.
Greg Plaskett Lived by License to Thrill with my brothers! We actually got our hands on the entire soundtrack (cassette tape), and it was our morning soundtrack as we headed to Copper Mountain to ski our legs off!!
I love this sequence. Also cool I have been one of the guys who crossed the "knife edge" roped into my buddies with instructions to jump to the opposite side of anyone who fell! Great times!
Thats what a lot of young skiers don't get when they watch these old ski vids. If these guys had today's skis they would be outskiing a lot of today's pro skiers.
It's funny you say this gear was rudimentary. I skied 207 cm K2 VO-Slaloms with Salomon 747 Equipe bindings and SX91 Equipe boots (do they even make rear entry boots anymore?) To me, that gear felt cutting edge. Tuckerman Ravine in New Hampshire. Fifty degree pitches on wind pack. Had to pull myself out of a couple crevasses, but it was fun. We only got 50 or 75 yards of pitch, not 200 like this. Good times. With a wife and kid to take care of, I don't hit pitches like that, anymore.
Ahh the 80's so much color so much fun. To this day I still ski 205's' tele. in everything. 24" rule? splitboard 1 turn for every 500 vert. Fat skis? whole nuther world.
this was my life back then. first pair of skis were Rossi's, then Dynastar, Volkl Renntiger, Fischer RC4 and finished up with Atomic. Loved those days. Knees are gone now.
the gear was just different. different gear, different ski style. they couldn't go as fast as now, that's the main difference. but those skis were ate the top in those days.
Are there two Couloir Poubelles in Cham? Because there is definitely a Couloir Poubelle off the top of Grand Montets, but this one appears to be off the Midi? Anyone know?
That's what they say in the film, they abseil into the Grand Montets one later and ski down to the Propaganda tune Frozen Faces. Quote "another couloir called the Poubelle, this one off the Grand Montets, and this time Murrary had us take the hard way in." Like Martin Mckay Skiing I could recite the whole script verbatim during the 90s. I've even bought or down loaded most of the music from Blizzard of Ahhs and Maltese Flamingo. Can't find much of the music for 'Good, the Rad and the Gnarly', I think most of it was produced just for the film and so was not released separately. Happy days
@hughcdavies Yeah, Ted Musgrave, Tom Blackwell and Bob Thompson did most of the music for GTRATN. I had an email exchange with Bob Thompson a few years back and he was very gracious. Great guitarist. If I remember correctly the only tunes not made specifically for the film were those by Barrington Levy and Propaganda.
I was living in Mammoth mid 80's... when the crud in the chutes was deep, they would also call them bicycle turns... I have a feeling Schmidt and co learnt a lot in the Sierra cement

Throughout my teenage years whenever skiing, references were made to this movie all the time.
It's by far the best ski movie ever.

Great film!! I had Murray Ball as a ski guide in Chamonix 89 or 90 something. Really
cool dude.
I looked over at this very spot. Crazy 🤪 😎
Great comments below, I worshiped this movie and the cast, License to thrill was the following movie and another super classic.

one of the best movies ever made
"Yeah I'll ski it for sure" Never forgot that line...
I love this sequence. Also cool I have been one of the guys who crossed the "knife edge" roped into my buddies with instructions to jump to the opposite side of anyone who fell! Great times!
Hands down, most legendary ski movie of all time
Imagine this crew on todays skiing equipment. They sure had some mojo back then!
Thats what a lot of young skiers don't get when they watch these old ski vids. If these guys had today's skis they would be outskiing a lot of today's pro skiers.
Remember hearing someone say, "those guys are crazy" and thinking, I want to ski like those guys....
Great old clip. Stumpy man the greatest ski film ever!
Go Glen plake Rock on
LOL I think all of us have a run in our past that *felt* like the Poubelle.
Comparatively it was a speedbump, sure, but it never feels like it.
So amazing
This was my dads faveret movie growing up. Now it's one of my faveret classics. (:
Fesno favorite silly

Best ski movie ever !! Saw it at a college at age 17 and it changed my skiing forever.
2:41 Wow, it's so steep he isn't really even skiing it, but rather jumping 180 degrees from one traverse to the next!
Ahh the 80's so much color so much fun. To this day I still ski 205's' tele. in everything. 24" rule? splitboard 1 turn for every 500 vert. Fat skis? whole nuther world.
And all of this was done on straight skis and rear entry boots...
Just rocks up, yeah I’ll ski it.
What year this film?
Classic!

this was my life back then. first pair of skis were Rossi's, then Dynastar, Volkl Renntiger, Fischer RC4 and finished up with Atomic. Loved those days. Knees are gone now.

2:42 classic 80's jump turns. The new gear is for cheaters & allows intermediates the ability to destroy great pow terrain.

(7) Gabriel J Marian - UA-cam
