My biggest draw with these controllers outside of Virtual Console is the Arcade Archives series. Being able to play some games like Shock Troopers, Metal Slug, OG Donkey Kong and Ninja Spirit with a Super Nintendo controller - as someone who isn't an arcade stick purist, mind you - feels amazing and comfy as hell. Shmups too; I'm so glad those were given their time to shine here!
Tetris Effect Connected has a “classic” mode that mimics NES/GB rules and removes Zone functions. It’s in the multiplayer options but can be played offline vs bots. Would pair very well with the NEScons.
It makes no sense. Why does Nintendo always do dumb shit like this? Like, what other company limits the functions OF THEIR OWN CONTROLLER? When will someone actually confront them about their shady business practices?
Fantastic work guys! I know it was a pain to put together, but I think I can speak for everyone, when I say, you guys always put 110% effort into your videos and subjects. Again, great work!
9:08 - I think the Genesis 3-button controller is really underrated when it comes to its versatility. Honestly, it's so easy to hit A + B or B + C simultaneously because of the button spacing that it's almost like having two extra buttons on the controller. When you look at how Mortal Kombat 3 (and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) handled its controls on the 3-button controller, it becomes pretty evident that the only games that really have to suffer on the 3-button controllers are games with Street Fighter-style controls. In hindsight, it would've been nice to have Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II with HP and HP mapped to A + B and B + C respectively, as Genesis owners wouldn't have had to miss out on crouching low punches or pausing the games.
An 8bitdo gbros adapter allows you to use NES/SNES classic controllers with switch and remap the dpad to an analog stick. It worked really well for Link's Awakening! + it acts like a pro controller so you can remap
I wish the Switch allowed for custom button mapping with these Classic controllers, it seems like a real missed opportunity to properly utilize them for other games.
Every UA-camr would’ve done 10 minutes, 20 tops. You take two-thirds of Zack Snyder’s Justice League to test these four controllers. Absolute madlads. Don’t ever change.
Don't forget AM2 finally added a gamma adjust option to Virtua Racing on the Switch. You can fix the inexplicably light and washed out image to match the arcade version (pretty much) :) Not sure why that was even a thing
Man this must have been an insane amount of work. You also showed quite a few games I didn't even know existed on the Switch that I now want to check out.

The 8bitdo Sega Genesis 2.4ghz controller is my go-to for Sega stuff. It has the 6 button layout, AND can be remapped in the Switch's settings, unlike all of Nintendo's own retro controllers.
I highly recommend trying out a Wii Classic Controller (or Classic Controller Pro) - essentially it’s an SNES controlled but with two sticks to be used in a pinch, as well as a home button and more usable ZL and ZR buttons. I have an 8bitdo adapter to use it, and it’s my favorite way to play dpad focused games on the TV.
27:09 - that's how I play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on original hardware and I have no issues with that whatsoever. Even more comfortable than 2.x settings to me.
19:16 Heads-up: Devil Engine still isn’t safe to buy: The programmer, Sinoc, has siphoned all future money streams from game sales of Devil Engine even though him keeping the game on sale is in violation of Qwesta and Flatwood’s contracts for the art and music rights. This is illegal under US copyright law. I know this for sure because if things WEREN’T siphoned, Devil Engine Ignition would have released an entire year ago: as of now it sits in Sinoc’s hard drive stuck in copyright hell. And yes, that is the same Sinoc that investigated the Twitch leak. Small world, I know.

That was a ridiculous episode! Kudos guys for putting the time in and testing all these different games. I originally avoided these controllers, but after this video I may actually have to invest in a couple.
27:00 Quake 2 on N64 was my first FPS game, and that's how I controlled it. I used the left and middle grips, moved with D-pad, aimed with stick, A and B switched guns, jumped with L and shot with Z. It worked very well, and I could never wrap my head around Goldeneye's inferior controls. You're totally playing it in the Quake 2 N64 way, which is perfect.
Great video! Good to know a lot of these. In all honesty though if you want an SNES controller that's compatible with the most stuff get an 8bito SN30 pro, It is supported by literally every switch game I haven't had one that doesn't work with it yet. It also pairs natively to the Switch if you keep it up to date so you don't need a dongle or anything like that.
I really REALLY enjoy the flexibility of the Switch when it comes to controllers. Playing through Panzer Dragoon with a wireless Saturn controller.....unreal. Awesome video as always! Any chance you guys may do something for Genesis on the NSO? I feel a LOT of people don't understand why it's such a big deal as the only high quality Genesis re-release this gen due to not knowing how terrible the Genesis Classics Collection is, so much so that it never released in Japan. Playing Genesis on NSO with the 3-button controller is the best Genesis experience I've ever had outside of original hardware.
[Try4ce] I guess I can see that perspective. While we haven't tried it for ourselves since we don't have the expansion pack, the NES and SNES emulation on Switch is presented quite nicely. But just like many others, we're like, "do we need ANOTHER way to play Genesis games?" There are so many. But yeah I can imagine it being the best of what is currently easily purchasable. I doubt we'll do a video specifically on it though.
I originally thought this video would be pointless but since first clicking I have watched it 3 times and payed way too much for a N64 Switch online controller on ebay and also picked up an 8bitdo sn30 pro for 2d games covering all my bases! Great work guys this has become one of my favorite productions of yours!
I have lost count now, I keep coming back for one reason or another. I got the Genesis controller straight from Nintendo on the way now (that felt weird to say). It is so odd having a brand new N64 controller, I thought mine were in good condition but nope, this stick feels waaaaay better. I also retrofitted my old 8bitdo Sn30 with rubber pads and buttons from a super famicom controller I had no need for it feels good but I am still gonna be on the lookout for the official SNES from Nintendo with Zl and ZR buttons.
Man this is the greatest video I’ve seen in a while. The dedication and the effort can really be felt thru the screen, I can’t wait to watch to more from you guys!
Thanks for making this, gave me something to listen to at work. I didn't even notice how long the video was till you guys joked that the video had gone on for too long
I love the n64 controller, it's a 6 button snes controller with a analog attachment, it's just sad the n64 never programmed games in that way, but I appreciate I can take advantage of that with the switch, d pad movement with the left hand and right hand on the stick is amazing for so many game
While these controllers have limited functionality in other games; at least they work somewhat with they games you would play with outside the NSO service AND AT least you keep it. Great video guys!
31:58 As a huge Puyo fan, I love seeing it get talked about at all in videos like this. I just wanna see you guys talk about the Puyo Puyo series more extensively one day.
[Try4ce] As you can tell from the B-roll, I got a little addicted to collecting miscellaneous Puyo games because they're so danged cheap... it's fascinating how many there are...
@@mylifeingaming Yeah, it's insane. Even knowing that there's more official ports of Puyo 1 and 2 (separately, it's more than 20 each) than Doom 1 makes it even more nuts.
I did find a workaround to remap those online controllers. Connect them to a Mayflash Magic-NS adapter and they'll be read as standard Switch pro controllers.
This video was epic, can’t say enough how awesome it was for you guys to put this together! Thanks so much! 🤘🏼 Separate question, do you guys feel the input lag/latency on the NSO controllers is similar to joycons? Any thoughts on latency/lag would be appreciated! 🍻
After some videos I often think of what trickery did Nintendo with the old analogue sticks. Came to a similar situation when comparing my original GameCube controller and a new aftermarket controller.
Watching this video a bit late as I missed it on release, but lol your Tropical Freeze comments really resonated with me. I so want to love the modern ones but the feeling just isn't the same. People I've said that to think I'm crazy but glad to hear someone else feels the way I do about them. Great video with tons of info, and I appreciated hearing both of your thoughts on some of these titles as many I had not heard of till now. Thanks for the effort on this one and have a great new year!
I want these just to have them, they look wonderful and are a neat gimmick. But the retrobit Saturn controller is my go-to for retro games and it works with my retro pie as well. You don’t need remapping because it lets you hold buttons to swap the d-pad with analogue stick inputs and swap the confirm/cancel buttons. I think they almost perfectly replicated the feel enough for me. The MD 8bitdo are alright too
I went through the minigames when Superstars came out and found the ones that will give you trouble with the N64 Controller. Y'all already mentioned Dungeon Duos, but here are the others: Snow Whirled: 4-Player game that has you hit A/B/X/Y to spin your snowboard. Can only get a 180° spin on N64. Hide and Sneak: 1v3 game that has 3 players hiding behind scenery and the other trying to find them. If you are on the 3 player team, you can only pick 2/4 hiding spots. Ice Hockey: 2v2 game that has players scoring goals in a tiny hockey rink. Perfectly playable, but you lack the normal shot. Even if you pick N64 only, you've still got the potential for Hide and Sneak to pop up!
37:00 I never would've expected to see a Toki remake! Especially because that was one of my favourite games on the Atari Lynx...and who even played that un-ironically?!
35:14 I actually found that Celeste works phenomenally with the N64 controller. Because it's one of the few games out there that allows you to rebind the right analog stick. And map multiple inputs onto one button. Meaning you can map the C-Buttons to make Madeline dash in the corresponding C-button that you press.
I can't believe you guys makes me watching a 2-hour video about Nintendo Switch controllers. I don't even have a Nintendo Switch! (PS: You forgot to test and mention Horizon Chase Turbo, an awesome loveletter to old style racing games such as Top Gear and OutRun, made by the brazilians of Aquiris Studios)
I really enjoy using the n64 pad in lieu of the NES pad as it has A and B both big and easy to reach. For some reason that n64 D-pad feels better to me than the other Nintendo controllers.
Imagine we get one of these based on the Saturn pad. How many of the games Corey showed would work wonderfully. It is by far my favorite to play schmups, I never thought about it but it might be related to the disc based dpad. And this wasn’t crazy enough. I would have watched an even longer video. Finally I had the luck to thought about the DKC TF as a new game. Because to me the sound design of the originals was an integral part of them. The satisfying “krong” when jumping over them is something I still miss.
Great stuff. My only feedback would be that you maybe talked about the 6 button Sega pad a bit too much, given that it’s not readily available in the West. Other than that, great video as always! Edit: Try is so wrong about the Retro DKC games. Still love you though Try!
I should add for Sonic games, that the only 3D sonic that work here is Sonic Forces with a SNES pad, although 6 button MD could work though you can't do the Wispon attack for the avatar. While Sonic Colors Ultimate would only work with a N64 controller due to requiring an analog stick.
Thanks for making this video! I'm always looking for more games to play with my retro-bit 6 button sega controllers (they also have an L and R button and home/start/select) but I'll also take a few tips from this to play some SNES controller games. Another tip: today Klonoa Phantasy Reverie series was released and it also works with a Sega 6 button or a SNES controller :) you can set the controls yourself.
1:24:21 I just wanna say the nuance shots that you talk about that are mapped on X can be performed by pressing B->A (Drop Shot) or A->B (The big arc shot)

The amount of work that went into this episode is unreal.
Man this is the greatest video I’ve seen in a while. The dedication and the effort can really be felt thru the screen, I can’t wait to watch to more from you guys!
2 hours! You guys truly spoil us. Thanks for putting together such a comprehensive and beautifully crafted video 🙏
Thanks for making this, gave me something to listen to at work. I didn't even notice how long the video was till you guys joked that the video had gone on for too long
2 hours of MLiG? Now we're talking!
I love the n64 controller, it's a 6 button snes controller with a analog attachment, it's just sad the n64 never programmed games in that way, but I appreciate I can take advantage of that with the switch, d pad movement with the left hand and right hand on the stick is amazing for so many game
Imagine if capcom did the SFII collection on N64 back in the day. Perfect conversion with no loading and a great 6 button pad!
@@telemaster you're making their bad decisions hurt even worse 😂 dude Alpha 3 or Darkstalkers on the N64
Awesome video guys, I'm really glad you made it and look forward to more great content.
Separate question, do you guys feel the input lag/latency on the NSO controllers is similar to joycons? Any thoughts on latency/lag would be appreciated! 🍻
This has to be the best channel on UA-cam for gaming. You guys are nuts.
Ty guys, really loved this video. Any chance you can hook it into a PC and do a video?
After some videos I often think of what trickery did Nintendo with the old analogue sticks.
Came to a similar situation when comparing my original GameCube controller and a new aftermarket controller.
This video feels tailor made to me, a controller and retro nerd. Thank you so much!
this must've taken a long time thank you for trying to help everyone with this
Watching this video a bit late as I missed it on release, but lol your Tropical Freeze comments really resonated with me.
If you use the 8Bitdo USB adapter, you CAN remap buttons, although I've only tested this with the SNES Pad
You mean a SNES controller can be recognized as a Pro Controller?
I want these just to have them, they look wonderful and are a neat gimmick. But the retrobit Saturn controller is my go-to for retro games and it works with my retro pie as well. You don’t need remapping because it lets you hold buttons to swap the d-pad with analogue stick inputs and swap the confirm/cancel buttons. I think they almost perfectly replicated the feel enough for me. The MD 8bitdo are alright too
I went through the minigames when Superstars came out and found the ones that will give you trouble with the N64 Controller. Y'all already mentioned Dungeon Duos, but here are the others:
Snow Whirled: 4-Player game that has you hit A/B/X/Y to spin your snowboard.
Oh geez 2 hours.. I need a bigger tub of popcorn for this one
I love the amount of earnest time and effort that has been put into a video as eccentric and niche as this is.
I love you guys. Two hours of pure gaming bliss.
Still waiting on that first party controllers part 3 video, but this does in a pinch
Wonderful indepth review/ opinions and THE SHELTIE IS ADORABLE!
[Try4ce] That's a really cool idea! Kinda like Mischief Makers but probably a lot more fluid in motion.
1:32:15 you’re crazy the 8bitdo is the answer to all of these questions but I understand not the point of this vid. Great one nonetheless.
2 hour My Life In Gaming video? just hook it into my veins!
Spectacular, really awesome job!
I feel like I could down thrust all day long too. Nice video as always!
You guys are awesome! Keep up the great work!
Awesome tests!
I'll save this video as retro game wishlist
I really enjoy using the n64 pad in lieu of the NES pad as it has A and B both big and easy to reach. For some reason that n64 D-pad feels better to me than the other Nintendo controllers.
That dpad is most unloved especially given Nintendo tried to patent the cross design
I've let this video play through about ten times now...I just let it run, go do grocery shopping and it's still going when I get home! 😆
Glad to see wayforward's other games getting some form of spotlight outside of shantae.
It's hard to believe that this is on UA-cam. This is a Feature Film in itself. Wow.
Thanks for making this video! I'm always looking for more games to play with my retro-bit 6 button sega controllers (they also have an L and R button and home/start/select) but I'll also take a few tips from this to play some SNES controller games. Another tip: today Klonoa Phantasy Reverie series was released and it also works with a Sega 6 button or a SNES controller :) you can set the controls yourself.
another great vid as usual, very pleasantly surprised by the 2 hour runtime
1:24:21 I just wanna say the nuance shots that you talk about that are mapped on X can be performed by pressing B->A (Drop Shot) or A->B (The big arc shot)
