I was also introduced to The Mitford books by my mom. I have her copies of the books now, up through Light From Heaven, which came out the year she passed away. I read most of them and loved them, but have been thinking for awhile now of rereading them and continuing on. I think I'll try the audiobooks this time around. This was a wonderful video. Thank you. :)
Thank you so much! I hope you will continue on with the series. The audio books are great! I think my sister kept our mom's Mitford books. At the time I wasn't collecting them and had read them all on audio. I started acquiring them a few years ago when I was coordinating the book sales at our library and I noticed a few hard cover copies coming through the donations and decided to acquire a set. Lately though, my family has bought me new copies of the more recent books.
This was sooo helpful! I was feeling slightly overwhelmed trying to figure out the order of her books. I didn't know she wrote Miss Phanies Hats. I loved that book growing up. I would check it out of our church library all the time.
Hi, Elizabeth. A very nice review of Jan Karon. Yesterday, I added a fourth WORKING LIST on the Stack the Series page of Goodreads, and just copied in your Jan Karon list to that. Thanks so much for doing this video.
@@lizziefayelovesbooks I always overdo everything. I just could not ignore all of the series I realized I started. This way I can move between all the lists to select books for other challenges, like Middle Grade, Mystery Madness, Amish reads this year. My OCD!
I watched Jan Karon talk for the Buechner Institute on UA-cam. She has such a great sense of humor, and she quoted Agatha Christie and others. Looking at my library for her books and will be making a visit to my neighborhood used bookstore for the first few. The best.
That's great Donna! I don't know if I've seen that particular video, but I have watched several. She is so down to earth and yet so elegant. I hope you can find the books easily and that you enjoy them. I'm going to reread them all one of these days.
Loved this video. I first stumbled across At Home in Mitford back in January 1997 and am a fan of the whole series. Well, except for the kid's books, I'm not sure if I've read them or not. Cooking through the whole cookbook sounds like a fun challenge. This past Christmas I finally made the Orange Marmalade cake and it was a hit. :-)
Thank you so much! The marmalade cake sounds so good. I haven't tried making one yet, but would love to. Do you have the cookbook? There are so many wonderful sounding recipes in there.
@@lizziefayelovesbooks I've only tried a couple others so need to try more of them. Thanks for pointing out Father Tim's breakfast casserole, I hadn't noticed it, but I lost my Xmas morning casserole when we moved several years ago and need a new one. I'll be sure to try it next December. BTW, I sent you a message on Goodreads about a Mitford read along group you might like. 😉
I loved your enthusiasm and the details that went into this video. You are extremely knowledgeable in your favourite author and that’s what makes you stand out from many others. 💕. I bet a lot of people will pick up this series because of this. I however will not as it just isn’t my genre. But I watched the whole video and hope you do more videos on authors and book series you collect.
Thanks so much Melinda! You are always such a great cheerleader. I do have a few other authors in mind to focus on, but have a few books to read or reread before I can be completely prepared. What genres are your favorites and who are some of your favorite authors?
LizziefayeLovesBooks It will be easier to say what genres I do not read. I can’t read science fiction unless contemporary dystopian. Adult high fantasy except Games of Thrones series and hubby has talked me into reading Lord of the Rings. And I’m truly sorry but I do not read Christian Fiction. Everything else is pretty much on the table. In 2018 I fell in love with Nora Roberts’ books and her pen named books series “In Death”. Mystery, cozy mystery and romance of my go to genres. Especially paranormal romances. I’m getting back into historical romance/fiction which was all I read back in the 80’s and 90’s. I started following you because of your cozy mystery love and watched a huge collection you had. But since I’ll watch anything you put out because of your eclectic reads.
@@scrapbooksandreads Oh I love Lord of the Rings so much. I hope you enjoy those. Don't apologize about not reading Christian Fiction. Everyone should read what they enjoy. Although I should add that Jan Karon's books are not your typical Christian fiction. I plan to read more cozy mysteries this year. I have collected so many awesome series that I need to put a dent in. You mentioned historical fiction from 80s and 90s. Have you ever read The Thornbirds? Someone else was talking about it recently and it's been on my radar.
LizziefayeLovesBooks first the reason I haven’t read LotR. I’ve seen the movies so many times I can recite the script. I do not watch what I read or read what I watch. Oh and the Thorn Birds, one of my favourites from back then. I just found a copy of the first book in a favourite series of mine from back then, The McCloud Sisters by Aola Vandergriff and want to reread to see is it’s as good as it was 40 years ago. I wish I hadn’t gotten rid of all my pocket books from back then but raising the boys took up a lot of real estate in the house. At any given time one or both had 2 friends over and most weekends there were 6 boys living here. We were the hang out house. I’m glad you are reading more cozy this year. Are you stacking them?
@@scrapbooksandreads My 20by20 challenge is a big overall stacked challenge that includes everything I'm reading, so I hadn't thought about doing a stack for just cozies. But let me think about that. I just might.
I don't think there is another series with quite the same mix of characters, setting, faith, heart, and humor that Mitford has, but my second favorite series is Miss Julia by Ann B. Ross. It doesn't have quite the same faith element, but I love the characters and every book is funny and delightful! They should definitely be ready in publication order. The Christmas Hope series by Donna VanLiere is excellent and the books by Effie Leland Wilder are a delight! Thanks for asking! I love recommending books!
Scribd doesn’t have the first book. If I decide to seek it out I’ll go to the library. I’m a little disappointed in Scribd. I had two books saved that disappeared off the site, and one of them I had already started listening to! Anyway, your passion for this series really shines through, but it’s so long, and I’m more of an historical fiction reader. I’m sure you’ll have some people wanting to read it now.
I was able to get them all at my library on CD, but I just searched around a little and found most of them on AudioBooks.com. They have two versions of At Home in Mitford. They have the abridged version that is 3 hours and the full version which is 19 hours. Both are narrated by Jan Karon. She is really great. I listened to her abridged version initially and was hooked. I eventually went back and listened to the full version, but I had the John McDonough version (who is also great). I don't know all of the terms of AudioBooks.com, but they are a subscription service similar to Audible. You can get a one month trial and listen to At Home in Mitford that way. And then you might decided to keep it awhile if you get hooked like I did. Of course they are all on Audible too

I'm reading At Home in Mitford and enjoying it. Aloha
Oh that is wonderful!! It's one of my favorite books of all time!
This is my favorite series as well. Thank you for reviewing and offering your take on the order in which to read these.
I think that it's corrected now on Goodreads, but for awhile they had Mitford and Father Tim listed as separate series. It made it very confusing.
Jan Karon has become one of my very favorite authors! Thanks for your thoughtful review of this series.
Yay! Are you still reading the series or have you finished it?
