Illia Malinin must be a contender for ESPN's sports performance and athlete of the year. His performance at the World Championships 2024 has never been done in the history of the sport. Illia Malinin, in 4 minutes, revolutionized skating. ESPN is filled with a bunch of straight men who will look right past the sequins and give awards to athletes in football, basketball, and baseball. For ESPN to deny Illia Malinin recognition will be an affront to the sport of ice skating and demean the athletic genius it took to pull off this performance.

Not an expert but as far as I know an axel is a jump that begins with a forward takeoff (all jump land backwards). It is the most difficult of all the jumps because of an extra half rotation. So when you say quad axel, a skater will have to rotate 4 and 1/2 mid-air which many physicists even consider an impossible feat.
Zadivljujuće! Kad gledaš njegovo klizanje izgleda da ti skokovi nisu nikakav napor. On klizanje podiže na viši nivo, unosi pozitivne promene i vraća ga običnim ljudima, posebno mladima🍀❤️🇷🇸
Ilia may have been the first land a quad Axel in competition but they have been landed before and if I’m not mistaken Yuzuru Hanyu might have landed a quad Axel in comp before
Hanyu never landed in competition or even in practice, he said so himself, he attempted but did not land it. There was one other skater that attempted it in competition but Ilia is the only one that has landed it.
@@MsElke11 the axel is only jump that takes off forward and lands backwards, adding an extra half rotation so technically the quad axel is 4 1/2 revolutions. It is the most difficult jump ever attempted. Most skaters struggle doing a triple axel. Doing a quad axle is an insane feat and Ilia hits it all the time. In the history of the sport, only 2 other skaters have even attempted it.

It's less impressive once you find out how much damage quad jumps do to their body. It's why you don't see women attempting it after a certain age and why most singles skaters retire in their 20s from wear and tear.
@@ppnexus2000 more impressive that they're shortening their career? Skaters feel 8 times their bodyweight when they land. There's a reason why Yuzuru Hanyu lasted as long as he did in competition. He had balance to his programs. Whereas a lot of skaters lately focus primarily on jumps like quads because that's what gets big scores. The ISU doesn't care if the athlete is actively damaging their body every time they do those jumps because another skater can take their place. Take Nathan Chen for example, during the recent winter Olympics he did like 8 quads in one program. Did it win him the gold, yeah. Do I see him competition again after finishing college, honestly no. @@Future.Corpse You know nothing about figure skating. The fact that skaters have to push their body to do these jumps just to place because the ISU doesn't care for artistry anymore isn't impressive, it's disturbing.
Even normal quads are close to impossible for women after puberty. It's too hard on their lower back and muscle/bones aren't dense enough once their weight increase
