I Secret Shopped a Local COIN SHOP

I can only dream of somebody opening a local coin shop closer than a whole day's travel to where I live. I am envious of all of you out there that don't have to source all of their metals on line.
Its not that glamorous😂
not all coin shops are great..they all have their things they want so you have to figure out how they work ...helps to get to know them
And really, it's not difficult to do business with the bullion mega-dealers online. You get very good prices when you sell stuff to them or buy stuff from them. Still, I do try to support my local coin shops wherever possible.
I'm the same, so many times shops have closed and I can't fine a good shop. here in NJ
going to the coin shows is a good place to get deals
Hope to see more 'Secret Shopper' videos! It's very helpful for fairly new stackers to hear what others are paying for their silver...and to see that asking for a better deal is really ok!! Thank you for the great video!
Kids being on their phone can't possibly be the answer for everything. First of all, this shop is only open from 10am-3pm, closes at 1:30pm on Saturdays and not open on Sunday. If the kids are in school, when can they discover the shop?
They also have no online presence. If the kids are online all of the time and they want to reach them, they need to be online.
Maybe they can hire a young person to clean the store?
Nice roll of Benjis!
I really enjoyed this video, it's nice to see full sticker price and a shop willing to work with you. Some people don't even know to make bundle deals when buying things.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching my friend!!!
You could theoretically use that buffalo as a pizza cutter
actually I put a junk silver dollar in the bottom of my Brita Water Pitcher. This would work great for that because of the surface area.
Love the fact that you share your purchase with prices
Interesting. I was traveling last week and stopped by an antique shop in Davenport that also sold coins and bullion. Wonderful gentleman running the store. Picked up a couple of vintage rounds for $28 each plus an 1847 2 dram apothecaries weight.
I think you're right about numismatics dying off. When I go to the coin shows there's a stamp collecting area. I call 'em "The Ancients" and nobody sitting there with magnifying glasses and tweezers is under 70 years old.
I just gave my daughter my chess stamp collection hoping in 40 years she may get my money back, 8-) If I had only used this money to purchase a dividend paying stock instead.
Welcome to Dubuque I have lived here for almost 50 years there are 2 other shops in town I go to all 3. And 2 pawnshops that also sell silver and gold. Al capone used to stay at one of the hotels downtown. Anyway spot on review I do like the shop also.
A nice roll of Benjamin's and first time I have seen the thin buffalo with design on one side. Am glad you had some good results.
Those Benjamin coins are very nice! Hope to see more of these types of undercover coin shop videos 👍
that "giant" 1 oz buffalo, definitely highlights one of silvers features; reflectivity
True that!
I was thinking that was a 10 oz round at first.
I haven't seen one of those huge buffaloes in a long time. It sounds like you generally had a really good experience there. I'm glad you went and I hope someone lives close enough to that shop to give them some business!
Yup. My parents got out of antiques in about 2002. They've since passed and I sold off two storge units of their remainder stock. Pottery and marked dishes market is a mere shadow of its former self. The antique market was HOT in the 90's.
I drive for a living and I have been to this LCS back in 2020 or 2021. They were very nice friendly people. Mostly older guys from what I remember.
Nice Benjis. The buffalo rounds are neat too.
1:00 nice that makes the antique coins cheaper for me!
Those giant silver Buffs were interesting because it made me wonder if anyone was producing a 10-oz. version
of these. I did a quick search online but did not find any references to a 10-oz. silver buffalo round. I'm not a
fan of the buffalo design but a 10-oz, version would be pretty nice.
There are 5oz Buffalo rds.
Plz keep the secret shopper videos going you earned a sub.👍
I've been at that coin shop. It has some cool antiques.
Very nice Benjamins in excellent condition. My favorite constitutional coin. The giant buffalos are cool.
A coin shop should be judged on attitude as much as price. By that I mean honest, fair pricing with some give and take. I wish I had a coin shop like that near me!
Thanks for yur positive and realistic evaluation.
That bu roll of 58 Franklins was a great buy at that price. On eBay It ranges from 300 to 450
Dubuque Coin & Antique is a legend in Eastern Iowa!
It's a great shop!
I’ve been into antiques since I was a kid (I credit my grandmother for this). Where I live, I actually see a lot of Gen Z people at the thrift stores and antique shops; and they are all fascinated by the contents of said shops. It’s refreshing, honestly. I don’t know what constitutes “young” in the shop owner’s eyes; but if considers “young” to be under 40, then I can assure him that if I am on my phone a lot it is because I am looking up antiques. Also, shows like American Pickers are wildly popular, as is the thrifting and reselling game. Maybe the Dubuque youth are just unhip (get off my lawn and into an antique shop-damn kids). And I give the shop an A+ for the dog alone. 😊
Iowa! Great video. Thanks for sharing 👍
Antiques: my great grandfather owned a furniture manufacturing facility in the 1880’s. Yes, I am very old. I have my great grandmothers entire boudoir set. Chairs, chests, mirror, everything. They are all in our master bedroom and look appropriate and fantastic. I restored them all and reupholstered them many years ago. My grown children have absolutely no interest in these rare family heirlooms. My dad was a test pilot. I have steamer trunks of stuff chronicling the testing of the early jet bombers and a ton of stuff from the Mercury and Apollo programs. These guys were all family friends and we saw them often at Edwards and Dayton. I even have envelopes that went to the moon. No one is interested. I only have a few years to decide what to do with all the stuff. I may just put it all in one big box and send it to the Smithsonian. Let them figure out what to do with it.
It makes me sad to hear this. If only people had more respect for the past
Whoa, Dubuque getting near me!
Another Great one!
Nice. I don’t regret anything I’ve bought from local coin shops. They’re fair and they have to keep their business going.
Thanks for sharing with us! I enjoyed the video!
The story is Ted Binion is a very interesting one. He was a Casino executive at his fathers casino in Las Vegas, amassed a stack of 46,000 pounds of silver, and was eventually murdered for his riches by his girlfriend and another guy who were tried and convicted but later granted a new trial and acquitted. There's a dateline episode about it. Highly recommended.
Isn't it? I covered it a while ago but nowhere near as good as Dateline and it was early in my youtube channel... my vids were even worse then than they are now! Lol
@@SilverSeekerI'm sure it's fine man I'll check it out. Always enjoy your videos.
10k lbs was given to the 2nd judge
@@georgeallen7667 🤣😆
Those giant Buffaloes are GORGEOUS! Happily pay a few quid extra just to have one. Dublin Ireland here.
Please more secret shop videos. Thank u.
Great deal for you on that roll, super nice.
Hah! that Buffalo coaster is nuts.
Always love your videos, I’ve been collecting since I was 8, I’m now 21. Love your knowledge of this stuff
Sweet pickups especially the roll of 1958 d franklins!
Thanks for the heads up on a good coin shop. I'm in eastern Iowa semi regularly, so maybe I can stop and see them.
Closest thing we have had to a coin roll hunt in a long time nice score great video
You got the coolest content, Dawg!!
We spend weekends in Dubuque a couple times a year and I enjoy shopping at this place. I agree they are great guys and have always felt they are giving good deals. Was nice to see a place I have visited shown
very informative, and those big buffalo are awesome.
I absolutely agree with the Grade you Gave!
Keep the Dog stuff behind the Counter.
Good Video (A-) 😂
Just kidding.
Nice job SS!!!
Thanks for the video.
Great haggling. I'm always interested in a deal just like this. You pay up in the front but make up for it in the end. Always barter. Always.
Sweet video.
Finally someone who knows how to handle coins with out adding more abrasions.Nice FRANKLIN'S.
Dubuque? That’s awesome. I’m an Iowa guy myself! Will have to check out that shop sometime!
Cool video Seeker. 👋🐸
Those Binion slabs do well at auction, and that's why I don't have one. They go for a bit more than I want to pay, which is good if you're a seller. You could flip those dollars and come out OK.
if you are in a shop where the guard dog loves you-that's a + shop-we don't all live in fancy cities
It isn't a guard dog
Great video and pick ups.
Awesome Franklin's.
Liking the Binion coins, I think you did decent on the price. I've been watching em for a while now and that's reasonable
Wow! You came to my hometown!!!
For me the saddest part of this visit is that he bought stuff one day and then came back the next day for a second purchase yet the receipts were numerical meaning they didn’t have any other sales between his visits…
No I went back like 45 minutes later not the next day
Nice coaster.
"Let me just get this Silver Eagle out of the way ..," and the ting after actually tossing it to the side... Hilarious!
That’s a smart haul!
Hey are you coming to the KC coin show in April?
I have one in my town. They charge spot plus $4 for generic second hand rounds. Plus $85 on gold
Those are some beautiful Benjis!
Wow I have one of those one ounce buffalos also in the plastic just like you. Bought it early in my stacking journey last year. Never have opened tho...
I'm down in Cedar Rapids!
Those big buffalos are hilarious ahahaha, I’ve seen big buffalos a few times but they’re always 5 or 10 ounces not 1 ahaha
Antiques, stamps, old coins, baseball cards, and comic books all going out.... What keeps coins alive is simply the precious metals, not the history. The precious metals side of coins will remain popular and keep coin shops in business.
great video!
Coin shop that deals, hell yes! With Coin shops, local game stores, comic bookstores, I am always a little wary of super clean shops. They all need to be a just little messy because they care more about the product, than how the store looks.
Thanks for reminding me that you can always ask for deals.
Them are very very nice Benji's.
WOW 😳,🤠✌️
Looks like you made out well. You have to make allowances for any LCS because they just do not and cannot have the economies of scale that on-line dealers can achieve, and so they need to be a dollar or two higher than a lot of on-line dealers to make any money and still be competitive.
Where is located that shop; I am interested in my personal collection. I've never changed my coins in 25 years, so I got a good collection.
Ive got an NGC graded MS62 1884 O Morgan dollar from the binion hoard. Looking forwafx to seeing your binion video.
I have 4 great big coin coasters for drinks. Large Lincoln Wheatie large Washington quarter, large Franklin half dollar, and a large Morgan Dollar but they're made out of aluminum but still kinda cool I think.
The word I see I'm nervous of, is proof.
So true about this new generation!
If you ever go back take some doggy treats for Millie. I have about half-dozen coin shops within an hour drive and as many gold & silver shops that sell bullion. I also have an auction house that has one or two auctions a year, unfortunately since Covid the auctions are online only and bidding starts at $20 on all items. You can't go in to preview the entire listings, you can ask to see a few items but not the entire lot. Descriptions are vague.
I hear a lot about different hoards of silver dollars. What are some good hoards to get silver dollars from and what classifies a collection to be a hoard?
That’s so true I try all the time to get my stepdaughter to like antique and stuff and nope just phone it makes me mad
Man. Come to Kansas. I want to see you review a Kansas coin shop
Never hurts to ask for a deal ... my LCS gives me deals because I have made friends with him ...
Let's gooo. Love your content
I’d keep those nice benjis, they look really nice! I went through a faze where I favored the keneddys(because those were the most popular and I only knew about them), then I started getting walkers then barbers now i like the franks! I bought 2 or 3 bu ones on whatnot a while ago for about 22 bucks and that seemed like so much to me because I was used to buying regular ones for 10 bucks.
The large 1 oz Silver Buffalo would have been really nice if they were kilo rounds instead.
👍
Very cool buffalo
Greysheet shows 290 for the Bengy roll but a couple month old sheet.
Can you show ous the coins in the frame on your walls plz
I’m a younger stacker and love history I just hate getting over charged on my silver. Kinda pointless if ur paying to much and dealers around me always want top doller
Buffalo rounds are huge and beautiful. I would have turned around to.😂
I have been there. Glad you avoided the other ones in town, they are rip offs.
He's right about Antiques....dead for decades.
Dead for so long that it probably doesn't have anything to do with "kids these days and their phones".
i paid 50 and 63 each for 2 binions back in 2010 these were not graded either one was xf one was vf ,if they had a grade attached and the binion holder there is a decent premium , for ms and up smaller on the circulated grades but its stillthere that was 2010
You should take a look at Tim's shop and grade the tidiness.
Tim's a bit far from me lol
😂😂😂
@@SilverSeeker .😄
Seven dollars over spot for Buffalo rounds that’s normal in Canada
@Silver Seeker great video
I traded one of those giant buffalo's back in 2019 for a pristine (just out of a bank roll) River of No Return W quarter. Not a scratch or mark on it. Best trade I've ever made!
ebay is not a good metric of pricing since they take a cut everything is higher.
those thin 1oz silver buffalo rounds are pretty neat for the novelty...and the 1958 Franklins do look nice
good video :)
