    Lang Lang shares his thoughts on Badarzewska-Baranowska’s “The Maiden's Prayer”. He interprets this work on his new album “Piano Book” and describes his approach to the interpretation. With his new album “Piano Book”, Lang Lang goes back to his first love - to the pieces that made him want to become a musician in the first place; a reflection on the music that influenced him most during his early childhood.

    My father and my grandmother used to play this piece. They both were excellent piano players. If ever you come across the piece Edelweiss by g. Lange, i think op 31, please please play it. And put all your sentiments into it. I love that piece which was perfectly played by my grandmother. They all passed away and these beautiful pieces remind me of my childhood. My parents were poor but the first thing they did after ww2 they saved all their money and bought a used piano. And we used to live in small rooms since my parents were refugees and had lost everything during the flicht from bessarabia, today ukraine , but no matter how bad we were off we had a piano and could listen to that wonderful music.

    Hello! Great information to know this is the most popular piece of music in Asia for youngsters - it's a super beautiful melody as you say :-) Great upload! Ian

    It's super well known in Taiwan... Because it's more commonly known as the melody garbage trucks play when it's time to take out the trash

    I understand that someone named John Stowell Adams wrote lyrics to this music. But I cannot find them. Do I have the wrong lyrics writer? Are there any lyrics? I am NOT searching for the American Bluegrass version of A Maiden's Prayer. Your help is greatly appreciated. I am a daydreamer and can imagine a story to go with this music, but I would rather know the real story...if there is one. I know sometimes music can seemingly come from no where. Anyway, I haven't found any historical reference as to what motivated this music. Thanks.

      I have the 1900 sheet music version, no lyrics.

      However, the interwebs furnishes me with lyrics written by John Stowell Adams around 1860 for this piece at www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/songster/30-the-maidens-prayer.htm They are:
      Each hour of life to thee I turn,
      Toward thee my inmost soul doth yearn;
      Both day and night, where'er I be.
      My trusting heart still turns to thee.
      Hopeful, I pray that I may keep
      My love as now, serene and deep.
      May the pure feeling, upward now stealing,
      Ever strengthen'd 'twixt me and thee.
      Each hour of the to thee I turn,
      Toward thee my inmost soul doth yearn;
      Both day and night, where'er I be,
      My trusting heart slid turns to thee.

    Why is this [still] so popular? I never understood the appeal of this piece. It stays in E Flat Major the whole time, has no variations of significance, and the tune is not that memorable! Kudos to Lang Lang for playing the heck out of a piece with such little artistic significance.

      Indeed! The piece gets the treatment it deserves in Act 2 of Weill's "Mahagonny".
