If you still need to check out our video from last week showcasing the foot and ankle anatomy using our iPad app, I highly recommend it. It delves into the intricate details surrounding foot anatomy, shedding light on injuries beyond plantar fasciitis.
Plantar fasciitis is a prevalent condition among adults, manifesting as chronic heel pain. It involves inflammation of the thick band connecting the heel bone (calcaneus) to the toes, forming the arch, typically resulting in stabbing pain, often experienced in the morning.
However, heel pain can stem from various other conditions in this area. Baxter's nerve entrapment, for instance, occurs when the lateral plantar nerve is pinched, causing numbness and tingling on the inner heel. Similarly, tarsal tunnel syndrome, akin to carpal tunnel syndrome for the hand, affects the foot and ankle's passageway for tendons, nerves, and vessels, potentially leading to altered sensation and motor function.
Muscular involvement is also common, particularly with the tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, and flexor hallucis longus tendons, which traverse around the medial malleolus and attach throughout the bottom of the foot.
Additional prevalent injuries include sesamoiditis, where inflammation of small bones under the big toe joint can cause discomfort and altered gait, and metatarsalgia, affecting the bones connecting the midfoot to the toes, often prone to stress fractures. Nerve irritation, or neuritis, between the toes, especially with Morton's neuromas between the third and fourth toes, can be exacerbated by tight footwear or pressure.
Some other common examples are hammer toes, claw toes, Bunions, fat pad irritations, and typical ankle sprains. Those are all additional common injuries that go within the foot.
