Ben Horowitz On What Leaders Get Wrong About Corporate Culture
This is my first time seeing Insider's Office. It looks pretty clean and fresh.
casual day....that was a real game changer right there, really made the world a better place
It's cool that Ben can see , in a setting, and quickly deduce that there is some entrance requirement not being met. Incisive acumen
Databricks was a great bet.
All I understand is *_S t o n k s_*
Good talk.
Yeah this isn’t what I thought it was
Nice talk
Anyone here going to buy the book after watching the video?
Many people 👫
Good video!
Stop lying
Nice prediction on NFTs towards the end
he also is showing inadvertently how he is going to treat you once he has given you "his" money- its now his company and you better not use the bathroom- i wonder how many times he has kept others waiting or been late himself??? should the company seeking capital fire him ? i would think so
Whew chile! This was awkward.
This man just said....that a business meeting should be as important to a person as their wedding.
Mr Hororwitz has it all wrong. Fining people for being late to a meeting!? The only culture you get from that is one of distrust and fear. This is a back end thinking strategy, rather than a front end. Try and tackle why they are late in the first place? Too much work? Non effective use of time? boredom? lack of engagement?? Maybe that's a better place to start building a productive culture. Frugality is a business strategy, not a culture. A sure fire way of the fastest route to the bottom. Rule by fear, stack em high, sell it cheap, profit at all cost. Great 'culture'.
this guy has the same last name as andrew from tally hall????
But I had diarrhea!
@Ariella Kadosh I'll give it a try. 😁
He lost me at the word "culture". Only corporate word worse then that is "family". These are just BS words that translate to no work life balance, unrealistic demands and high turnover rates. The second you hear a company talking about their "culture" or how it's a "family"....RUN, don't walk. It's a massive red flag. If it's a good company with a good culture then they don't have to talk about their "culture" or other made up platitudes.... because it's a good company where people actually want to be and doesn't need to try and stop bleeding with pretend "culture" bandaids. Culture in business just means enforcing philosophical policies on top of actual policy. If your ACTUAL policies don't work....your company sucks and you have a terrible culture. Saying "culture" as a leader simply means people don't like you and don't want to work for you because you've entirely missed the mark as a leader to begin with....and that's a direct leadership issue, not a company wide cultural issue.
@Ariella Kadosh You're on the right track. Leadership inventing "culture" is just a representation of their own ego. It has nothing to do with the task at hand. You were hired to do a job. Either you can do it or not, either you enjoy it or not. If you can't or won't.... you're fired, pushed out or quit. Simple as that. Nobody gives a sh*t about some CEO's coked up ideas about culture he came up with at 3am because he's bored or because nobody likes him so it's an attempt to be "more relatable" when in fact it makes them less relatable. Because it's the epitome of someone having way too much free time. If you're inventing a philosophical "culture" it's because you're addressing problems or potential problems. Instead of being silly....just address the issues or problems head on instead of being separated from reality. Corporate "culture" inventions are nothing more than bored rich people in charge of a company who don't actually know anything about the company they are in charge of.
Google is facing this problem right now. Instead of just saying "Do your job" they let people run amok with all their personal beliefs....and now it's coming back to haunt them and they are just now trying to crack down on the "culture". You were hired to do a job. That's it. If because of the leadership culture, people think they were hired more to just do whatever instead of the actual job at hand....they are going to do "whatever". Because nobody really wants to work for a living ..... especially if they can get paid to complain all day and be just as self righteous as a guy who writes a book about company culture. That's sort of the underlying flaw. Likely 97% of Google employees just go to work, do their jobs and go home to friends and family. But there's a small percentage who apparently think they were hired to protest against all the injustices of the world. Not that they don't have a point....but that's not why they were hired to begin with. Which goes back to leadership and company culture and now they are paying that price for philosophical policy instead of literal policy. This guy releases a book about company culture.... meanwhile some companies are trying to get rid of it.
AGREED!!! So much bullshit.

15:57 ...please speak proper English...bothers me when I hear "port-O-fo-li-o" when the word, in English, is port-fo-li-o - 4 syllables, not 5, like in Spanish, Italian or Portuguese...its not an accent when you totally mispronounce a word by inserting letters that do not exist
chill.
