    Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com. This is the Belle Epoch Deluxe, from Catalinbread. The Belle Epoch Deluxe harnesses the sound and feel of an original Maestro Echoplex EP-3 by serving up a faithful, everything-but-the-tape reproduction of the stage and studio classic. The tape cartridge has been replaced by a 24-bit, high-fidelity delay line that is surrounded by a precision-engineered exact copy of the original EP-3 preamp. The analog JFET preamp is constructed from a handful of parts that were selected for tone and part value, and is powered via internal charge pump to an operating voltage of exactly 22 volts, the same as the original. All the original facets of the preamp were kept intact, including the mixer stage and the recording and playback amplifiers, resulting in the most faithful recreation on the market. The Belle Epoch Deluxe also makes the leap from effect pedal to performance tool by adding a versatile expression pedal system, letting you control the delay time, the playback head volume, rotary speed, or the resonant filter sweep hands-free. A separate footswitch gives you control over the pedal’s ability to self-oscillate, along with an internal control to tune the oscillation to your liking. Five additional delay programs transform the Belle Epoch Deluxe into different delay types, featuring rotary, filter and two types of Deluxe Memory Man-style repeats. And just like all Catalinbread pedals, the Belle Epoch Deluxe is lovingly crafted right here in Portland Oregon.

    I'm not sure why people are griping so much about the price- it's $25 more than an El Capistan, which is a mostly digital emulation of tape echo, whereas this is an exact recreation of the analog circuitry of an EP3 with a digital delay line. Apparently it takes an hour and a half just to put all the components on the board. The price is for parts and labour, which manifest in the best sounding delay pedal I've ever played.

    • @WTWASTHAT
      @WTWASTHAT 7 років тому +14

      Parts, labour, and (probably the most expensive part) development. People forget it takes more than just throwing the parts together to make a product, R&D is time consuming and expensive. They were working on this pedal for a long time, I remember them first talking about it a whiiiiiile back.

      6 years later and I miss Howard era Catalinbread. He is such a great combination of engineer and player with a great ear and eye for detail. Such amazing stuff we got over the years. I have re-housed a bunch of these BED's in to bigger enclosures with the big toe turners and an extra expression pedal socket instead of the switch.

    • @hoover728

      @@cgavin1 Howard is awesome, and releasing what appear to be great pedals as KittycasterFx. In fairness to the current gang at Catalinbread, I recently got a Dirty Little Secret Deluxe which builds upon Howard's design by moving the circuit into a BED enclosure and adding a real output transformer and an extra footswitch for boost. An incredibly versatile and rich sounding overdrive. Your rehoused BEDs sound cool!

    A lot of pedals get some hype, but then a year later there are lots going used on Reverb. I just checked. Not a single one of these is being sold used. I don't do not know how many people bought them, but they obviously are keepers. I generally do not use delay so often except for a bit of space in post, but I want one of these for the tone shaping as well.

    I have one, and it´s easily the best delay pedal I have ever played. I keep it always on. Yes, it costs some sweet monay, but as far as delay pedals go, I don´t think there really is anything that can compete with this. It is head and shoulders above other EP-3 emulations. I used to have a regular Belle Epoch, which was great too, but this is a different beast altogether.

    • @javiersobrino
      @javiersobrino 6 років тому +4

      That would be outside the concept of this pedal. It tries to emulate part by part the original EP-3 design. Furthermore I think the rotary knob is completely unnecessary. The expression pedal capabilities to change the delay time on the fly is probably its best addition, together with the echo oscillation switch.
      There is a myriad of pedal that already include the features you mention, precisely, another superb tape echo like the Strymon El Capistan offers what you want. This one is a different approach, and its design makes it perfect as an alternative to those units.
      All in this pedal is about vintage recreation, a time when the perfect delay timing was not a thing. I have one and I am happy beyond imaginable with it. Oscillating with the expression pedal is an amazing exercise!

    • @michael_caz_nyc

      I Agree 100%. Tap Tempo is so Important to me, as I am required to frequently play: R&B, and Dance Music and That - would make it: The Absolute Must Have Delay Pedal. It Sounds Fantastic though. Probably the closest thing to an EP-3 with obvious Improvements.

Based on cost to build, demand, and lusciousness, you definitely get what you pay for. I have the SA Nemesis for stereo rig, also excellent. I have the MXR CC for my minimalist set up. Also awesome. FYI: this pedal is NOISY. It was created to be EXTREMELY authentic and they did a BANG-UP job of it - but I think it was taken TOO far. Yeah, that old vintage equipment sounds great, but back when it was popular, that excess noise wasn't exactly a DESIRABLE thing, it was just a product of the technology of the time. We have better technology now, so take advantage of it. Just know, if you buy this, expect a certain amount of self-noise. If you're playing at full blast, you can't hear it very much. But as soon as you stop, or if you have quiet passages, expect you will be able to hear it. The preamp noise inherent in the original EP was duplicated for this pedal, and if you have an OD channel, or any guitar sound that has gain, this will be AMPLIFIED. I am selling mine. If I had known what I just typed here, I wouldn't have bought it. Both THIS pedal, and the Belle Epoch BOTH have this self-noise. Just FYI.

    The BED is a great pedal, but Catalinbread won't get a penny of my money.

      There's a whole history online that you can read about. Briefly, Catalinbread is trying to fuck the designer of the pedal--the guy who designed over half of Catalinbread's pedals and is the face and charisma of the company--Howard Gee.

      @@profd65 I already bought one of the first BED’s while Howard was there. Mama CB shot herself in the foot. She screwed Howard over and he took his genius with him. What have they produced that’s worthwhile since????

    A few years late with this one, and it's not even stereo, pass. How are you going to charge 320 USD in 2017 for a delay with relatively little features in this market?

    • @hoover728
      @hoover728 7 років тому +31

      I'd hardly say it say 'relatively little features'. It has the exact analog circuitry of an EP3, plus 5 other modes. It has expression control over very practical parameters, and an oscillation switch that can be fine-tuned At any rate, it's been selling out within minutes from their website and other dealers haven't been able to keep it in stock since it was released so obviously there are enough people who don't share your opinion.

      Most guitarists don't have stereo rigs. Relatively little features? Wtf are you smoking?

      David Babb relatively little compared to it's competitors. this thing is priced fairly steep, it's going against some pretty fancy gadgets. and a lot of them are cheaper than this thing.

      I mean, compared to like the Timeline, sure. But this is definitely a niche thing. I haven't heard another pedal that sounds this close to a real EP-3. For less than the price of two DD-7s you can get this. If you look at it that way it doesn't seem like much.

    Krank-O-Plex beats all on tone, and it's all about analog tone. Digital will never be able to match it.

      theonemodifier My two cents: digital is a better match for replicating tape echo. A properly set up tape echo has a wider freq range than any BBD. BBD are awesome in their own way but for tape sounds, are too dirty at slower times and have that inherent chirp and clock noise/aliasing.
