  • Praise, my soul, the King of heaven played on one of my favourite organs in London, UK along with lyrics on the screen.
This is the Lewis organ of Southwark Cathedral, and it's wonderful!
Hope you enjoy this hymn - one of the most requested hymns on BIS!

Thanks Richard, wonderful building and organ. I still remember the words of all verses from my time at school, 60years ago.

@mervwhitney7229 - Likewise for me, albeit only 50 years ago. I was delighted that this great hymn was sung at a funeral that I attended just yesterday. I wasn't aware that there were multiple versions of the music nowadays. The "John Goss version", with its more 'delicate' chords in the third verse, and rich climactic sound in the fifth, was the one that I grew up with.

Excellent. One of my late father's favourites. I have a memory that there's a great descant arrangement for the last verse? I used to sing in Southwark Cathedral with the Exultate Singers many years ago - good grief, must be 50 years ago when the organ was new (well, newer). And before that, under Malcolm McKelvey at boarding school in Sussex. He had an interesting technique of playing the penultimate line (or thereabouts) of a "big" hymn kind of an octave up, no pedals, then bring everything back at normal pitch for the big finish. Anyway, this was a good way to start the New Year here in Australia - good wishes for all in the UK when the New Year finally gets there!

I've loved Southwark Cathedral ever since I first saw it at the wedding of Cinderella and the Prince in 'The Slipper and the Rose' back in 1976. Such an inspiring building. But we didn't get to hear the organ then. This was majestic!

This was one of the first hymns I became acquainted with when visiting a UK church on holiday. It only became known to me by name through BiS.
And that NEH harmonisation is just amazing is it not?!

My favorite hymn! What a delight to hear this this morning. I have a comment about the lyrics thought - whatever editor replaced "Alleluia, Alleluia", with all those "Praise Him"s did NOT have a good idea.

Wow, I really like how well everything seems to be regulated, and how well everything seems to work together on that instrument. There’s a beautiful cohesiveness to all of the different ensembles, which is very well shown by your registration choices.
    Thanks!!

It would be very difficult to sample because of the outside noise… next to a busy train line and Borough Market. I think it’s probably the UK’s nosiest cathedral!

I see. In any case, I hope you continue to sample organs. The Romsey set is top notch. I don’t have it yet. But I heard it on your channel.

Beautiful! Extremely well done. Just like it should be performed. I can hear you know exactly what you do and what this style demands/needs. And it fits perfectly in the English choir/organ tradition. I totally love it!

I grew up in the church here in America - my dad being the pastor. I love the hymns but this one was never one of them. Not sure why some English hymns aren't sung in some churches here and others are. Anyway, I am learning about those other hymns through channels like this one on my quest to learn more about my family's British background (My Great Grandfather immigrated to the U.S. From London in the 1800's and his mother was a seamstress for Queen Victoria). This is my favorite English hymn and was done brilliantly. Thank you!

Hi, could you start putting the specifications of the organs in the description of the videos like the Scot brothers because I always find that really interesting! Also thanks for the vid, it was the first hymn I played in a service!

Excellent work sir. When I was a teenager during the 1970s, my parents gave me The Scottish Psalter and Church Hymnary (1929), which has the sheet music and lyrics of hundreds of psalms, hymns and canticles, a birthday gift that I still treasure. Anyway, Praise My Soul has always been my favorite hymn, and I taught myself to play it on our old clapped-out piano. The point of my comment is to let you know that, as far as my ear is capable of discerning, you have reproduced the music exactly as laid out in this book. Sounds magnificent when played on a huge, high quality pipe organ by a true artist like yourself. :)

Yep passed the hairs on the arm test. No joking aside. The sound is just awe inspirting, which is why I have such a love for the instrument.
It's a bit like the bible is to books,, The organ is to instruments.

What I want, is a computer programme, just like this one (as used for Praise Him, Praise Him, Jesus our blessed Redeemer) that will highlight each individual note as it is played but separately for each different part, soprano, alto, mezzo-soprano, tenor, bass etc. so that people can learn to sing their different part harmony for each hymn. Does anyone know of such a computer programme and whether such a programme is commercially available?
