  • Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. The last episode of Dean of Doom Season 2 will be dedicated to Lost Civilization, a 21-level megawad made by Jaakko Impola a.k.a. Jaska, in 2019. We’ve covered some diamonds in the rough this season: No Rest for the Living, Nova II, Tangerine Nightmare, Auger Zenith, and of course the bite-sized buffet of Sawed-Off Wads, but I saved Lost Civilization for last because it’s the one I’m most excited to showcase. If you’re not a daily Doomworld.com visitor or comprehensively Cacoward-literate, you are unlikely to have heard of Lost Civilization. Unmodded playthroughs of it are very scarce on the ‘Tube, and it’s rarely mingled with the heaviest hitters in conversations about personal favorite wads. The story They didn’t know it till now, but Doomworld users rd and TJG1289, are the reason this episode exists. Without their high regard for and glowing words about this wad, I would have shelved it for later and likely forgot about it. I’m really glad I didn’t. Lost Civilization is unlike anything I’ve ever seen in Doom: within a single playthrough, it became one of my desert island wads and today I hope to show you why.

The deep emotional outpouring that comes with your lovingly woven words on this old game is very deeply contagious, MtPain. I too found the Farmlands map utterly spellbinding on first playthrough, and was thrilled to see you give it the heartfelt write-up it justly deserved. Lost Civilization ranks very high on my all-time favorites list purely because of that map.

That was such a great video, and the wad looks so excellent, especially that first half.. I'm amazed! That Doomcute is out of this world, and the scope and scale of the maps is jaw-dropping.. Was hoping for Sunlust, but I can't deny I was incredibly happy to see the announcement of the wad you'd be covering in this episode. So glad Lost Civilization hasn't been forgotten! It's the ultimate adventure wad. Loved it when it came out, and I'm surely playing it again real soon!!!
This is the closest I've ever seen a wad come to Dark Souls-like exploration, which I love. Few secret walls, more like secret ledges, corners, roofs, which feel rewarding every time you find one. This wad made me happy in so many ways. And the midis are so peaceful. And the architecture, oh boy. You go from tuscanian rolling fields to castles to forests. Feels like everything but doom, yet it's doom through and through.
And most of all, it's so accessible. Not rng-heavy, not too difficult, just perfectly balanced for me. I'd recommend everyone to look at the cacoward winners each year and play them. You could miss out on gems if you don't.

First of all, I did not expect this WAD this season. As I mentioned on the Struggle video, I expected this to be the ep 17 slot next season, but I'm very glad I got it earlier than expected!
Second, I absolutely did not expect to be one of the reasons you played this. That shoutout was so unexpected. rd I expect, just cause of how good their writing is when it comes talking about Doom WADs, but me? Thank you so much, and I'm very, VERY glad you enjoyed the WAD! Reminds me I need to update my top WADs list in that one thread, since I forgot to put this WAD on there in the first place. Oops.
But yeah, once again, you absolutely nailed why I like this WAD so much. Easily, the most realistic-looking WAD I've ever played. These locations look so good, some of them even put Build-engine levels to shame. Areas that look lived in but still feel like Doom are my absolute favorites, and LC is the pinnacle of that. The architecture, detailing, and Doomcute are some of, if not the best, I've ever seen. Even though these maps are huge, I don't mind it cause they're so fun to explore! I love the touch of having duplicates of keys for people who don't care about maxing a level and just want to go at their own pace. I think maps 3, 5, and 13 are my favs. The combat does seem to play second fiddle to the visuals and design, but I honestly do not care. These maps are just a wonder to play, and I hope the sequel is just as good if not better. I hope more people check this WAD out after watching this, cause it absolutely deserves it.

You mentioned the Farmlands as being memorable and special to you in a post I read probably a year ago: it stuck with me, and motivated me to go a little further in the wad, since I hadn't reached MAP 03 yet. Thank you.

    • @Keldor314
      @Keldor314 2 роки тому

I actually feel like if the combat design was stronger, it would detract from the experience. You'd end up focusing more on the combat and less on the beauty of the map. Lost Civilization is such a chill experience, and the not particularly challenging enemies throughout most of the wad are just enough to keep your senses sharp without demanding too much focus on gameplay (at the expense of taking in the surroundings).
I also like the duplicates of keys in some of the larger maps. It makes them very nonlinear, and I feel like some of them (especially the final map) would benefit from a "pick your own story" approach where the player resists the urge to poke in every corner in a single playthrough and instead picks a direction and sticks with it until they get to the end, and then picks a different path when they replay it. Also, some of these maps are big enough that if there were only a single key, you might end up overlooking it and spending half an hour backtracking about trying to find the area you missed.

If you don't have such a list, then I strongly recommend including one for the video descriptions in Season 3. IMHO that'll make it easier for people to explore your backlog. Cheers!

It took me a while to get around to play Lost Civ. but thanks to you I finally have. And I just completed River Valley just a little ago. What a gem of map!!! I hadn't felt such a sense of wonder exploring a Doom Map since when I played Jade Earth for the first time, I think. It is honestly the single best Doom map I've ever played and one of the most interesting and joyful to explore worlds I've ever experienced in videogames in general. Thank you so, so much for sharing this wad with us MtPain. And of course, thank you so much Jaska for making this masterpiece.
Edit: oh, and forgot to mention. River Valley is the only Doom map I know of that almost-but-not-quite allows for a zombie run. That is, using the voodoo doll in the lumbermill at the beginning, hurt yourself with a barrel and then shoot the voodoo doll until Doomguy becomes a zombie. Then you can go through about two thirds of the map with all enemies ignoring you since you are a zombie. It's not actually possible to complete the map like this because a gaggle of imps block the entrance to the cave section that precedes the cathedral fight and as a zombie there is no way to move them out of the way.

I did not know this WAD from its name. I love Lost Civilization especially with the Trailblazer mod. The fun is great.

it’s so refreshing to see someone with the same deep emotional connection with this wad. during the begging of the pandemic, I was on the verge of an emotional collapse, the future was numb and I didn’t know exactly what would happen next. However, one day I stumble at this wad, I adored everything about it, the music, the architecture, the overall mood, literally everything, so it distracted me from the stresses of the real world at the time. Lost civilization helped me through tough times and is my favorite wad of all time. Thank you Jaska for this experience and thank you MtPain for this wonderful video and probably my favorite ep of the series.

This has the most gorgeous map designs I have ever seen in the Doom engine. Like this runs circles visually around anything ID software themselves made on this engine.

A phenomenal WAD to end out the season. I'm definitely grabbing this one to go through later on. This is definitely something worth experiencing for yourself. The Dean's glowing final grade is just the icing on top of the non-linear cake.

EDIT: I clearly underestimated the quality of this megawad. This might take a while.

The Map 17 track is a slightly goofy MIDI cover of Granite by Pendulum. The original track works better energy-wise.

So I'm close to the end of this wad and I have to say so far I've liked it a LOT! Again I'm playing through it with Corruption Cards and this time I went for an effect where every few minutes, damaging rain falls in all outside areas. This drastically changes how you gotta approach these maps since more than 90% is an outside area. You deliberately have to search for spots with some ceiling or a roof over your head, which makes my playthrough an even more interesting experience.
The toughest map under these circumstances was map 05, because the only safe spot is near the top of the volcano, and the very end of the map.
But enough of that, I'm really liking all the exploration and the natural environments in this wad. Map 4 took me 2 hours to complete and I had to use google to find the BFG secret, but the map is perfectly doable without it. Map 4 felt like its own little adventure and the acid rain effect slowed my gameplay down even more, but I didn't mind it. Fun fact: In the very beginning of this map inside the sawmill, you can actually see another one of those NPCs you found in one of map 13's secrets.
I have to say I'm not the biggest fan of the city levels later on but they're still fun. The Nightmare map was an exciting little departure and mini-challenge, I actually struggled quite a bit with it my first time around.
I'm curious what the final few maps are gonna be like, I'm currently in map 15.

This seems like an especially interesting megawad, much different from the more linear levels we've seen in Doom, thanks for bringing light to this one as I feel we need more Doom wads that try to replicate real enviroments.

Damn, what a joyride Season 2 has been. Awesome work, awesome wads! Excited for graduation day, Dean - congrats on muscling through this season, especially the past couple months of near-weekly uploads. That's a very tough schedule to keep up and you've earned yourself a good long break for surviving it. Please do take care of yourself and rest for a while - you must be exhausted, and burnout is the enemy. Take as much time as you need, it'll just make season 3 that much more exciting when you're ready to bring it!

Thanks for sharing this beautiful wad. I started to play it because of your review and i'm not dissapointed. My personal favorite map is 04 - river valley. I got so excited about all this organic connections / alternative routes in this level. Never felt so happy for searching secrets in doom. So much fun in exploration here.

I haven't gone beyond map 6 yet (desperately need to upgrade my rig), but 4 has the best gameplay by a mile. At least if your PC is better than the 2015-ish average...
*EDIT 1 YEAR LATER:* I was correct about that last assumption. A Ryzen CPU and a GPU that supports Vulkan can run _all_ of Lost Civ with essentially no frame drops; only map20 brings the framerate to 50-ish FPS if you look over the huge central vista.

I had to play through the WAD first before even watching this episode, and I do not regret it one bit. Thank you for making me aware of this glorious behemoth of aesthetics and immersive environment. I think the first half of the WAD is the strongest, especially the first three maps. The perfect atmosphere setters. It actually caused me to make a decision to simply walk through the maps instead of running - not out of caution, but due to the sheer immersive atmosphere it has. It gave me a strong feeling of Doomguy investigating the remnants of a civilization that once prospered, now with only monsters remaining and few survivors to tell the tale.
    Fun All Around: MAP09
Visually Impressive: (almost) ALL OF IT
    Slog To Wade Through: MAP20
    Forgettable Blank: Probably MAP17
Blood-Boiler (frustrating): MAP20, purely because of the secrets.
    Jawbreaker (difficulty spike): MAP19
