      Recently, some jackass started puking up blood about Brutal Doom in the same contrarian style that GManLives has engendered (but not founded) in the video that he has since deleted. Martinoz made a rebuttal: ua-cam.com/video/_2or_Sm90fQ/v-deo.html
      I also recommended your video about Vanilla Doom to that guy who Martinoz offered a rebuttal to. He's young and very, very stupid, so be polite. I know you don't play Brutal Doom all that much, but the complaints can be mitigated by how Sgt. Mark IV had remedied the mod over the years.

      UV is the hardest enemy and item placement, it's there to give enough challenge on subsequent playthoughs when you've memorised the levels. HMP is supposed to be the mode to give the ideal challenge on a blind playthrough.
      The problem with making UV the appropriate challenge on a blind playthrough is where do you have to go after that? It destroys replay value.

      To be fair, the ultraviolence thing was started by id themselves. And for veteran players, even UV has become pretty easy nowadays, at least in the vanilla game.
      As for the gamepad, I first played Doom on PlayStation and it was great. However, when I bought my first PC 2 years later and discovered the joys of playing with a mouse, which allowed for *much* better movement and aiming accuracy, I very gladly never looked back. I understand the contempt PC players hold towards playing with a controller because it just sucks by comparison. Shitting on the poor console players who don't know better is not cool though.

      Sourceport elitism is one of the most toxic elements of OG Doom community. If people get into Doom via GZ, and stick with it; then naturally itll become obvious that there are uses, preferences and gamefeel desires that other ports have.

  • @Kevin-jb2pv
    @Kevin-jb2pv 4 роки тому +119

    The crosses on medkits thing is a reference to the fact that one of the more recent rereleases of the classic wads replaced the red cross symbols on the medkits with these weird little pill logos because the Red Cross organization decided that they were going to start suing the shit out of every video game developer who used "their trademark" on game health kits. So developers started replacing that symbol with a bunch of different things for a while, though I've started seeing red crosses in some new stuff, again, so I don't know if the Red Cross got slapped down in court or if companies have started licensing from them or what happened with all that. However some devs are still not going back to the red cross symbol either because they're still worried about lawsuits, don't want to pay licensing fees, or are just kind of giving the finger to the Red Cross. This seems to be Bethesda's route, so instead now Doomguy picks up boxes of medicinal marijuana to heal wounds (anyone who doesn't live in a state with legal medicinal/ recreational pot shops: green cross = reefer healing)

    • @DoomKid

      lol, this makes me like green crosses just that little bit more.

    • @cygnus_XI
      @cygnus_XI 4 роки тому +23

      Just to add to this, but for people who don't know, it's actually against the Geneva Convention to misuse the red cross apparently. The argument that the Red Cross uses, direct from their website, is that having the symbol in a video game "distorts its meaning and its protective value for victims of conflict and the aid workers that assist them" somehow, and therefor they have to spend their valuable time harassing indie developers and other development companies from including a red shape in their game, as opposed to using that money and resources towards helping people and giving aid to victims of disasters and armed conflict. It's one of the reasons why I think the majority of international law is a joke and that it shouldn't be taken all too seriously.

      @@cygnus_XI So, that's more or less it.
      I've been wondering for a long time now how the heck anyone can claim legal ownership over a scarlet plus shape. I mean, Doom (2016) switched to blue plusses. It's the same shape, but a different color. No one should even be able to own this. I mean, can someone claim ownership over a purple square, a green Letter "E", or an orange Number "5"? No, of course not. I remember when I studied copyright, I was informed right up front that there is no legal precedent in being able to do such a thing, yet here's "The Red Cross" doing exactly that, which, as far as I can tell, is NOT legal.
      On another note, there's also the question about how any company can own the rights to Zorro when the character pre-dates copyright, and the original creator had nothing to do with this company. And don't get me started on the "Happy Birthday" song!

    • @cygnus_XI
      @cygnus_XI 4 роки тому +11

      @@Lugbzurg Typically we aren't allowed to copyright a shape, such as a circle or a triangle, so you're absolutely right. It has to be much more unique. But the red cross isn't technically protected by a copyright or trademark. But they can get away with protecting it because many countries have agreed to the Geneva Convention anyway. On the flip side, you can find numerous games that use the Red Cross and it never became an issue, and I've never heard of the Red Cross actually pursuing any legal action against developers, as the majority of them agree to removing it from their game. (The developers of Prison Architect have a good podcast where they talk about their in-depth experience with the Red Cross if you're interested.)

    edit: for everyone replying "whats wrong with having mod support?"; brutal doom uses specific coding programs which are native to gzdoom and only gzdoom, which is why you cant find brutal doom on other ports like prboom. however gman isnt very intellectually inclined when it comes to doom so he has no idea about that, so saying that brutal doom should be in the new port is basically saying "i want you to redo your entire engine using a public property and go through a ton of legal business in order to have this one specific mod on your new port". its a complete misunderstand of how gzdoom modding and compatibility works.
    also, the new port does have dehacked support, so you can load vanilla mods. i recommend valiant, D4V and rekkr if youre interested.

    I’ve watched a lot of Gmanlives content, and while I enjoy his work I’m surprised there aren’t more people responding to his videos. For example, in his review of a game called Rake he says that the Unity engine is an unstable mess, even though a large majority of indie games (including popular ones like inside I believe) are made with it, and the poorly optimized ones are usually asset flips looking for a quick buck. Another thing is that he complained that it was too linear (which was a problem due to it being a freerunning game), but he criticized Mirrors Edge Catalyst for being open world.

    • @Keldor314
      @Keldor314 4 роки тому +2

      It's mostly the level of complexity. If you look at GZDoom closely, you'll find it supports multiple different ways of scripting pioneered by multiple other engines, and pulled in from other games using the Doom engine (which GZDoom can also run), but with other differences under the hood, like Hexen and Strife. It's a gigantic kitchen sink.
      GPL-wise, Bethesda would probably be in the clear reimplementing Boom features as long as they didn't copy any of the actual original source code from Boom. From this perspective, the Boom feature list is like a printed specification. This is much the same as why emulators are legal, despite the manufacturers not licensing out their hardware at all.

    A quick story: I forget if it was Skull tag or Zdamon but, one of my fondest memories of Doom multiplayer was where we had this huge map set and a bunch of players co-op'd this together. Like it was so funny remembering shooting at this big boss with a bunch of people while there was a spongebob song being played in the background. I spent hours going through all the maps and I remember I got to a point where we hit the level that I first joined on. I was like, "It's been fun! I'm going to bed!" I haven´t read ALL of the comments, so maybe this was already mentioned (or a couple of times...): Classic DooM and DooM 2 have been un-banned in Germany for 9 years at this point.....but only the German Version, with the altered Secret Level. The main-reason why Classic DooM and DooM 2 were banned back in ´93/´94 wasn´t the Swastika (DooM 1 was banned as well), but because of the violence. Means DooM II was banned in ´94 even WITH the altered level.
    Then some time ago we had some changes here in Germany regarding Nazi-Symbols/Nazi-stuff in Games.......so the new Wolfenstein-games for example can be bought in Germany without alterations....Wolf 3D was un-banned as well, so the original Version of the Secret Levels shouldn´t be a problem anymore in Germany.

      Bei Resi 4 ist der Publisher selber verantwortlich den deutschen Kunden die Uncut-Version zugänglich zu machen. Allerdings scheint die Version bei Steam mittlerweile Uncut zu sein; selbst wenn im Store immer noch "Low Violence" Version steht. Im Steam-Forum zu Resi 4 haben seit 2016 zig Leute bestätigt dass die ehemals geschnittenen Sachen (Mercenaries, Assignment Ada) auch in der deutschen Version enthalten sind.

But if I remember correctly there is a deadline of 25 years; after that any media on the Index has to be re-evaluated automatically.
      Regarding Resi 4.....here again it is the Publishers turn .......Capcom has to unlock the Uncut Version of Resident Evil 4 for german customers. The thing about the medkits with crosses on them does have some history. Basically, the Red Cross organization got upset with games for using the red cross symbol all over the place, and since they created the symbol as their trademark in the first place, were well within their rights to ask others to stop using it. In fact, they probably had a legal obligation to do so in order to keep owning the trademark under US copyright law - if you allow just anyone to use it whenever they want, you've waived your right to use it as an exclusive trademark. In any case, this meant that the versions of Doom and Doom 2 shipped with Doom 3 BFG and later as standalone releases had red dashes, and later red pill symbols on their medkits. So the in the Unity release, they reintroduced the cross, though they made it green to avoid the original trademark issue. That's what GManLives was referring to.

    It's pretty simple: GmanLives is a zoomer. Stale meme aside, his complaints and comments are literally the ones a casual player would make who never really interacted with Doom before. His complaints about GZDoom's options are a perfect illustration of that, it would indeed seem complicated if you have no idea how Doom works.

    Pleaee read: footnote on german videogame censorship:
    The well-known harsh german videogame censorship stems from the late 70s/early 80s, back when videogames first became a thing and was tied directly to the popularity of slasher movies.
    As germany had no proper age-restriction system and parents and educators alike started complaining, the BPjM (Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefärdende Medien/ Federal control agency for youth-endangering media), which already had existed since 1954 but mosty was in charge of keeping childrens literature free of violence, got expanded, so they also started looking at videogames. And because videogames, of course, were games and thusly automatically "for kids", the hammer got put down hard, and every second game got "Indexed", e.g. taken out of circulations. The censorship was very harsh, as the legislation behind it was unrevised since the early days of the west german state. If the helicopter of your Atari 2600 Game could drop bombs, your game got indexed for "waging an offensive war". Any depiction of violence was concidered unsuitable for the percieved target audience and all went to hell.
    In 1994, the USK (Unterhaltungssofware Selbstkontrolle/Entertainmentsoftware selfregulation, which is in charge of age restricition) was founded of revised principles. Now, violence could be censored instead of outright banned (it should be noted that censored versions of games for release in germany where a thing before the USK was founded), but there still was no way to get away with nazi imagery, as per jurisdiction, only educational works and works of art were allowed to show these. Since that jurisdiction stems from the 50s, videogames were not classified as art as they barely existed.
    Since 2012 or something, they got quite more liberal though, and violence is barely censored anymore, nor do games still get indexed (I think the last one I am aware of was "Hatred") and already indexed games are taken from the index.. Also, since a year or two, videogames are conciderred as pieces of art and are allowed to show swastikas, so that future releases of Wolfenstein wont need any censorship

    Edit: Sorry for rambling, I jsut have a lot of thoughts about this... I need a hobby besides Doom.
    I should mention also that it's all based on the code from the BFG edition version of Doom 1 and 2, which ran on the id Tech IV engine as a wrapper. And I would definitely agree that the Master Levels are a bit disjointed, but they're not supposed to be congruent. I really like the new widescreen status bar as well. Overall the new version is definitely a lot more no-frills than ZDoom or PRBoom+, but I'm not sure why they didn't use the original Boom/Zdoom secret sound.
    We have to think in terms of who's gonna be playing this version of Doom: It's not the people who are already on GZDoom and other advanced source ports, it's first-timers and casuals for the most part. I know if I were playing for the first time agian I wouldn't have wanted to go through the rigamarole of figuring out how to work DOSbox, then get Chocolate Doom installed, and then finally figure out how the hell the GZDoom menus work. I would've been more than okay with what I had available through Steam if this was there a few years ago. And also, it's great that they include the original IWADs so that if you want to get more advanced with source ports and mods, you can.
    Also, how the hell did he not even bring up BTSX? That's what inspired the UV+ difficulty, and BTSX is easily one of the best Doom addons of all time, but I guess I agree that the other approved WADs are a bit half-baked. It's pretty much the only reason I bought these ports on iOS and Xbox One. And there are achievements in the console versions, so there's no reason why they couldn't put those in once they put in online multiplayer.

    My biggest gripe with this guy is that he shills and he doesn't do a good job of concealing that. The best proof you can get is when he contradicts his opinion from older videos. A good example of this is his two Turok 2 videos, one for the original PC launch in 98 where he states that its a relatively mediocre game and then one when the Remaster came out from Nightdive where he immediately starts slobbering over it calling it "one of the best classic shooters of all time"
    And when people do point out these blatant mistakes, he holds some serious grudges. Good example is with Civvie, who made a single quip of saying how he doesn't understand how Gmanlives would praise the launched port of Blood due to its bugs and for that Gman STILL has a grudge over that guy.

The difficulty used the full amount of enemies placed on the map and it's probably the difficulty ID mean us to play once we got hold of how the game plays, kinda just like how they said in Quake's manual.
    I actually played on I'm Too Young to Die since I've first played Doom around 2016, then Hurt Me Plenty and eventually I decided to settle on UV since then once I finally got the hang of the game's mechanics, weapons and enemies.

      That controller remark caught me off guard because controllers are way more precise than the classic arrow layout, and I remember using old school joysticks for Doom as well. Gman never played Doom without mouselook probably.
      It's also telling how he thinks the original midi is superior just because it's what he thinks the original audio was meant to sound like, while the Unity "port" is actually more faithful, even if prerecorded. All in all it sounds like he's trying hard to look like the guy who played shooters before they were cool, Doom being this epitome of "skilled FPS game" makes him apply all the (rather modern) pro FPS arguments (M/KB is a must for shooters, controller is the worst way to play shooters, Ultra Violence is the real way to play Doom, Unity is bad, old engine makes music sound better).
