Tamia | Music, Love, A Serious Illness & Why She Never Reached The Height of Other Singing Divas

  • Whitney, Mariah and Celine. Three superstar singing divas with a lot in common. They’re all stunningly beautiful. Their careers all experienced tremendous success in the ‘90s and their voices all possess that IT factor that make people sit up and take notice as soon as they hear the first note. Another songstress that could definitely hold her own up against this trio is Tamia. She looked just as good and could hit all the notes they could. However, even with the backing of some major players in the industry, her career never took off the way people expected it would.

I remember this one UA-camr I watched saying, "Why wouldn't she be on Basketball Wives?" Then someone responded, "Because she's an actual wife." And I fell out laughing.

Props to Tamia for dropping that truth bomb about "Basketball Wives". The "Real Housewives" franchise is basically the same thing. A lot of them are not married or even in a relationship and I feel these shows paint a bad picture of housewives and marriage in general; the men are unfaithful and the women just drink and argue with each other.
SN: How come you don't have a "Thanks" button? I wanted to use it to say thanks for doing a video on Tamia! 😊

....well, there was ONE diva that was slightly mentioned that hindered Tamia's overall 90's success...***DEBORAH COX!!!*** ...Tamia was constantly in Deborah's shadow, i terms of similar looks, whereabouts (both are Canadian), and demographics....(cont.)
....Deborah & Tamia are CLASSIC Soul Singers, and were given hip-hop / street influenced R&B (or, had their singles remixed as such); Both became MASSIVE Dance Club Divas in 2001, when they were constantly mixed up, when "Absolutely Not" & "Stranger In My House (Thunderpuss Club Mix)" were on the charts, at the SAME time....
...Tamia was VERY wise to go the 'Adult R&B' route, because that was her 'lane' from the start, with "Q"...THAT'S why she's getting her flowers...and, RIGHTFULLY so...
PS, I had the chance to promote her in 1998 (to Dance Clubs), and I turned it down, because I wanted to work with DEBORAH! ....I'm so SHADY! ....ha-HAAA!!

I feel like the Canadian music industry let her down, up to this day none of her albums and singles are certified there. She and Deborah were supposed to be the most successful R&B Female artists there, but Deborah was more versatile and having Clive Davis helped a bit. I don't understand why Quincy Jones didn't put her on the map as he did with Tevin Campbell

Short answer: Tamia has no stage presence, she refused to sell sex in her music and through her wardrobe (like Shanice Wilson and Deborah Cox), she was wildly inconsistent with her output, she NEVER had the right material even when working with the right producers, she was overexposed to us so early in her career, and she doesn't have a unique or distinct voice.
