Johnny Cash Understand Your Man lyrics
Don’t call my name out your window, I’m leaving
I won’t even turn my head
Don’t send your kinfolk to give me no talking
I’ll be gone, like I said
You’d just say the same old things
That you be saying all along
Just lay there in your bed and keep your mouth shut
    Till I’m gone
Don’t give me that old familiar cry and fuss and moan
    Understand your man
I'm tired of your bad mouthing
    Understand your man
Now, you can give my other suit to the Salvation Army
And everything else I leave behind
I ain't taking nothing that'll slow down my traveling
    While I'm untangling my mind
I ain't going to repeat what i said anymore
While I'm breathing air that ain't been breathed before
I'll be as gone to as a wild goose in winter
    Then you'll understand your man
    Meditate on it
    You hear me talking now
    Understand your man
    Remember what i told ya

Remember, that is the great Mr. Cash. He had a very rough go of it, a lot rougher than a lot of us can understand. He had his vices, don't hold that against him. His struggles with substance use shouldn't change how you think of him, just understand your man.

After all these years of thinking I was hearing where Dylan got “Dont Think It’s Alright” I find out that after Dylan gave that song to Cash, Cash used some of the melody when he wrote this. Good friends share, and Dylan was a Cash fan from way back until the end. I guess there were no hard feelings.

It actually began with a traditional folk song in the public domain called "Who's Gonna Buy You Chickens When I'm Gone?" Folkie Paul Clayton reworked it as "Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons When I'm Gone?" and recorded it in 1960. When Dylan came to NYC he befriended Clayton, who taught Dylan "Who's Gonna Buy You Chickens?" Dylan took it from there and came up with "Don't Think Twice." The same melody runs through all those songs and Johnny Cash just continued to borrow it...

Makes since they were both good friends and were signed under Columbia Records. I think Johnny did the melodic structure best cause he added a Tex~Mex element to it.
