- An indepth look at the history, engineering and operation of the two cross river tunnels which help keep the Liverpool City Region connected.
The picture of the men at 12:52 my great grandad Is next to the ladder on the left against the wall,, I have this very picture with some of the men’s names written on the back and his original payslip
That's brilliant!
Great little doco that, nice one!
Drove it many times in 60s.....never forgot Birkenhead and Liverpool and the Wirral where I grew up....
Spent time in Liverpool in the 70s. Used either tunnel numerous times both by car and on motorcycle. I don't remember exactly but the toll in those days must have been nominal as I don't ever remember hurting me.
The narrator Sounds like Simon O'Brien from brookie.
I can see my Grandad in the crowd 🤗😍
Very interesting video indeed. I particularly liked the scene at 5:17 showing the fully automated cash cow 🐄. She must be so pleased.
Do you remember the massive thieving that was eventually uncovered? Someone realised the tolls collected no way matched the number of vehicles using the new tunnel. A secret audit discovered an extensive ongoing fraud involving toll collectors and their supposed supervisors. Toll collectors were found with second homes in Spain that they couldn't explain how they afforded. There were many prosecuted. A secure system was introduced to eliminate any future risk. Now many pay using electronic means (number plate recognition) and recently 'contactless' payments were introduced.
@@nevillemason6791 yes I remember that it was about 30 or more years ago
Great vid
Awesome video. Liverpool is a beautiful city. I never been to Liverpool but I am hoping to go there next year.
Not a dump anymore…… when I was on the real Ark Royal the lads reckoned was best run ashore anywhere that was in 1970s try and book your trip with a trip up to Manchester on the ship canal even stay in Manchester it goes up one day comes back next ….. as dell Boy said Bon appetite
I stayed for 4 nights BC, (Before Covid), I plan a longer stay next time. A lovely city the one We liked best within the UK
did you manage to go
Brilliant engineering
After the 80 years, the debt was meant to be paid yet we are still seeing increased tunnel fees
To cross the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River from Fort Lee New Jersey to Upper Manhattan...the fee is $18. The bridge was built in the 1930s.
Exactly same with Dartford Tunnel, it’s a disgusting failure of governments
The number still don't add up, the government is making a fortune.
@@williambilly3269 probably paid for the second tunnel
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?"
The tenants arrive here and are carried along the corridor on a conveyor belt in extreme comfort, past murals depicting Mediterranean scenes, towards the rotating knives. The last twenty feet of the corridor are heavily soundproofed.
I mainly design slaughter houses !
drugs are BAD
Deliberate flesh interfaces always lack the flexibility of spontaneous segmentation, the geometry is just so less adaptable and the rapid fatality limits the broad portal creation.
Are those docks tunnels off the Queens way, which used be traffic lighted, still closed off?
33:06 I would imagine the guy with the paint roller worked full time. I wonder if he's finished yet 🤔
I haven't been through either tunnel for a while but I noticed the staffed pay booths had changed the name to attended. ?
In future, could you please either mix the music onto both channels, or use mono sound? If you use headphones, having the music in one ear and nothing in the other is very uncomfortable. You managed the voiceover into both ears; the rest should be easy.
Did they dump the rubble in Otterspool,
Yes
The "kingsway" you will never, ever find ANY "royalty" in.
Shame the police didn’t catch the bent collectors who all bought the suchlike of yachts etc
I knew one of them he had bought his wife a brand new mini had his house done from top to bottom including double glazing and bought a canal boat he got eighteen months and did nine and got to keep everything, crime pays in this country
@@albresso6992 the good old days before they went for the cash
@@albresso6992 is that all they got
they did get caught and sent to prison...but tunnelled their way out!
Good reply
narrator: Simon O'Brien.
Birkenhead priory crossing was the first pay booth .Liverpool was a one horse town.even the horse was stolen
What motorway toll systems? @40:10
M6 Toll between Birmingham and Wolverhampton springs to mind...
Much safer as well two separate tunnels.
10 pence in tin foil worked well.. In the late 80s when it was 50p
People nowadays are winning far more with the lottery than it took to build the tunnels, can’t believe that it took so long to repay the borrowings
A staff of over 80 dedicated police to "maintain safe traffic flow" , 100 full time engineers , back up power to maintain light and ventilation , and other staff ! this must cost Millions $ a month to run . Would have been better off building a bridge with none of these running costs.
If a bridge had been cheaper, a bridge would have been built.
@@tooleyheadbang4239 Several "bridges" were built in that "tunnel". The only thing that made the tunnel "cheaper" was "cheap labor" and absolutely zero "overhead" for the real construction equipment "Great Britain" couldn't begin to build "in-house" and would have had to import. During a "Great Depression".
@@deeremeyer1749 I believe building tunnels during the 'Great Depression' was an American idea.
Would it have survived the May Blitz of 1941?
Might be paid for next Century
Why do You think Your tunnel is the safest in the UK?
Skip the first eight minutes, it is corporate crap. After that it starts to become interesting.
Never have the correct money £180 so its £2 after watching this no worries .
I thought they sold ownership to Canadian teachers pension fund or was there a big buy back.Scotland SNP dropped all tolls nowt that’s why they are voted in
Tunnels Police Force. What a joke. Please tell your veiwers that THEY are not part of Merseyside Constabulary.
rip off tolls should be free for lpool dwellers
The narrator sounds like a slightly speeded up Alexei Sayle.
that will be Simon O'Brien...off of Brookside
Both have been fully paid for a number of years but still keep stealing money from everyone using the tunnels
Dartford Crossing is the same.
You carnt kill a cash cow 🐄 🤑 ££££££££
Can we have subtitles so the rest of us in the U.K. can understand what you are saying 😉
What country did you flee from?....
Imperceptible Scouser accent but still very comprehensible
