When I worked at Suncoast Motion Picture Company in college, Beetlejuice was an in-store favorite. We were in a mall, and had mall-facing screens and speakers to draw shoppers. We had to turn down the volume during one scene, though. I turned the knob the wrong way one day, and the entire mall heard "NICE FUCKING MODEL!" :)
When interviewers ask Michael Keaton to name the most fun he had playing a character, his favorite role, or one that he most wishes to reprise, etc, he invariably replies, "Three words. Betelgeuse. Betelgeuse. Betelgeuse." And who could blame him? It is clear in his performance that as an actor he COULD NOT in any way be having more fun. Hell, I'd wager he's still crapping out bits of the scenery to this very day.
Keaton in this movie reminds me of Orson Welles in ‘The Third Man’. He’s in a small portion of the movie, but his presence dominates the work overall. His scenes are the ones remembered and quoted
Just watched this again after a bunch of years. I was really surprised how long it took for Beetlejuice appeared and then became a more active part of the plot.
Would love to see you do Edward Scissorhands. Many of the scenes, including the mall and beauty parlor ones, were filmed in my town of Lakeland Florida.
So when Bettlejuice came out I was 27. That may have aged me out from enjoying this film. I have sat through it twice in its entirety. Both times I thought it was a terrible movie. With the exception of Michael Keaton, whom I enjoy as an actor in almost everything he has been in, and noticing Winona Ryder for the first time as actress. I don't think I had seen her in anything else at this point. I didn't like Michael Keatons character which is unusual since I enjoy most of the movies he has been in. To me it comes down to I just don't like Tim Burton films, for the most part, with the exception of the first Batman with Michael Keaton. Mr. Burton's films simply do not connect with me. I don't get his humor and with the exception of Michael Keaton's first Batman they are to dark...in my opinion. As always your review of the Beetlejuice is spot on and I enjoyed it.
I'd forgotten how many big names were in this, including Sylvia Sidney, a fantastic actress I've seen in several old, old films.

Lydia Deetz and her aesthetic were a game-changer for 12-year-old me, is all I can say.
