I got a 318iS for just $300 all it needed was a new clutch. I ended up buying a 325iS that has a seized motor for $200. Snagged the Diff out of it which was the diff from the automatics. 3.93 gear ratio from the 3.45 that comes standard in the 318iS 5 speeds. that helped it get up and going quite a bit. Got a new ECU, built a custom intake from some tubing and fiber glass that pulled in cold air from the fog lights and got rid of that odd folded aluminium intake. Welded up the exhaust from the 325i, then advanced the timing on the intake cam. (the M42 motors came with adjustable cam sprockets from the factory), and made a custom bracket and used the wiring harness and ignition coils from the 325iS to make a Coil on plug ignition system, Stuck the larger Radiator from the 325iS in it. The thing was pretty zippy for a 4 banger. Put poly bushings all around and poly steering flex coupler. It was fun to drive around and it still got pretty decent gas mileage.
Updated 1.95L engined of the last of the E36 318is coupes has similar power to 320i coupe BUT you usually get more torque in a 4 cylinder vs 6 cylinder per litre (more bang or less mechanical friction of extra cyylinders) so depends if you want refinement of 6 cylinder vs slightly better torque curve=acceleration. I have a 1998 318is, had it since 2003, might give it a full cosmetic restoration

I used to have 318is, and everybody said get a 6 cyl, 4 cyl are garbage, then I got e 320 and it's horrible to drive, and burns much more fuel as a daily. So now I am looking again for a 318is.
I have a m44 4 cylinder 1.9 ltre and i love it!..i love the way these motors whine out they sound great and have plenty of torque!..a fun car to drive!

NeverStock bmw says that the 316i with m43b16 does 0-100 13 sec. Accordig on my gps it does 11.2sec.. my friend did puta his stock m43b18 on dyno and did get 124hp on crank.. looks like bmw did lie in the old days... just like vw..

I totally agree that the e36 does better with a 4cyl, something about ripping the shit out of a 4cyl is just super fun though. I’d love a 250hp 4 cyl e30 4 door with diving board bumpers canyon car. My daily is m50 e34 & I’d need 350hp to have fun I’d think. But that may be my SRT8 Magnum (power to weight ratio is pretty good) coming through hahaha
You dont need as much power on the track you want to carry as much speed as possible. Weight and balance is everything. 200hp in a 2000 pound car is just as fast as a 3-400 hp car at 3.5k pounds.
Love it 👌🏻 yes I'm running a 6pot because it's the cheaper bang for buck but I love a 4pot! Learnt so much in my 318ti and I wish I'd kept to it longer before going 6pot
bmw had to run a 2.0 4pot because of regulations not because they were faster on track than the 6 pots , 36s with s54s in are the quickest things round tracks in the uk in the cscc and i think most other things im not sure if there is anything out there faster at the min
No he's running a custom intake manifold. Said he tried itb's but they didn't perform as well as his intake manifold he built for it. You can see/read a little more about it on his instagram.

Hell yes haha. Got the e30 version as my first car, got a turbo kit, clutch, coilovers, full suspension, and I daily it. It has 212k miles and will easily make it to 500k.

318i in europe and us is not the same though. 318i in europe is 115 hp the 318i in the US is known as 318is in Europe. Also the iS badge in europe doesn't mean coupe like it does in the US
No. There are mainly two versions of E46 318i, the one with the M43 (SOHC, 115HP) and the facelifted one with N42 (DOHC, 150hp). The first one is underpowered but reliable, the second one is powerful but unreliable (aluminium block, high thermostat open temperature, so it easily overheat, not gonna last), either way they're not comparable to a good E36 with the M42 or M44 (iron block, 140HP)
@@seigma5340 N42's are awesome engines, you just have to look after them....i would't say N42s are prone to overheat, but the e46 in general has some cooling issues. The only real problem the n42 has, is it's big number of sensors and actuators, which lead to major malfunctions when they fail. Mechanical failures are just the result of bad maintenance. Sick my Duck seriously it's an M44. I talk to Bruno and had a ride in the car with himself last night in High Wycombe. We took on a ep3 type r on test down the M4 and dropped it like shit stuck to carpet. I live very close to him and we will be working closely on my M44 stroker which is running the M47 crank. He will be going though my cylinder head, helping my stroker progress. M44s are the best choice for n/a, m42 are usually used for turbo applications although the m44s are also forged. Believe it or not, it's an M44 running around 210hp on his standard ECU, when his standalone was fitted before it broke on him it was 240hp approx. These are far more capable with bottom end work which I've seen some photos of Bruno's progress last night on his iPhone.
At 2:17 the shifter rattles I have the same thing in my 318is does !! Does anyone know how to fix that or what it may be ?! There’s also a lot of play in the shifter when in gears.

He compared it to a 325i, which makes 190 hp... the S54 is a completely different beast. More than double the 4 cylinder's power...
BMW could have used the 2.0 6 pot, but they chose the 4 pot for a reason

I think it have to be the M42, because its cam lifting is better and more resistant than the lifters on the m44.

Sick my Duck seriously it's an M44. I talk to Bruno and had a ride in the car with himself last night in High Wycombe. We took on a ep3 type r on test down the M4 and dropped it like shit stuck to carpet. I live very close to him and we will be working closely on my M44 stroker which is running the M47 crank. He will be going though my cylinder head, helping my stroker progress. M44s are the best choice for n/a, m42 are usually used for turbo applications although the m44s are also forged. Believe it or not, it's an M44 running around 210hp on his standard ECU, when his standalone was fitted before it broke on him it was 240hp approx. These are far more capable with bottom end work which I've seen some photos of Bruno's progress last night on his iPhone.
At 2:17 the shifter rattles I have the same thing in my 318is does !! Does anyone know how to fix that or what it may be ?! There’s also a lot of play in the shifter when in gears.
