How to create a custom Google Map with Route Planner and Location Markers - [ Google Maps Tutorial ]

In this video tutorial, I will show you how to create a custom Google Map with Route Planner and Location Markers.
Here are the key concepts you will learn in this video tutorial:
Create a Google account
Go to Google Maps: www.google.co.uk/maps
Select "Create Maps" from the Maps Tabs
Zoom in to your start location on Google Map
Add a title for Map and an optional description
Select the type of route - In this tutorial, I will use "Add walking route"
A single click on the Map to mark the start location
Start to draw the route on Map / Tip: Hold down the left mouse button to move the map
Double left mouse click to mark the endpoint on your Google map
Add a new layer then add a custom marker for displaying a stop-off point or point of interest / Tip: Add a custom icon
Add a custom image for the new marker on the map
Add a title for the custom marker
Add a new layer to create a new path to a different location from the last endpoint
Find a point on the new path and click to adjust the path
Give the new path a title
Click preview to display demo custom map
Click the share button
Select the correct sharing option for your map:
On - Public on the web - Anyone can find and access a map
On - Anyone with a link - Anyone who has the link can access
Off - Share with specific people
Option 1 - Copy the map URL and send it to someone via email or social media post
Option 2 - Click "Embed on my site"
Custom Google Maps are great if you want to share a planned route with friends, clients or family. I often use a Google Maps Route Planner when I am on holiday to make sure I get to see all the places using the quickest quote possible. I have also used a custom Google Map to build a charity walking route for a client project. The map was embedded on the client's website and also sent out as a link via email to participants.

The crappy thing about Google Maps is that Your Maps can't be used for step-by-step directions and you can't share a custom route you create in Maps. The option to share is there but the link it shares uses the starting and ending locations and will default to the most efficient route. Google needs to combine the 2 options.

I do a lot of hiking and while conceptually it would be good to share routes this way, it doesn't seem to like off road walks. I can use the measuring tool to measure a visible trail, but when I try to walk it, the default jumps from my starting point to the nearest road. Maybe I need to fiddle with it more. - I'm pretty sure one can NOT route more than 10 stops/locations. There is a trick to adding more but it's a PIA.
- If one is ever in need of wanting to 'stop' at a bunch of random stops/locations... google can not create the "best route"... mapquest, which do not like, can.

hey thanks for the video ...i use this method for multiple stops but all the time i get to one of the destinations then google gives the option to continue to the next destination and then i have to click it. How can you use this map now for live directions? It only allows it to be viewable, if you want to select a point to travel to it generates a faster route to take not the one you create. I made one for a scenic route not wanting to go the fastest route. Also, is their a way to edit the fastest route and save it as your own?

So you share the link but then your friends need direction for the car GPS or SatNav to get to the start of the walking path. Of course they will all be starting from different locations. So is there a way to create a real time directions that person could interact with to get there.

This is a really awesome and in-depth video! My girlfriend travels to school in a minor city in the USA and she encounters standstill traffic every day so i wanted to create an off the grid route for her so she can avoid main routes into the city and this really helps! Although she lives 135km away from me and i tried to pull the map up and it only shows the map preview and says i can only view the map legend, do i have to be there to start the route at point A or how do you start the route?

This is good... Thanks! However, I notice when I tried to this, and you seem this "problem" as well... The line has a Auto "snap to" that changes the route. If I am trying to build a detailed route with specific turns how do I turn off that "snap to" feature, or delete these superfluous turns that are auto inserted? Any Ideas?

You should be able to add new points to change direction

How does ride-sharing apps like QuickRide render overlaying paths of driver and rider in a single map? Which APIs to be used for it? It also shows their location and then pickup location and then drop location and finally their end stop. It's a beautiful way of showing it. Please help!

Can you then navigate a saved route with turn by turn directions? Or you just have to follow your location dot along the route?

Not sure you have to make yourself
