Google My Maps route planner [step-by-step tutorial]

- Google Maps Route Planner is a tool (Google My Maps) that I'm going to show you how to use to plan the best route for your next trip including pinning all your places you want to visit, i.e. pin the restaurants, pin places to stay, pin things to do, pin destinations, pin hiking and biking trails, pin people to visit! It's easy and it only takes a few minutes to set-up and get you going once you know exactly what to do. Once you've pinned everything, you can then figure out where you want to travel to in that area. Google My Maps can seem a little daunting at first, but once you know how to use it, you'll love it!

Hi, I'm Amber and in May 2017 I started full time RV living. I started this nomadic journey after selling my house and all my belongings to pursue this crazy dream of traveling full time in an RV and creating incredible memories.
After 1 year of traveling, I sold my 26 foot Winnebago Class C RV for a more nimble Class B van on a Promaster 2500 chassis. Now in my 4th year of RVing in my camper van, I'm still loving this RV lifestyle and being a digital nomad. I almost always boondock in nature and really enjoy that off grid living.

I think it misses a lot from Sygic Travel, where you can plan with time schedule and can move pins if it take too much, but paying.

Hi from the UK. I am brand new to Google My Maps. I just sat through 2 other overcomplicated UA-cam tutorials on GoogleMyMaps and was just about to have a long break in frustration when I came across your video and I was just like yes! thank you! I learned so much, you are a great teacher. I've used the my maps to plan motorcycle trips but I was uninformed about layers! This answered all the questions I didn't know to ask. Thanks!
Clear and to the point tutorial. Specifically liked layers with accommodations, sightseeing and friends&family separated and color-coded. Turning itinerary into a navigation on mobile device is still a mundane task but at least some solution.
My moto trip planning before this tutorial was based on putting next gas station. And big problem was Google's limit of 10 points.
Now with separate layers for gas and supply shopping places it can and will be done the easy way.

Thanks. Ive been using mymaps recently and just looking for ideas on how to enhance how I'm using it. Good to get your ideas. I use the layers for the different days or locations, but considering the way you do it by type and might re-organize. I also color by location, and I'm definitely going to change that to type. One question I still have is if I can re-organize the layers in the sorting priority I want, that you didn't mention. Good video - thanks!

Thank you for the detailed overview. I managed to figure a lot of this out but came to this video to see how to use the "directions" tool on mobile.
This is a massive oversight by Google. Seriously what's the point of doing a custome driving route with out being able to hit "start" and it populate on mobile ?
Just to see distance? Wow.
I tried using this feature while in Hawaii as we had 10 destinations along one road. I had to manually input each one because I couldn't figure out how to hit start on the directions layer. Ugh

I am now in the process of creating my own map, for once I'm in my tiny-home-on-wheels (hopefully by the fall, but latest by spring 2022). THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! P.S. I'm a dinosaur, so I still use pen and paper...but now all the places I wrote down on "GO TO" and now I can join the current century and have it all online with Google My Maps :-) lol

Thanks for demystifying this. I wish the Measure tool was better and had an option to map the distance to the best roads. As is, it's pretty useless to figure out the true driving distance, hence typical time required, between destinations.

What a great video. I like to track my trips so this will be a good way to keep a log of our route, what we did and where we stayed. How do you get the specific Byways in there?

So what you are saying is, I do whole a lot of work to plan a route between point A and point B, and when I go to maps to navigate, the app will chose whatever route it wants? That is pointless for a road trip!

Great Video. Do you know if it's possible to change the color of driving route? Say it takes you 2 days to get from Phoenix to Niagra Falls.. so Day 1 would be in Blue color, Day 2 would be in Yellow color.

Was looking for an alternative to what I was using. So the key seems to be pining locations and layers. Working on the desktop seems to be a neat way to make it all happen for a travel plan. -- was using RV PARKY app to accomplish much of the same. But good to know that GOOGLE MAPS can do it too.-- you might want to mention the GOOGLE MY MAPS app on Android (maybe iphone?) That can help you once you create a map

Nice video...I was hoping GoogleMaps allowed you to preplan driving routes...similar to a garmin GPS device. On my Zumo, I can preplan and upload by routes to the garmin, but not available in GoogleMaps it appears

Thanks for the tutorial . I recorded a trail during by cycle ride and placed it in the map by gpx file but there was a mistake in some part of recording so its not showing right path when placed in map . how can i edit the map to make it look right and use as reference for the next time ride. If you can explain in any video or reference video it will be helpful.
Very helpful...I'm definitely using this on my upcoming trip. Just curious and a bit off topic but for those frequently mapped areas (eg. San Francisco), instead of creating my own walking tour, is there a way to search for publically available google maps (eg. walking tour of Toledo, Spain) to use as a starting point for a custom walking tour?
I just found out users can't navigate from a My Map Directions...it's like the normal navigation functionality has been turned off for My Maps...big disappointment. Speak up if I'm missing something but My Maps is better for planning not navigating.

2. Can you make your maps public ? If yes how we can utilise it ? Can we search and find it ? Or do you need to share individual links ?

I have been making My Maps for years. As you showed at the end of your video one can't click on a location in the legend on your phone and navigate to that location directly. I'm looking for a way to convert My Maps to Starred or Favorites or Pinned, etc. to navigate quicker. This would also show these location on your car screen with Android Auto or CarPlay. Do you have any suggestion how to convert these to Starred places?

Great video Amber! Do you know if it's possible to customize the route rather than just use the default suggested route? I like to use the "Avoid Highways" option in the regular Google Maps but I can't find it in "My Maps".
Hi Amber, do you know if Google My Maps changed and has a restriction on the direction for one layer only?
I have a question if you can help. Even though google maps is set to miles, mymaps shows kilometers when I measure distances using the ruler. I can't see any way of changing this to miles. There is no scale in the bottom right corner to click on when using mymaps (there is a scale when I'm using google maps, which is set to miles ok). Thanks for the tutorial btw).

If you already have a bunch of stuff saved on google maps with the pink heart or green flag icon is it possible to just click on them and transfer them to your map layer so you can give them different icons?

@amberBaldwin, please can you assist me. I made a layer with all the places i want to go, with Markers. Now when I add the route, and put in the starting Destination and select the end destination, it takes main roads, to the start and end, and not link the road from marker to marker. How do I change that. I have more than 10 markers and doesnt allow me more. Is there a way to say go from start to end, and make sure the road it takes, links all the markers inbetween?
That's pretty cool. Just wondering can you set for hight of your rig. So your sure the route is correct for the size of your rig?

Great video - have you figured out a way for google maps to show you the most scenic route or via scenic highways?
Think you might create a layer of the scenic highways and build that layer via pins of destinations.
Does this work in offline mode?(using old phone as gps)

why is the option of public transport not available on planning routes on google my maps, it is just so annoying. I mean google maps is far more handy
