2.50 The clock dial was originally signed 'Causard Hger du Roy' & 'Suivt. la Cour' which basically means 'Clockmaker to the King and the Court'. This would not have appealed to Republicans who appear to have also replaced the original Fleur de Lys hands (which again have Royal connotations) with something less provocative.
Very interesting ! And yeah it does make sense...
Scrubbing may very well have been a political statement from the owner, rather of adhesion than fear. Many clocks survived without having been defaced, and the French revolution broke surprisingly few things, if you don't count necks in the total. It is well known for instance there were serious debates to know whether playing cards could still harbour king's and queen's faces, and it was decided to leave them be, because common people would trump the cards saying "here's the pig !" instead of King. I see this more as an overzealous act of defiance rather than a shameful attempt at really hiding the text. To leave "Suivant" followed by a void would scream of the removal rather than concealling it.
I think defacing this dial was just one of the many acts of post revolutionary 'political correctness'. Amongst which, a surprising number of pre revolution clocks and watches are to be found with their fleur de lys hour hands clipped, reducing them to mere functionality.
These horology videos are quickly becoming some of my favourites. I'd love to see more of the institute's collection, especially some of the fine, old craftsmanship.
Brady that's not weird, sheep gut is very sturdy and it is still used in making gut strings for instruments. Although it's called cat gut, a cats gut (which is a carnivore) is far to short and not strong enough for making strings. The quality of a sheeps gut depends on the quality of the hay and the herbs they were fed, the climate, etc. and some people (claim that they) can hear a difference depending on that. (No, I don't make gut strings but I use some on my instruments) HTH :-)
It was also used in the fusee mechanisms in watches before the invention of the fusee chain. Restorers will oft replace them with monofilament string of the same weight rather than gut.
I really like those old Magee-Hale automatic parking meters. I didn't even know they existed until I saw a working one in an antique shop.

I'm really liking these videos in other interesting places with other interesting folks, and of course great objects. I always miss Keith, but the variety is very nice.

As an amateur horologist, I absolutely love these videos in particular. Of course I love the Royal Society ones as well...

Objectivity reminds me a bit of Antiques roadshow. Obviously a similar subject, but also similar pacing. My parents used to have it on every night when I was a kid (that’s how I remember it anyway, it was probably just once a week now I think about it). Fond memories.

I know you put a great amount of work into editing these videos ti show the best and most interesting parts. But I'd love to see a live stream run for a couple hours asking about every little bit in that room.
You (And I) could spend hours there. And track every single second on all sorts of interesting clocks.

I keep hoping that you'll do a video on John Harrison's clocks.
So many horrible/wonderful puns come to mind concerning clocks and guts. However, my main takeaway is how almost every available material can have an engineering application, be the solution to some problem. I much prefer this inedible application of sheep entrails over their use in haggis or curry. Though, I must say, it did look a bit like a SlimJim.

Roman numeral 4 is IV. Seeing IIII is infuriating. Why, just why?
Because it's an horological tradition. More importantly, even the Romans were known to use IIII and XXXXX and any combination of "infuriating" numerals from time to time. I think they would know better than you.
That is only modern standard. Go and look at the engravings on the entrances around the coliseum, they are all numbered and they do not follow such a standard format.
