I really cannot recommend strongly enough, the rumble VR videos made by shoeless. The interconnected dance of creation, destruction, movement, momentum, and desperate, defensive maneuvers, make it possibly the most unique experience I’ve ever had the pleasure of having. The fact that you were offense is also your movement, And your defense can quickly become your offense, and any random boulder flying through the air can become skill based mobility to match rocket, jumping in its elegance, damn… I could ramble on forever. Please just check it out.

I never touched splatoon in my life BUT I am aware of what you're talking about. It is a shame I missed out on it as it does provide another unique mechanic in a form of a "reload" and it's also an instance of burrowing not 100% connected to dirt and soil. Thanks for your comment, thats one of the most valueable ones in here!

My favourite unique mechanic is Ori’s bash. It’s a dash, it’s a parry, it’s an offensive ability, it’s a defensive ability, it’s a movement ability, it’s a game changer. Not only is it a perfect ability in a vacuum, the game utilises the bash perfectly. Bash is great.

i’m a huge sucker for games with witch time (dodging right before getting hit slows time) if i see that mechanic in a game, i am immediately intrigued. there’s something so brain tickling about dodging, at the very last second, resulting in the player getting to go ham for an extra few seconds, while the enemy is completely helpless.

I’m probably not the first to say it but my favourite mechanic ever is most likely the ink of Splatoon, having not only your ability to move but your ability to reload be tied to keeping your paint on the ground. Simply being allowed in the enemies base takes just enough time and effort to be interesting.
There’s probably a lot more I could say like sharking and all that but I’m not smart enough to write anymore paragraphs here
Also it’s kinda like burrowing so…

    • @ED-gw9rg
      @ED-gw9rg Місяць тому

Also remember that making space you can "Burrow" through is how you charge up your "Ultimate"/Special Weapons! Combat-focused weapons that don't paint well trade off how many Specials they can get out per match, especially since dying loses half of your Special Gauge. This adds even more risk to those weapons, that also makes them all the more dominating if you manage to outplay or prevent Specials from the enemy team by killing _them_ first!

Most unique ability in gaming history: Rocket Jumping
This one is so obvious I'm surprised it wasn't ever mentioned, practically everyone knows the story behind it and how it changes TF2 and many other games. Started out as a bug, became into its own movement type in games. You have to make the conscious choice every time you do it to look down or to the side, shoot once, lose HP, and get flung in the opposite direction. You can then manipulate your velocity and direction, shoot down at your enemies while jumping, shoot again against a wall to further fling yourself, shoot at where your about to land to re-jump before you hit the ground, or pull out your funny shovel to do a funny. There are different tools in the game that change rocket jumping, many more tricks with it, other classes that utilize it besides Soldier, and is relatively easy to pick up but the skill ceiling is very high. There are tradeoffs for using it, mainly the health hit, ammo usage, and exposing yourself possibly making yourself a skeet shot for the nearby sniper/sentry.
You also didn't talk much about the nuance of Chomper, which I know is a very 🤓thing to say, but Chomper is THE burrower. He deserves respect for the video dedicated to HIS ability and not the talk/footage shown. Chomper's burrow ability is best started around corners where the enemy can't shoot you while you are burrowing, while also helping ambush people because most zombie characters have a movement ability that gets them out of trouble (or imp punt against wall = dead Chomper, or funny barrel). Chomper's burrow degrades slower if you do not move, this is a mechanic I absolutely love because I love letting enemies come to me when I am 100% invisible underground with no noise, and no visual indicator I'm there about to eat you. The burrow is a great tool to get into trouble as well as getting out of trouble, you are impervious to almost everything while underground, use it to retreat. You can use Chomper's burrow while about to fall from a ledge, this makes Chomper look like he is doing a highdive and gives him a bit of a surprise/movement advantage. Chomper has a second burrow ability, making him fast underground but depletes faster, it is dogwater except for specific situations. Chomper's other abilities synergize around his burrow, his goop means an enemy can't move or use abilities, making for an easier meal, however only lasts a few seconds (used best when working with other Chompers, a Chomper's best friend is the one that goops his enemies while he burrows). Chomper's weeds are similar to potato mines, you can deploy max 4, they vary slightly with variants, but their main job is to constrict anyone that steps in them, which allows for a unique and quick burrow eat animation when someone is stuck in them. Chomper's burrow can be hard to spot at times but is very loud, making long burrow trips hard against players not distracted. You really do have to play him like a TF2 Spy, be an opportunist and you have a more fun time doing complex setups and traps. Chomper's most powerful tool is his 3rd person camera, which I know is odd to say but it is true. Use corners and peaks to spot enemies without revealing yourself, play dirty, use the camera to see the exact moment to strike without dying. Chomper's burrow is countered by the Engineer, you should NOT use burrow against Engineer unless its a perfect ambush or you know he doesn't have his sonic grenade/mines ready, or isn't about to hop on his jackhammer, or turret in GW2(Jesus all 3 abilities in GW2 counter Chomper? I guess the drone does too but still). Playing Chomper dumb is frustrating, and your K/D will never go above 1 unless you play him like an an ambush predator. If you know that, then Chomper can be extremely fun and rewarding to play. I also forgot to mention that eating someone makes the person unrevivable, this can only be done by 1 superhero zombie subclass.
EDIT: Looking at the comments I'm glad to see that 3/4 of them are Garden Warfare related, let both games (there is no 3rd game Neighborville is a PSYOP) live on forever as the masterpieces they are.

3 unique mechanics I'd like to mention:
    1. The Unfinished Swan - you shoot paint on the invisible environment to be able to see.
    2. Bulletstorm - the most unique wip in gaming history.
    3. Star citizen - hear me out on this one. In Star citizen when you see anything you want to interact with you just use your normal crosshair. I know it sounds stupid as hell but like I've never seen a game that lets you interact with stuff without pulling you in and making you feel like it is its own cutscenes or something. I think more games should do that and it feels intuitive but i haven't really seen it anywhere else.

I’d say another candidate for burrowing could be the Submarine Monkey from BTD6. In one of its upgrade paths, it gains the “submerge and support” ability where it submerges, turning off all of it offensive abilities. Instead, it switches to a support role, allowing other towers to be able to see and destroy certain bloon types in the Subs radius.
The ability can be toggled, so it’s up to the player to decide whether the Sub should be submerged and assist other towers or stay out and purely focus on attacking.
And yes technically it’s not really “burrowing” since it’s simply diving underwater, not underground, but eh what are ya gonna do

    • @HeySimply
      @HeySimply  2 місяці тому +2

I like this example but I don't think it fits the burrowing criteria enough. Firstly ot submerges otself under water so that's the first issue, but secondly btd6 is a tower defense game and the monkey towers dont have much mobility.
Thanks for mentioning this anyways as really it isnt a bad example or anything, but it's so on the ling that it would be better to pick something safer like some moves in brawlhallah that make the character burrow (i think mirage has that move?)

Rain World. Gourmand’s fatness. Instead of taking fall damage, he deals fall damage by landing on a poor lizor and flattening them. When sliding, you can barrel things out of your way. When rolling, you crash into things for some solid damage. And the Big G’s Exhaustion is a really well done, because he has the highest 1-spear damage in the game, at the cost of only having one spear. The mod “Lore-Accurate Gourmand” makes him the strongest thing in the game, but in vanilla Rain World, he’s the canon. He shoots once then needs a minute to reload.

Geist is another possession game. Float around as a ghost in slow-mo. I think you had to scare/disable guards with guns to posses them. Posses animals for platforming and puzzles. Possess objects to lure/scare people. Explode certain things.
The multiplayer basically boils down to an FPS, but the story mode was fun. I played it on the gamecube so no idea how or if a PC port runs. Could probably emulate it if all else fails.
Edit: In WarCraft 3 Sylvanas (a hero) can charm units and banshees (unit) can posses units but cause it's an RTS all the units are limited in what they do. The dream is to steal a builder/worker from a different race but then you split your income between two tech trees.

Basically it’s a puzzle exploration game where you control a ship on the tv and adjust its characteristics on the gamepad, like you can adjust how heavy it is, whether it’s running an electric or fuel engine, it’s speed, etc to fit the situation. Which this game has many unique scenarios for this mechanic like switching engines to avoid heat detection, or making yourself heavier to sink up or down in water.

Chomper is a lot of fun to play as, but when you play against one, you start to see why the zombies are so afraid of him. The fear you feel when a Chomper burrows straight for you and you spam all your abilities in an attempt to keep from getting eaten ( just to get mid-air burrowed). Every veteran player understands this and has learned to use their abilities to counter Chomper's gameplay. That's what Chomper's burrow ability adds to the game. That sense of fear and panic forces players to waste their abilities to escape or be mindful and save an ability in case a Chomper comes after them.

Essentially each Invisimal can only be found by scanning a real world item that has a specific color (already pretty neat) but then the way you catch them is with this funky looking card thing AFTER you interact with it in some way, usually with your hand or sound.

    Two mechanics:
Played like 5 games with variations of each so they might not be the rarest overall but still highly refreshing to come across.
The first is somewhat in the similar vein of "copying enemy abilitys": Taking direct control over enemys (or other NPCs, even rarer other players) via hacking, hypnosis, possesion, parasite infection, you name it. The biggest difference in execution in between games is the balancing of the delivery method: either its limited uses or limited range with the latter often requiring you to stay a few seconds within that range. Only Driver SanFrancisco throws all use and range limitations out of the window, courtesy of being built ground-up around that mechanic.
The second mechanic I love to see is sticking to walls and ceilings in vehicular combat games. Use any terrain feature as cover. Change plain to attack out of the enemys deadzone or bring an enemy into your firing arc you couldn't hit elsewise. Vertical launch? That is a mere suggestion!
    Edit for grammar

For the "unique mechanic" question, Snake games came to mind. Growing longer over time and perishing if you collide with your own body. While the mechanic itself is very old, as far as I'm aware it's always stayed in its own niche genre due to how specific and defining to the game it is.

For the rounds of questions my fav ability is a movement ability from Destiny, called Blink. You literally teleport around instead of using a double jump or a glide
It has a whole set of mastery to it and it really is fun once you get a feel for it. But you really need that feel in order to get it to work properly
Modtly because it uses the direction of your momentum as well as your speed resulting in a high risk but also very high reward movement ability

I think the GLOO Cannon from Prey (2017) is very unique.
A mobility, utility, and combat tool. Able to turn most sheer walls into climbable paths. Can get rid of fire and electrical hazards. And can stun enemies. Also blocks off paths in some areas (not sure this is viable or possible for the player).

Slowing down time is one thing, but time manipulation in general is one of the better examples of being specific enough to be a generally interesting concept, while still being broad enough to allow unique individual implementation. In this case i'm going to focus on specifically rewinding.
1:Tears of the Kingdom. The rewind ability pretty much sums up all the typical elements of rewinding in a game: utility of fixing a mistake, reversing the movement of object allowing a different direction of motion, and even allowing you to make on-demand platforms through moving objects manually. It's also noticeable as a combat tool as it can be used to "reflect" projectiles back at enemies, or even re-use your own projectiles(most notably boomerangs) to double their effectiveness.(Even if it was a missed opportunity to allow rewinding enemies)
2:Blades of time. The primary mechanic of the game is rewinding time around you, and creating a copy that mimics your exact actions until you both return to the "present". This has a rather a generous cooldown and resource as well, so it's quite easy to have a small army of phantoms ganging up on your enemies(which is even expected to be done with some enemies). This game hasn't aged too well, but overall this is probably my favorite implementation of rewinding time around you in a game focused on real-time combat.
3:Chris tales. I'm kind of surprised the concept of literally rewinding a specific character back a turn doesn't come up more often in turn-based combat. Useful for the usual things like resource management and cleansing, but the fact it's turn-based puts greater emphasis and capability to rewind a target in order to do a "big round" two turns in a row. It can similarly be used to revert a "big round" an enemy has done(whether by reverting yourself or the enemy). There's actually quite a few examples of time manipulation in this game, even if they're individually not the best implementation of it.
Rewinding can be done in puzzles, combat, real-time, and turn-based alike;and the nature of those games allow for different interpretations of how rewind effects the world. I'm not sure if that makes it more "creative" then Burrowing as a mechanic, but I do think it's fits alongside as a competitor(and that's before talking about time manipulation as a whole)

My choice for most unique ability is time travel. Specifically the type used in the Titanfall 2 mission "Cause and Effect". Being able to choose when to hop back and forth through 2 different points in time during your run through of the mission is something i haven't really seen anywhere else. The closest I've seen is some games that have the temporal switch happen from set locations or after making progress through the mission. The choice given to the player is what makes it truly unique to me.

Zerg in Starcraft have another way of using burrowing: after researching an upgrade, every single Zerg ground unit can burrow for as long as they want to become cloaked(invisible to most enemy units) but immobile with less vision. This turns it into a powerful ambush tool, provided your opponent doesn't make good use of detection. Two specific units, their ground-to-ground brawler and their summoner/manipulator spellcaster, can also move while burrowed at a reduced speed(and the caster can cast some abilities), turning it into a hit-and-run tool as well. Their unique suicide explosion unit can also explode straight from the ground, making them even deadlier in ambushes.
Sadly this doesn't see much use the player vs player modes as most players bring detecting units with them everywhere, but I still think it's really neat.

In my opinion the most unique mechanic in video games are stances, like in Ghost of Tsushima, Udyr and Aphelios from League, and many fighting game characters like Kagura from Blazblue. Being able to swap between different bonuses / abilities depending on the situtation adds so much depth to combat because it forces the player to think about what they need at what time and makes for some of the best and most engaging combat in video games.
The most creative use of this system that I've seen is in Lucah: born of a dream, a very unique and cryptic soulslike. The game gives you two stances, each with it's own light, heavy, and raged attack, and throughout the game you collect attacks with different properties that can be put into any slot, so you have six different attacks to work with at any time and weaving between them gives you different combos. It's the most flexible combat system I've ever seen and you can easily spend hours just testing different combinations.

A simple answer but rare. The ability to 1st POV melee assassination in some Battlefield games, and have unique one based on where you were looking, weapon, positions, etc. is less of an ability and more of a feature, but when I have to melee directly behind someone for a 3rd POV kill and it does not work, I count it as an ability.

I was gonna say that Splatoon's ink mechanic is the most unique and interesting mechanic in recent memory, but someone else already mentioned it. So instead I'm gonna mention the game Rivals of Aether, a fighting game.
There are plenty of characters with really interesting mechanics, but my pick goes to the Forsburn and his smoke.
As the name suggests, this essentially just creates a smokescreen, which you can use to hide in. It doesn't hurt the enemy, and the enemy can attack it to clear it. It sounds simple, but the depth comes from how it interacts with the other tools of the character.
You also have an ability that creates a clone, controlled by an AI, whose behaviour you have some control over. It can't attack, but it's useful for mixing up opponents.
You're a melee focused character who can struggle to close the distance, but you can also absorb the smoke to charge a meter and gain other powerful options: a strong close-range finisher, an even bigger smoke burst that covers half the screen, or an empowered clone that can attack or be detonated.
Fianlly, you can teleport to wherever there is smoke silently and be immediately actionable afterwards, and you can create clones silently within the smoke.
It's the first time I've seen a stealth mechanic in a fighting game. It allows for so many mindgames, it's intuitive and it makes you feel like a sneaky bastard who can end the match in a few combos.
Every character in this game has some ability that allows for passive control over the stage and interacts in weird and useful ways with the other moves in their kits, and that's just my personal pick, not even my favorite.

I’d say one of the most unique abilities in gaming is Wrecking Ball’s grappling hook from Overwatch. Not only does it function as a grappling hook, but it makes you into a physics object. Wrecking Ball plays moves, and even plays, so different from every other character just because of this one ability. Also yes, I’m aware that Overwatch sucks, but I literally only like it because of Wrecking Ball
