I think he is the best, however it would be wrong to say that. Fan zhen dong alone has several areas where he's better, physicality just being a huge one.
@@MrVibhas With all due respect, Ma Long has beaten Fan Zhendong, far more often. Than Fan has beaten him. Fan has a more powerful backhand. That's it. As Adam correctly mentions in the olympic final match commentary, Ma Long absolutely dominates in strategy and game "iq". He predicts every move of every opponent while coming up with insanely effective and creative plans in his games, often within split seconds.
Am partial to Waldner being his countryman, but Ma Long is something else. Maybe it isn't even important who the GOAT is, maybe it's just cool to watch these tabletennis legends play and compete, and enjoy their skill.
Waldner played when there were many countries with good TT programs. No it's only Germany,a second class power, and neophyte Japan.Even the Chinese squad is far smaller.

Best of all times (top 5) Skill based: 1. Ma long 2. Fan zhendong/Zhang jike 3. Fan zhendong/Zhang jike 4. Wang Chuqin/Ma lin 5. Liang jinkun/Wang hao/Wang liqin (Ugh this list is very controversial however I am very confident of the first 3 but after that there are so many things to consider so 4 and 5 are opinion based however 1-3 I can give a thorough explanation as to why those 3 are the pinnacle of table tennis technique) Titles: 1. Ma long 2. Waldner 3. Zhang jike 4. Liu Guoliang 5. Kong linghui (There’s really no argument here since this list has the top 5 males players of all time who won the most olympics, WTTC and World Cup titles) SO these 2 lists clearly show why ma long is the GOAT of this sport and the fact that Waldner fanboys need to shut up since Waldner doesn’t compare to ma long is skills nor titles. (No disrespect to the legend though!)
There is a point in the team event of the Olympics between Ma Long and Aruna that passed under the radar. You see that point and you will have no doubts that this guy is real GOAT 🐐
Total idol, I love Ma Long and the greatest thing is that he has established the top level on our days but in the future that level will be the base for new athletes, can´t wait to watch the future of TT with this man (and many others) as coach!
Ma long surely doesn't have an explosive backhand like Fan zhengdong or Zhang zike as well, but the really scary thing about Ma long is in his intelligence. He finds the opponents' weaknesses so well, especially when he ever met that apponent before. And even if the opponent prepared well, Ma long is able to cover almost every player only with his pure strength.. This is why Ma long is soooo tough to win over to any player :)
It’s the tactical game and the mental game that makes him so tough to beat. Consider Fan Zhendong for example, he hasn’t won many of the major international tournaments and the Olympics even though his technique for the Backhand is so explosive and powerful and his physical fitness level is insane. But Ma Long win against him in the most crucial points over his experience over big tournaments , mental toughness and tactically always keeping one step ahead of the opponent
Zhang Jike was quite a tactician too, and I think he and Ma were quite equal at strategy. The only thing that stopped Zhang from becoming GOAT are injuries
Ma Long, the living legend, God of table tennis has clearly over taken Waldner with second olympic single's gold in Tokyo becoming all time great of the quickest game on the planet
I used to think Waldner was goat and obviously he is still an all time legend, but ma long has truly proven himself. If he gets another olympic gold there will absolutely be no question in anyones mind
There is already no question, he has everything going for him, i can understand if u like waldner to say for "me" he is the best, but stats don't lie and MaLong has them all
I love the WTT format, I think the people complaining about the new format are just not used to it yet. I believe that WTT looks much more appealing and less boring especially for someone who's new or does not know much about the sport. Maybe more game stats like ball positions or spin and speed of players' shot would be a great addition for the future events.
Agree 100% with you on the camera angle. The side-on angle does give you a flavour for how fast the ball's actually travelling, but it's a bit tough to really understand the point. You get no insight on how the players move each other around. The diagonal angle, when reasonably low, is just perfect. The side-on angle, although a tad lower than the one they had at Macao, can be used for replays.
I like the side view angle of the camera the most, because I can clearly see their right distances when they're hitting the ball, most especially the forehand. Watching it on the diagonal is also a great camera angle to watch because you can also see much better how high the ball bounces. In watching game replays, Would be very nice if we can select either one, would truly help in studying games, especially their techniques and timing of shots
@@NinjaWarriorFanclub I created videos about Tv Shows but didnt want to go on with that content so I deleted everything and most of the subscribers are left 😅
The new side angle is better than the old angle, but the 45 degree angle is the best imo. The whole event was awesome! Love the changes! Ma Long is the goat for sure.
Ma Long it is, No ZJK, No JOW, Ma Long, only ever player to win 2 olympic gold medals consecutively, only player to ever achieve a DOUBLE grand slam, like wth..... ✌️
Ma Lin is my favorite. His variation on timing is fun to watch. However, if we're talking about the best, Ma Long hands down. He's accomplished too much to not be.
I think corner to corner gives a lot more info in table tennis than traditional lawn tennis. Switching in between is good but corner to corner should be norm.
Ma Long doesn't have 1 thing that's the strongest, Ma Long doesn't have Ryu Seung Min's footwork ,Waldner and Xu xin's touch, Liu Guoliang's serves, Zhang Jike and Fan ZD's backhand and physique, Ma Lin and Wang liqin's forehand power, Lin Gaoyuan's swing speed. Nothing stands out to be the strongest, but he has them all and every 1 of his techniques is among the few best in the world, maybe that just makes him a man of no speciality and a man with all specialities. also, similar to Zhang Yining, Ma Long truly have no obvious weaknesses in all aspects of his game, his game is well balanced, it's just rare. that's the toughest kind of opponent to overcome.
he does have the strongest forehand. and most successful chop blocks in competitive matches. his forehand is not as fast as ryu seung min. but considering consistency, techniques and overall power. he by miles and miles have the strongest forehand.
Great video! Ma Long is a BEAST! Hard to choose between him and JO though. Different eras! I'm just happy to have been around to watch them both. Especially JO Waldner since I'm a Swede of course! :)
Waldner would be CRUSHED by many players of today, not only MaLong. Timo, Koki, Fan, all would destroy Waldner. He was good for his era, but you cannot compare the techique and style with what is played today. MaLong IS THE BEST OF ALL TIME because he is the best in the best era of table tennis, with the fastest balls, the spinniest balls, the fastest blades and best players. The speed they play today is beyond everything they played back in the day.
Waldner was doing well without having all the technologies equipment they have now.He was ahead of everybody else in his era and was doing a lot of tricks shots way in advance. He set the tone for new generations. He is in my opinion the 🐐 goat.
u r blinded by your emotions. facts hit hard. Waldner was really overrated due to his fancy blocks. he was never in a slight way possible dominant in his era like ma long does. Waldner lost to so many players in his time. and was not consistent. how many times he won wttc and Olympics??? and in terms of speed, techniques involved and power, table tennis has evolved and became much more faster, difficult, competitive and fitness demanding. just like every sports does. its much more complicated and sophisticated now. and ma long beats Waldner in every department possible. SPEED, TECHNIQUES, POWER, ATHLETICISM, AGILITY, FOOTWORK, etc. okay, lets put all the things aside. Malong surpassed every players by miles and miles in real statistics. the most medals won. world championship titles. Olympics. ofcourse people can have their opinions, but its official and factual now that he is the G O A T
@@seeker3983 Ma Long is pusher smasher. And how has TT evolved when no1 player is Fan Zhendong,a fat short guy?If Waldner played against weaklings like Mizutani he would have won alot more.Zhang JIke made to the final at the Olympics in 2016 beating only a geriatric Samsonov talk about difficulty...
Camera angle should be 45 degree . 45 degree angle camera is best. And in 2019 , table tennis was seen by more than 1 billion TV viewers thatwise I think table tennis level take one step forward as coco cola and many big brands are gonna sponser table tennis in upcoming 2021 tournaments. And its expanded to around 3-5 million dollars per event and all other information is on the ittf and wtt websites. If you wanna know more go check out these websites.
Obviously when you are representing your country you would give it everything you had to win. Waldner played against the best Chinese teams for generations and won on most occasions, an incredible feat regardless of his personable achievements. What would be more important to you representing your country or your own personal gain? Sometimes I shut my eyes and think how amazing this man was to maintain a high level of endeavor for so long. This feat alone gives him a slight edge over Ma Long who has my upmost respect.
This is fair enough, even for me as a Chinese. I don't know much abt the history, but I know how hard it is to represent China in an international table tennis game. You just have too many beasts to beat before you can stand there. If Waldner beat several Chinese teams, he earns the title already.
A slight edge?Waldner had the whole CNT devising tactics to beat him for decades, also Korea and Europe were super strong.Do you think Ma Long would have survived more than 2 years if FZD was allowed to target him?Other than his short game(and I mean pushing) nothing stands out and he had to train it because he lost to veterans like Samsonov/Boll in rallies.Ma Lin for that matter is much more impressive.
Rear corner angle is best to follow the ball. Also, color and lighting scheme were excellent for ball visibility. Olympic Committee should take heed. Congratulations!
I remember they aired olympic trial which was actually more exciting to watch compare to the actual olympic game consider the potential micromanagement exists in olympics of maximizing the chance to secure gold medal for team china.
Side camera angle is not good. 45° looks okay but it has to be a bit lower to see the arc and bounce of the ball. ITTF should add low 45° angle to their World Tour preliminary round matches as the position of camera in preliminary rounds is not pleasing to watch. Although, quite happy with how ITTF has broadcasted events (camera angle, commentary, professional approach etc) in recent years.
Your GOAT question sent me to wikipedia and down a rabbit hole. Looking at the lists of past world champions there is one fact in particular jumps out at you. From its inception in 1926 up until 1935 the world championship (all competitions but especially the singles) were dominated by one country - Hungary (Kingdom of Hungray). This is a sports article waiting to be written by somebody - before it is lost to living memory. I am intrigued how Hungray came to be so dominant for so long. Did they invent the game or something? Another fun fact I stumbled upon - Fred Perry won the world championship one year.
I think Ma Long and Fan Zhendong are the best players of all time, so far. Waldner and Persson were great in their time, but the sport has evolved and the speed and technique is higher compared to twenty years ago...
Yes there are was very different, even some of the rules (like the ball and the service rules). I dont think waldner's playstyle would be as effective in this era, just my opinion though, I cant say for sure
@@gab5012 why don't u think that if Waldner plays now, he would adjust his playstyle for nowadays needs. for me, important criteria is how much he was great in their time and his peak and how other plays feel against him? and how he has ability and mental strength for example timo boll told in interview that his toughest opponent was Waldner and Timo play against Wang Liqin, ZJK and Ma Long at their peak time and not Waldner's real peak time with aspect of success, yes Ma Long is the greatest (most successful), but the greatest player ever?... need to analyze more with all parameters

His attacks are relentless, brutal and powerful, so he does not have to defend or anything
I think he is the best, however it would be wrong to say that.
Fan zhen dong alone has several areas where he's better, physicality just being a huge one.
@@MrVibhas Yes, players like Dima and FZD have more powerful backhands (not saying more effective, but at least more powerful)
@@MrVibhas With all due respect, Ma Long has beaten Fan Zhendong, far more often. Than Fan has beaten him. Fan has a more powerful backhand. That's it. Ma Long has better serves, footwork, forehand, service return, accuracy, more heart, more experience, etc. I respect your opinion. But Ma Long is the greatest to ever play this sport. When Fan accomplishes, what Ma Long has. Then we'll talk. Bigger isn't always better.
Peace!
Fan Zhendong is Lebron James... But Ma Long, is Michael Jordan!
For the WTT , I'm not so sure about the sudden death and the 5 points thing but the new camera angles are indeed revolutionary, game changer for me.
W09
you cannot compare Waldner and Ma Long bcos they played in different eras - just enjoy their skills and different styles
Waldner played when there were many countries with good TT programs. No it's only Germany,a second class power, and neophyte Japan.Even the Chinese squad is far smaller.
Ma Long is the greatest. First person who won 2x Olympics gold consecutively! OP!
@Keith Lin ye. Zhang is another GOAT!!!
@Keith Lin yeah but that’s why she is the goat of women
And Here I was thinking he was gonna retire after that knee injury, boy I was dumb.
Oh boy... this aged like fine wine ....
The fact that I don't see jokes about his name makes me feel immature.
When I saw this title the first thing that came to my mind was Mike oxlong
he's got a Longer one than me that's for sure
Ma Long Vs Wang Hao
Ma longer
Ma long shlong
thanks for this video ! the commentary, video editing, and transition is really good. it made me understand WTT, how Ma Long is the best, and keep me hooked until the end of the video.
3:53 - YES!! It was so much fun to see ppl talking about Xu Xin after he lost to the "english name" player hahahahah
It's a subtle but really cool way to make the sport more interesting and popular
He is very very very good
i loved the color of the Table, the side angle as it makes the viewer understand the movement of the players and above all the price money.
Dan I would love if you keep making videos like this
Perhaps a top 5 or 10 all time ranking based on ur opinion etc
Hey yes will try to do more of these :) Good shout on this video idea!
Best of all times (top 5)
Skill based:
1. Ma long
2. Fan zhendong/Zhang jike
3. Fan zhendong/Zhang jike
4. Wang Chuqin/Ma lin
5. Liang jinkun/Wang hao/Wang liqin
(Ugh this list is very controversial however I am very confident of the first 3 but after that there are so many things to consider so 4 and 5 are opinion based however 1-3 I can give a thorough explanation as to why those 3 are the pinnacle of table tennis technique)
Titles:
1. Ma long
2. Waldner
3. Zhang jike
4. Liu Guoliang
5. Kong linghui
(There’s really no argument here since this list has the top 5 males players of all time who won the most olympics, WTTC and World Cup titles)
SO
these 2 lists clearly show why ma long is the GOAT of this sport and the fact that Waldner fanboys need to shut up since Waldner doesn’t compare to ma long is skills nor titles. (No disrespect to the legend though!)
You can tell this is a promotion video for WTT, but I thoroughly agree with what you said about Ma Long. GOAT.
There is a point in the team event of the Olympics between Ma Long and Aruna that passed under the radar. You see that point and you will have no doubts that this guy is real GOAT 🐐
Should provide us a link to the vid and time stamp.

Agree
I used to think Waldner was goat and obviously he is still an all time legend, but ma long has truly proven himself. If he gets another olympic gold there will absolutely be no question in anyones mind
There is already no question, he has everything going for him, i can understand if u like waldner to say for "me" he is the best, but stats don't lie and MaLong has them all
He just got one in Tokyo, beating Fan Zhengdong the ranked number 1!
@@SimeonYoung Rio, Tokyo. world championship titles how many times???
Against zero competition. Fat boy Fan Zhendong is going to destroy his records with that joke competition.
I love the WTT format, I think the people complaining about the new format are just not used to it yet. I believe that WTT looks much more appealing and less boring especially for someone who's new or does not know much about the sport. Maybe more game stats like ball positions or spin and speed of players' shot would be a great addition for the future events.
Ma Long on his way to win 2nd gold medal in olympics men’s singles tt atm
Agree 100% with you on the camera angle. The side-on angle does give you a flavour for how fast the ball's actually travelling, but it's a bit tough to really understand the point. You get no insight on how the players move each other around. The diagonal angle, when reasonably low, is just perfect. The side-on angle, although a tad lower than the one they had at Macao, can be used for replays.
Yes, Ma Long in my opinion is the GOAT.
I prefer the side view more than the old behind the player view
not an opinion anymore. its a fact. u can't Deny statistics. rest are opinions
I agree, Ma Long is the GOAT, but I believe Dan Ives' forehand rivals the dragon's hahahah
_Uh-huh...._
LOVE WATCHING MA LONG & ZHANG JIKE
I like the side view angle of the camera the most, because I can clearly see their right distances when they're hitting the ball, most especially the forehand.
Watching it on the diagonal is also a great camera angle to watch because you can also see much better how high the ball bounces. In watching game replays, Would be very nice if we can select either one, would truly help in studying games, especially their techniques and timing of shots

I like the side view. Absolutely a better perspective!!!
To me it`s Ma Lin, he always surprised with impossible counterattacks and has his own signature style of playing table tennis
Ma Lin is my favorite. His variation on timing is fun to watch. However, if we're talking about the best, Ma Long hands down. He's accomplished too much to not be.
U cannot be serious... There's no way anyone could rate Ma Lin as the greatest tt player of all time.
By achievements ma long.. most pro tours won, grand slam champion.
even fan zhendong is better than ma Lin...the only similar styles in terms of the greatesth the history was Jan ove waldner.
ma lin is great, but ma lin- ma long head 2 head matches is like 31-7 for ma long lmao
Not sure why this is showing up in my recommended. But I love it!! Scary how the algos can read your mind.
Ma Long Is the real champion! 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏 Jaminan mutu 🏓🏓🏓
And he successfully defense his Olympic men single gold medal.

Well played Sharath against the GOAT today🔥🔥.....long way to go

I think corner to corner gives a lot more info in table tennis than traditional lawn tennis. Switching in between is good but corner to corner should be norm.
Have I been baited into the best #wtt advert. I even think it’s good now. Dan’s need to be be getting bank for this mega business brain
God, 5 months ago I fell in love with table tennis. I'm 30yo, I will always be an amateur, but I love it.
Ma Long doesn't have 1 thing that's the strongest,
Ma Long doesn't have Ryu Seung Min's footwork ,Waldner and Xu xin's touch, Liu Guoliang's serves, Zhang Jike and Fan ZD's backhand and physique, Ma Lin and Wang liqin's forehand power, Lin Gaoyuan's swing speed.
Coz their all from Liaoning province.
he does have the strongest forehand. and most successful chop blocks in competitive matches. his forehand is not as fast as ryu seung min. but considering consistency, techniques and overall power. he by miles and miles have the strongest forehand.
Great video! Ma Long is a BEAST! Hard to choose between him and JO though. Different eras! I'm just happy to have been around to watch them both. Especially JO Waldner since I'm a Swede of course! :)
Waldner is the number 1 outside of China in many Chinese’s mind I can tell you
now with another gold he is 100% the goat
Side angle is soo good. Really shows just how crazy day they actually move
If Ma Long versed himself it would be a match of who dies first
And as of 31st July, 2021, he is the only Olympian to win two golds back to back in table tennis.
His secret is his aggression. He always plays aggressively. Give him a 0.001% chance and he will go for it
Absolutely agree about the camera angle. Side angle view is ok, but it should be as an additional option. The main camera should be from behind.
Agree
Had to come check him out after his fanatic match for gold this year
Waldner was doing well without having all the technologies equipment they have now.He was ahead of everybody else in his era and was doing a lot of tricks shots way in advance.
National tt tournaments in china is actually tougher than any international events😂😂
I remember they aired olympic trial which was actually more exciting to watch compare to the actual olympic game consider the potential micromanagement exists in olympics of maximizing the chance to secure gold medal for team china.
I mean chinese players have special techniqes (i meant fully chinese players not Halfs like me) which makes the game easier.
The messi of table tennis
Your GOAT question sent me to wikipedia and down a rabbit hole. Looking at the lists of past world champions there is one fact in particular jumps out at you. From its inception in 1926 up until 1935 the world championship (all competitions but especially the singles) were dominated by one country - Hungary (Kingdom of Hungray). This is a sports article waiting to be written by somebody - before it is lost to living memory. I am intrigued how Hungray came to be so dominant for so long. Did they invent the game or something?
Another fun fact I stumbled upon - Fred Perry won the world championship one year.
Yes definitely the G.O.A.T
He has won the Olympic champion many times because of the table tennis champions all over the world.
@@gab5012 why don't u think that if Waldner plays now, he would adjust his playstyle for nowadays needs.
for me, important criteria is how much he was great in their time and his peak and how other plays feel against him? and how he has ability and mental strength
for example timo boll told in interview that his toughest opponent was Waldner and Timo play against Wang Liqin, ZJK and Ma Long at their peak time and not Waldner's real peak time
with aspect of success, yes Ma Long is the greatest (most successful), but the greatest player ever?... need to analyze more with all parameters
@@cenktekin7175 Ma Long achieved more in a shorter career so far and a harder era
@@cenktekin7175 We can't assume what adjustments Waldner would make for this age
@@gab5012 harder era, i am not much sure, before poly-ball he was behind of ZJK and Wang Hao and almost equal with XX.
He adjusted himself for poly-era perfectly,
XX get destroyed with poly-ball, ZJK has lack of motivation, and new players for poly-era like tomokazu need time
I don't mean Ma Long is not best; he is one of the greatest, maybe the greatest and my favorite player after WLQ, but statistics is a very strong parameter but not only the parameter
The greatest of all time, undisputed Ma Long
If anyone could win 2 Olympic Gold medals, it would be Ma Long...
hmm.... maybe

Ma Long is the GOAT, no doubt !
Wow the black table looks awesome 👏🏼

You’re one of them
Yeah, i can win Ma Long with my left hand
Ma Long is unquestionable
9:16 I like this angle but the camera should be a little lower so you can see the speed and arc of the ball better
I remember watching Ma Long in 2011, 2012 he was an elite player then. Damn he's dominant.
i see a lot of salty people who can't acknowledge that ma long is the GOAT.
Because he isn’t. He’s the best of the last decade but people are too quick to give current athletes the “GOAT” title; look at TT history. JO was at the top for 80s, 90s and 2000s
@@paulanthony1689 JO might've been more dominant against the players during his years. Ma Long has won every major title, has the longest unbeaten streak in history and is the only player in history to have a winning ratio against every player he has ever competed against.
@@paulanthony1689 Are you really comparing TT back then and TT now? How can one do that? It's obvious that training, nutrition and competition is getting better and better with every passing year, not to mention a decade. Waldner wouldn't stand a chance to first five Chinese players
@@Collector731 Totally agreed. Those who are going for Waldner have been sleeping after his time because of which they have no idea on how fierce the players of today are. The prime Waldner would even be lucky to win a set against prime top 5 Chinese players of today. I mean it seriously.
@@paulanthony1689 I’m really sorry to know how outdated your knowledge on table tennis is. Waldner’s speed and footwork is 10 times slower than those of top 10 Chinese players of today. I dont know if the 45 degree angle is better, but I definitely liked the side angle and much more than the old one for sure.
I started playing competitively just around Waldner first world finals since then was one of my favorite by early nineties for me he is was the GOAT but since 2017 is the new GOAT is Ma Long.. forget style because that is subjective.. Ma Long is the most dominant international player in the modern period of the sport.. he has gained the mental fortitude he was missing prior 2014..he has able to win as a counter puncher or as a all out attacker..there is no safe place on the table from him taking advantage during a point.. Ma Long is the GOAT if you understand the game at a good level and you are able to put aside your sentimental felling for Waldner like I did.
@@dwbyfield I think you replied to the wrong person but I agree 😛
Jan-Ove Waldner
No just no
Diagonal angle is best.. one can clearly see players standing position and also ball height.. it serves both purpose!
In my opinion is Waldner for ever the best
Camera should be positioned so that crossed corners form a vertical line, centered in the screen, and the height should be above the heads of the players, but not that much higher. Then you can have a better look at the ball's trajectory.
Something like 7:42 or 9:15
Ma long > Wang liqin > Zhang Jike - My favs
He plays as safely as he can with his backhand and once he finds his chance? Killer forehand boom💥
I don't know, some of those forehands would not be safe for any other player.
