@@jakob1713 I didn't watch Frieren (even though I heard about it a lot), but I watched Violet Evergarden, and oh boy... Frieren Episode 21: You did it man, the MUSIC when Frieren broken the barrier brought CHILL to my spine, I RE-WATCHED & LISTENED to that scene at least TEN TIMES. As good as it gets. Evan... my inspiration...I'm a pianist, and I started writing orchestral music dreaming some japanese animation studios notice me... It's thanks to his music in Violet Evergarden that i've chosen my path...Thank you from my heart Evan, and thank you Gavin for this beautiful interview.
@@kausthita11Hello again, and sorry for being late, I was thinking about your message for all this time:) I spent the last months writing a lot of music, and today I decided to finally open my own youtube channel :)
I was so amazed when finding out this non-japanese composer when watching the violet evergarden. The sound track truly is a masterpiece. Thanks for this cool interview Gavin!
Once I heard Evan Calls “The Voice in My Heart” “The Ultimate Price” “Rust” “Across the Violet Sky” I instantly became a fan of his works. This genre of music hits my craving in the right spot and I can’t wait to see what else he can produce in the near future! I was saddened once Violet Evergarden finished airing, doubting if anything will reach that level of beauty ever again. 6 years later, Frieren Beyond Journey’s end appears and it matches what I wanted in a fantasy anime perfectly. ❤
so thrilled to see one of my favorite composers getting interviewed!!! I've been waiting to hear about his thought process for so long, thank you for making this!
Evan Call the 🐐 Violet Evergarden's OST is very touching and makes me tear up every time even on my 10th rewatch. Good little piece of an interview here Gavin 👍
Violet Evergarden came out at pretty much the exact right time to give me something to cope through the death of my brother, and the music in particular was a huge part of that. I watched, and then rewatched the anime a few times, and I'd often be listening to the Violet Evergarden OST during that time. A Doll's Beginning, Violet's Letter, Violet Snow, and The Love That Binds Us are some of my favourites from that soundtrack. Please pass my thanks onto Evan, if you could.
Awesome! I absolutely love Evans's music, and Frieren is an amazing show. The score for Violet Evergarden is one of my top favorite anime scores. Looking forward to taking the course as I find myself very influenced by many Japanese composers. It'd be awesome if you could get an interview with Kenichirou Suehiro (Shadow's House) Junichi Nakatsuru (SoulCalibur) or the great Yuki Kajiura (Fate/Zero)
As I was learning more about his life as a composer, it filled me with assurance that it’s never too late to start composing or to get into music. I may have the basics down for music, but I’m studying accounting as an undergrad and have slowly been parting from my love for music. However every time I listen to his works (and that of Yoshiaki Hujisawa), I get the sudden urge to go back to that world of music.
oh my goodness, I just learned about him recently, because the Frieren atmosphere just really blew me away, I really really want to listen to the ost as soon as possible, thank you for this interview!
Gavin, I wanted to say thank you for interviewing Evan Call to get a better perspective on his life and work in Japan. I enjoyed listening to his anime soundtracks when I felt down or bored. 😁
I think Evan really excels the most in his arrangement and instrumentation. He chooses interesting colors to paint with and makes sure they mesh well. I want to hear/find out if he’s made any memorable character motifs. I don’t know his music well but I think if he can do that well too, he’ll be a composer who’s work I’ll follow.
I keep Violet soundtrack in background all the time when I work it's like a warm blanket that helps me go through the day. I'm really looking foreword to listen to Frieren's one. Thank you for your amazing composition!
Been a fan of Evan Call since I heard Violet Evergarden's OSTs. He's been one of my favorite composers along with my favorite show. And the release of Frieren recently just makes my respect for him better. I am glad you were able to get to interview him. Great video
I always wanted to see how Evan Call was like. There ain't a lot of westerners doing soundtrack for anime but once I watched Violet Evergarden I was completely blown away by its sound. It's really interesting to know how the pieces of music are briefed into him with those broad concepts like the 'existence as existence' thing, but it worked cause every song in Automemories is a feeling almost, kinda like Violet herself discovers what feelings truly are. The soundtrack almost breeds such feelings into you slowly. Most importantly, you mentioned woodwind as an instrument, but I'd also add the harp into the mix cause their combination made the soundtrack so distinct from everything I've seen from anime, film, gaming, anything. It's gentle, soft AND innocent at the same time. I really can't stress enough how Violet's track is amazing, for me it had as much weight to the story as the script itself lmao. Never Coming Back, The Ultimate Price and Across the Violet Sky are masterpieces.
Yo Evan, Big fan here and your work in Frieren was one of best. I really love how you depict fantasy in your music :) When i think of fantasy i imagine your music in the background. Shout out to Made in Abyss composer, pretty similar imo.
I bought the Violet Evergarden CD when it came out and when I heard he made the music for Frieren, I was there for it. Can't wait for the full Cd to come out.
i'm a huge rock metal fan but boy, when i heard sincerely i couldn't help but tear up a little, damn ninjas cutting onions smh , this guy is a freaking genius
Evan Calls music elevates Frieren into grand fantasy movie spheres! But there ist still room for even more colour with Beyond Journeys End, I hope he will do the other parts.
his music is the reason for me to play piano, When I was in elementary school, my neighbor had a keyboard that i play often. It's just, the piano broke when i got to middle school. In middle school i was more interested in traditional music and my parents are very supportive about it. and when i go to high school, my friend introduce me to anime world, and i think anime music is perfect match for piano, so i started to learn again, i used fl studio, and just clicking my finger on everything, when violet evergarden came i ask for a piano to my parents but they did not support it, until i finish school and can buy piano (just a 150 dollars piano) but the first song that i learn is ""Be Free", now i can play "Theme of Violet Evergarden" and the piano part of "Mirai no Hito e". My dream is to be able to play Evan Call score beautifuly
First know him in Josee the Tiger and the Fish, the soundtrack are so beautifully done, give me the vibe of Ghibli's film. I haven't watched Frieren and Violet Evergarden, I think I will love it too
Evan Call also who made BGM for movie anime "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish" in 2020 and "My Happy Marriage" in this year too. Thanks you so much for your time to interviewing him. Violet Evergarden makes his name getting much more attention. It's not too late to stan him and support him! 🫶

Hi Gavin, this is the first video I'm watching from your channel, but I have watched Ryan Leach for quite some time now, and I'm excited to buy the course you two have put up! I have a bit of classical music background, but I'd still like to know how much I need to know music-wise and technology-wise before I enroll the course. Do I need any specific knowledge or software prior or just basic knowledge would be good enough? (e.g. I haven't tried using music sheet software)
Welcome to the channel! Good question. I would say basic knowledge is sufficient. There aren’t necessarily technology requirements, but you’ll need to have some sheet music editor software to complete the assignments. Musescore is free, and a great place to start. Hope to see you in the course soon!
“I couldn’t immediately find work of course”. I like Evan, but we must have way different concepts of “immediately”… According to his wiki, he came to Japan and after only three months (that’s just 12 weeks!) he gets a job where he can help arrange for a Nana Mizuki song and work on Symphogear G 😂 as a foreigner, in Japan. His good skill aside, that’s like ridiculously lucky or… I don’t have a really good word for it. Fortunate I guess? I hope he still treats his roommate nice.
Frieren's soundtrack was something that could rival Hans Zimmer or Hiroyuki Sawano. In my opinion, of course. And no, I'm not saying anything is better than the other. Just clearing that one up ahead of time.
