  • If you've ever wondered what the real-life stories of servants shown in dramas like Downton Abbey are, you'll be fascinated by the next in our 1900s series 'Lives in Service". Wentworth Wooodhouse was, of course, much larger and grander than "Downton", with a greater number of staff. In this episode, we meet Bonnie William Willson, the Steward's Room Boy- the youngest member of the live-in staff in 1911. We see him in his first few days at the House as he trains to become a Footman - getting lost in the labyrinth of corridors and cellars, trying to stay on the best side of the First Footman, and taking the Countess' disobedient dog for walks. It's a hard life when EVERYONE at the Big House has a job for you! But at least someone in the kitchens has a soft spot for him- the second Kitchen maid, Edith Mason.
Our videos are entirely made by volunteers- including our brilliant and intrepid actors. We're very proud of them. Look out this time for a cameo voice appearance from one of our more famous volunteers- a certain ex-England Rugby Captain, once known as "Burglar Bill".
    Don't miss earlier episodes:
Edgar Volan: Groom of Chambers (Butler) • The Groom of Chambers:...
Kate White: Head Housemaid • The Head Housemaid: Th...
White Gloves to Flying Machines: The Life of Footman Oscar John Snelling • White Gloves to Flying...
And please subscribe to our UA-cam channel so that you'll receive alerts for all of our new content, including new episodes in the Lives in Service series: Episode 5: Ernest Whitworth: the Groom and Episode 6: Battery Sergeant Major Tom Rishworth of the Royal Horse Artillery: the Stud and Hunt Groom.
If you have a family member who worked at Wentworth Woodhouse, and have stories or pictures to share, we'd love to hear from you!

Fascinating story, more like this please. I like the lad who played William, a typical Yorkshire lad. Thanks wentworth wood house.

Glad you enjoyed it! We're very proud of our all volunteers- especially when, like "William", they graduated though our own Creative Producers education program such as our actor Ryan did and many others who you may have seen throughout our videos on the channel.

So interesting. Such a complicated hierarchy of servants in those great houses.

Yes they are! Almost a mirror of the social hierarchies of the families who employed them.

We love these stories!! This is what makes your work so valuable! You keep people’s stories alive. Buildings are interesting for their history, architecture and engineering but it’s the stories of the people who lived there that are so fascinating. Who were they? What were there days like? What were there dreams? And what ever became of them? This is how you bring history alive and remind of us who came before and why.

That curiosity about the lives of those who lived and worked at this fantastic House is exactly what drives the Team to tell these stories. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Next stop is the story of the Groom at the stables so stay tuned for that in the near future! :)

34 staff? They must have been absolutely knackered

They often walked up to 10-15 miles a day! But normally they just looked after the Earl, his wife and their children. For all those special occasions and house parties, the Fitzwilliams brought in a lot of extra staff from the Estate and Village. Everyone took a lot of pride in showcasing the House - it was a tradition that the villagers would be invited in to see everything set out because they'd all played a part in making it happen.

I'm sure autoregenerative subtitling is a curse for all who have it. Good luck with all your efforts in that enormous house. It's a marathon job to be sure.

We're working to upload a transcript for this video. Some of the heavily accented spoken English has proved a bit of a challenge for built-in UA-cam caption software.

Well spotted! He's pure Yorkshire, born and bred :-) The volunteer team which makes the videos doesn't have any budget to bring in actors, so they have to use talent from within their own ranks. Ryan has been with us since January 2022 and will graduate from University later this year.

People in service had a better time than the majority of the working class.
Regular paid work as well as room and board.
With most of your daily needs covered you don't need to make a lot of money to live comfortably.

They must not have had any children. She was geriatric by pregnancy standards when she married at 37. Women now days don’t seem to understand how conception and pregnancy was not easily carried in your late 30’s before expensive medical help could extend the possibility even into the 40’s and even now it’s still not what is safest. What is statistically safest focusing on family while you’re still young and without co-morbidities that could come. There is a big difference between people like my aunt who was unable to have a child before her 40’s and those who think they can bank on it all while taking carcinogenic birth control not realizing the additional risks and issues they are choosing. I know not everyone wants family or adult children will take care of them one day, but many people are sad if children are never their portion, especially if they made poor choices in their youth and those children they could have had are now gone and your alone.

I follow with the sound off and the subtitling on. It bears no relevance to what is actually being said. As I can hear I must sympathise with those who cannot as they may be unablecto grasp what is being said. This is a common problem on tv too I think when the machine cannot transliterate what is being spoken. Poor tech? Poor pronunciation? American kit trying to read English pronunciation? I gave no idea.

We aploagise for this! UA-cam autogenerates subtitles and sometimes doesn't do the best job of it. As a volunteer team, we often struggle to find the time to subtitle our videos for both in house and our UA-cam channel but is something we're pushing to do more regularly in the future. We'll correct these subtitles ASAP for you so you can enjoy the video!
