What's weird is that when in the sixties, Jardine looked old for his age, but he looks the exact same as he did back in the sixties so he looks pretty young for his age right now.
listening to Al here, it just made me SMILE.............................a real class act......then add the rest of The Beach Boys and what do u have MAGIC
Al and Mike have been drug free and practitioners of Transcendental Meditation with the 70s. But the TM didn't stop Al and Mike from hating each other.
I love al. Seeing him fuck up sloop john AND i kissed her gave me so much comfort being a guitar player! Just remember how many live gigs he has done with the bb's. This guy is a class act. Paid his dues many, many times over.
Probably the most 'normal' of the 5....and most financially prudent. Al was always careful with what little money he made compared to the rest. Invested wisely, didn't spend stupidly. Hard to believe that guy played football!
First I listened to Forever by The Explorers Club. It has an intro much like And Then I Kissed her. They capture the feel and sound of the Beach Boys perfectly. Then I listened to Don't Forget The Sun. I'm hooked on them now. Thanks. Wishing you the best of holidays and a great New Year. We all survived the Mayan calendar. There were no mass disappearances of humans, mega multiple car crashes and no jets were tumbling from the skies.
Mike's voice could have been easily been replaced. He might have one of the most identifiable voices in rock and that can be chalked up to his nasal sound that I always found to be grating. There are Mikey lovers out there on certain You Tube video sites. Most of these people are too young to remember. I was in 11th grade when Smile was supposed to come out. He was jealous because VDP was penning the lyrics. Though Smiley Smile was a good album it was a shell of what Smile was. Thanks Mikey.
Two things didn't happen that would have put the Beach Boys on top of the Beatles. 1- The Beach Boys playing The Monterey Pop Festival and 2- Capital Records and the band backing Brian and finishing Smile. Instead Capital Records released the 1st two Best Of records in '66-'67 and then Smiley Smile in '67. The late '60's early '70's seen Carl & Dennis come into their own. The Beach Boys could have been even been more amazing.
Al, faithful and true to Brian. So very clear in all the interviews, done w/o greed, looking out for Brian, with respect and honor. Sorry, I just don't see Mike L. that way. Something not right with that guy. Maybe its his guru's....
Jardine played bass on The Beach Boys' first recording, the 1961 "Surfin'." Following his brief departure from the band in early 1962, he dabbled with a career in the air industry in Los Angeles. Popular belief suggests he was replaced by David Marks, but in fact the two guitarists worked more or less concurrently with the Beach Boys and the confusion arises from Jardine's temporary leaving the band. Jardine fully rejoined the Beach Boys in the summer of 1963 at the request of Brian Wilson.
Mike is the one who first came up with the idea of starting a band. He knocked up a girl and needed the $ to help support them. He knew that the Wilson bros (Mike's cousins) were talented. Al got roped in.
You can tell right from the beginning of this video that Al Jardine doesn't like that Fender... He just looks tentative and uncomfortable with it all the way through. Somebody knew it and they brought him the Martin, a much better guitar.
The lyrics of the Beatles did become more complex after the advent of Dylan. I like the way Brian and the Beatles had a healthy competition going. They came out with Rubber Soul, which in turn inspired Brian to do Pet Sounds and that led to Sgt Pepper. Dylan loved Pet Sounds too. He said it forever changed the way albums were made. I wish Van Dyke would have written an answer to He Writes Speeches about Mike called Sue You Sue Me Blues.
I meant that some real talent would try to play rock and the crowd kept shouting them down asking for disco. I love Elvis Costello and the Attractions on Get Happy. All the groups you mentioned are great though I like the earlier Bowie more than his later songs. What a musical journey it has been - from vinyl - cassette - cd - ipod. I also like early Deep Purple, Traffic, Kinks - especially Face To Face through Arthur, Lou Reed with or without the Velvet Underground.
I've been a fan of the Beach Boys since they first started making records and have never liked Mike. Al is so down to earth and very friendly with the fans. I always get the feeling that when Mike is being nice it's phony and he's just playing spin doctor. Al's band is much better than Mike's version of the Beach Boys. How could he be able to use the Beach Boy's name is beyond me. That should be for Brian and if Brian doesn't want it then Al should be able to use the name.
Mike uses the Beach Boys name under licence, that is he pays Brother Records for the privilege. Therefore the directors of Brother,Brian ,Al,Mike etc get paid out of money Mike pays Brother to use the Beach Boys name.So Brian and co. earn money from the Beach Boys still touring though they don't perform but Mike gets nothing when Brian tours because he tours under his own name.
Nothing to be sorry about, Thisisforchats. Your comment is a bit inaccurate. David Marks technically replaced Al Jardine, who was bassist on their first recording. When Jardine returned, they both were in the band together (with Brian already shying from live performance) until Marks left, his father and Murray Wilson getting into an altercation over financial and managerial issues. They were both very close to the Wilson family, so I believe it would be fair to call them both founding members.
Don't even get me started on what I think about American Idol and Simon Cowell and ilk like him. I still sing to a degree. During the 90's I used to write songs with a really talented guitarist. My job was singing, often coming up with the melody and writing the lyrics. My favorites were Black Witch Lizard and Under The Oaks. Thank God disco died. That kept a lot of talent off the market for quite a while. I hated the Bee Gees when they were doing disco. Their 60's stuff was real indie like.
I that Mike was integral to the early BB's harmony and that Dennis, Chaplin, Fataar and Johnston could do lead just as well if not better than him. Mike's lyrics in the early years were good and then Brian wanted songs that were about other things besides amusement parks, the beach, cotton candy, caramel corn and hot dogs. The fans of the BB's were growing up. Brian's best songs were written with Gary Usher, Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks imo. Love You was my last favorite album + Brian's albums.
I know what you mean. At one time I got into a heated debate with someone who practices the art of auto-tuning for recording artists and he went on and on about how painstakingly laborious work it is. I'd rather hear pure unadulterated talent. Look at what some artists did in the sixties with just a 4 track. The Doors are an excellent example of that. The record industry now markets pap and foists their garbage on the masses.
I'll check out The Explorers Club. Brian has influenced so many artists. Did you ever hear Brian Wilson Said by Tears For Fears. The debut album of The Thrills So Much For The City definitely has Beach Boys harmonies in it also. I also feel that The Thorns self titled album has Brian Wilson influences too. Another fan of Brian's is Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. Did you ever hear the album The Who Sell Out. I honestly feel that Country Air influenced The Band to some degree.
I can remember as a kid seeing the ads on TV about the upcoming promised Smile album - "certain to sell 1 million units - in January. And we waited and waited. Mikey lovers blame it on Brian and his use of drugs. It's just that Brian received so much flak about Smile, especially from Mike that he shelved it. Brian was growing by leaps and bounds and Mike wanted to stick to the formula. It was stagnating for Brian. In the early days, Murry the SOB should have sacked Mike.
Yeah, Mike would add or subtract a word or two and they demand credit. For me it has always been words and music. Brian must have been blown away when he heard the lyrics that Dylan was writing. Mike couldn't even come close to penning lyrics such as Heroes and Villains, Surfs Up and Cabinessence. He was a Paul Anka type writing about puppy love. You nailed it on that one. I'm still livid about how Mike e-mailed Al and Brian informing them he no longer required their assistance on tour.
"How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?". WHO CARES?! Fact is, Brian was the "musical genius" behind Beach Boy music, influenced by Murray (his dad) and by "pop" male vocal quartets of the 50's. The Wilson's cousin, Mike Love, was brought in to "front" the band, but he didn't play the guitar. So, Al Jardine (who plays guitar and bass) came into the group and, when Al went back to college, David Marks came in to fill the 5th. spot. Al came back and played WITH David, who later left.
Jardine was an original being replaced by David Marks when Alan decided to go to college. After David Marks, Jardine came back. Get your facts straight.
You've got it wrong. David became a member of the group when Al left the group to go to Dental School. You kind of made a fool out of yourself. Al did return to the group at the request of Brian Wilson. Al can entertain quite nicely by himself like this. What could Mike "don't fuck with the formula" Love do? He could always sing through his nose as usual while accompanying himself with a tambourine.
Sorry, but Al Jardine was NOT a founding member of the Beach Boys. He replaced David Marks, who played rhythm guitar on the earliest Beach Boy hits. Marks left the group around 1962, and Al Jardine replaced him. Marks returned twice to the Beach Boys, and plays with them now, including Jardine.

+Simon Winter That's because Capitol fucked them over. The Beatles not only had support within the band, but also by George Martin and Brian Epstein before he died. Brian, at the time, didn't have the band nor Capitol supporting him a lot. Plus, his drug use got way outta hand.

***** So what are you trying to tell me? That because of the media and the wonders of George martin is the reason for the beatles success? Don't bother! They were brilliant musicians that adapted well to changes.
Simon Winter No, I'm saying that the Beatles had support from nearly everyone who was in the business while Brian Wilson was mostly on his own when he was doing Pet Sounds and SMiLE.
What's weird is that when in the sixties, Jardine looked old for his age, but he looks the exact same as he did back in the sixties so he looks pretty young for his age right now.

Al Jardine very underrated singer and musician.
Enjoyed listening to this! Al still has it all together. His voice still hasn’t changed! Love his singing!😊❤
Given how old Al is, his voice is still in pretty good shape! :D
Al has kept his voice in great shape!
Al's in his late 60's here and singing and looking pretty damn good!
I'd love to hang out with Al
He's so cute!
He even (nearly) managed to play a whole song all the way through....

You have to understand a band on the road, practices every day for a couple hours, usually late at night after the shows.
@@esolc100 - I do understand very well. In fact the account that you're replying to, 'now', is a band.

Kelly Marshall hi as head is enormous. Madhatter style
Why not stereo?
Nice when he mentions Marilyn for the crowd!
Yes there was and Al was very nice to all and signed anything.
Then I Kissed Her is my favorite Al Jardine lead!!! Sloop John B follows. His voice is one of the best in history
we love you Al Jardine
Al has obviously taken good care of himself, and we are thankful for it.
Al...thanks for so much...for everything...so many memories.
I love al. Seeing him fuck up sloop john AND i kissed her gave me so much comfort being a guitar player! Just remember how many live gigs he has done with the bb's.
This guy is a class act. Paid his dues many, many times over.
Might be a different arrangement from the one he's used to playing as part of the BBs.
Yeah Brian was a genius by turning Sloop John B into a classical song in the extended version. Amazing version of the song. Al is so down to earth! :)

Hah indeed man! His speaking voice and singing is exactly the same! I hope Ic can still sing that great when I am his age.
Great voice!!!

DefMode66 not even in the same league as the beatles
Steve Darius Opinions Vary
Steve Darius Vocally superior. The Beatles had 2+ Brian's.
the beach boys were musically better than the beatles, but they used session musicians, the beatles used ghost writers for some songs

Al seems like quite a regular and well adjusted guy, which is unusual for a Beach Boy.
scarface12347 mentions the leftmost picture is Van Dyke Parks. Second time here and I just now noticed the rightmost picture is Brian Wilson.
I agree, but Mike is a Beach Boy and no matter what he did as a person I simply can't dislike a man who sang all those great songs. (Harmony or lead)
