Do you believe in free speech?
Do you believe that people should be judged by their character, not their skin color?
Do you believe in freedom of religion?
If you believe these things, you’re probably not a progressive. You might think you’re a progressive. I used to think I was. My show, “The Rubin Report,” was originally part of the progressive “Young Turks” network.
Progressives struck me as liberals, but louder. Progressives were the nice guys; they looked out for the little guy; they cared about women and minorities; they embraced change.
In short, who wouldn’t want to be a progressive?
But over the last couple years, the meaning of the word “progressive” has changed.
Progressives used to say, “I may disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it.” Not anymore.
Banning speakers whose opinions you don’t agree with from college campuses - that’s not progressive. Prohibiting any words not approved of as “politically correct” - that’s not progressive. Putting “Trigger Warnings” on books, movies, music, anything that might offend people - that’s not progressive either.
All of this has led me to be believe that much of the left is no longer progressive, but regressive. This is one of the reasons I’ve spent so much time on my show talking about The Regressive Left.
This regressive ideology doesn’t judge people as individuals, but as a collective.
If you’re black, or female, or Muslim, or Hispanic, or a member of any other minority group, you’re judged differently than the most evil of all things: a white, Christian male. The Regressive Left ranks minority groups in a pecking order to compete in a kind of “Oppression Olympics”. Gold medal goes to the most offended.
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream that his children would be judged by their character and not their skin color was a liberal idea, but these days, it’s not a progressive ideal.
And what about religious freedom - the idea that no one else can tell you what you have to believe? Surely progressives still support that basic right.
Well, not so much.
I’m a married gay man, so you might think that I appreciate the government forcing a Christian baker or photographer or florist to act against their religion in order to cater, photograph or decorate my wedding. But you’d be wrong. A government that can force Christians to violate their conscience can force me to violate mine. If a baker won’t bake you a cake, find another baker; don’t demand that the state tell him what to do with his private business.
I’m pro-choice. But a government that can force a group of Catholic nuns - literally called the Little Sisters of the Poor - to violate their faith and pay for abortion-inducing birth control can force anyone to do anything.
That’s not progressive; that’s regressive!
Today's progressivism has become a faux-moral movement, hurling charges of racism, bigotry, xenophobia, homophobia, Islamophobia and a slew of other meaningless buzzwords at anyone they disagree with.
The battle of ideas has been replaced by a battle of feelings, and outrage has replaced honesty. Diversity reigns supreme - as long as it’s not that pesky diversity of thought.
This isn’t the recipe for a free society, it’s a recipe for authoritarianism.

@@electricboi9319 I believe people have the sense that if America were to become a dictatorship, that it would be a cult of personality ( ex, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Kim jong un, etc) but in reality it would probably be a bureaucratic takeover over the course of years, under the illusion that we have free elections ( and no I’m not talking about Trumps claims to last election either.) Kind of more on the alignment of a Technocracy with a figurehead president.

If the people in the government are dependant on these corporations for their income they will do what these corporations want. So if these corporations put pressure on the politicians then laws will go in favour of these corporations. This is common and causes corpuption because a non democratic organisation like corporations are gaining control and power over the government which is meant to be democratic so democracy weakens in the name of capitalism. Then you say "stealing" from corporations in order to redistribute wealth so that poor people who are subject to buying food, clothing and shelter from these corporations can actually afford it if it is not already free like it should be. Furthermore, these corporations are also "stealing" from their workers because the fact that a profit is made means that the workers are not paid all the value they added to the product or service therefore they have been stolen from.

I would argue that classical liberalism shares a lot of the same tenets as classical conservatism. In other words, many conservatives today are more neo-conservatives than traditional conservatives. The idea that liberalism and conservatism are two opposite ends of the spectrum is a false dichotomy perpetuated by our political system and media to give people something to argue about so that they pay less attention to what is actually going on.
I'd argue that it's more libertarian than anything, although people act like that's an insult, because my god, how could anyone in their right mind be a libertarian? (Again, another group that people tend to lump together as if everything one libertarian says must be espoused by all.)

I left the left and I can't describe how happy and satisfied I am with this decision. I'm a liberal defending true human rights and true democratic values, nobody gets censored, nobody gets excluded, no media getting twisted and every colour and person has equal rights (yes even white skinned people!)

If a baker wont bake a black person a cake, don't demand the state tell them what to do with their private business, go to another baker. If a store won't allow black people to shop there, go to another store.
That is not the same thing because the refusal to cater to gays is a part of a religion, and freedom of religion. In no religions is it sinful to be black, or to fraternise with black people.
The federal government is there to protect you from discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, or religion. Taking away your "right" to discriminate against others is not discrimination or "forcing your values" on someone else.
@Brandon Tang the federal government is there to defend the rights of its citizens. Freedom of religion is written into the Constitution. Freedom from all forms of discrimination from private individuals is not. Forcing nuns to pay for abortions IS forcing your values on someone else, as is forcing private individuals to provide their services to events to which they morally object.
Rationalism is better than constitutionalism. Freedom from institutional discrimination (yes that phrase is overused but I'm talking about the real kind) is more important than the freedom to believe in some magical man in the sky regardless of what previous generations thought. It doesn't matter than no religion that exists at the moment happens to call black people sinful in the same way that they call gay people sinful. Government upholding the sanctity of the whim of some author of an ancient book is the peak of spineless relativism.
I'm thinking about leaving the Democratic party too.

A couple things I noticed:
He still agrees with what many progressives think, Pro Choice, pro LGBTQ, etc. he just disagrees with them forcing religious people to serve their costumers
Another thing is that I initially thought the term “defending my Liberal Values is a conservative position” made no sense, should it be a liberal position? Kind of, you see Conservatism means you want to keep things a certain way. “Defending my liberal values has become a conservative position” means “I want to conserve my Liberal Values” which is more clear and makes more sense.
I wonder if Dave with re-think his position now that conservatives have shown their true colors, in all the vicious attacks they have made against him now that he announced that he is having kids.

I also left the left, but on reflection I realize my positions haven't changed in the last 15 years - the Left has. For instance, in 1986 Harry Reid passed an anti-illegal immigration bill to protect american middle class wages, safety, etc. What he wrote is nearly identical to Trump's position. Bill Clinton held a similar view in the mid 90's, that not controlling borders leads to stagnant wages, higher crime, etc. The Left used to be a champion of the average worker, helping Unions, etc. Now look at the TPP (partly authored by Obama and Hillary): a major power giveaway to giant corporations, which undermines decades of civil right and environmental progress, and screws the working class. If you haven't read the TPP - it is shocking, no matter your political view. Then there's Islam. I actually value equal rights, religious freedom, gay rights, free speech. All of these things are the literal antithesis to the tenets of Islam. So why should I support and foster that culture? Why is it racist to criticize a belief system that in many ways mirrors what we saw in Germany 70 years ago? I really feel like the modern Left is unprincipled, has no idea of it's roots, and does not know the value of what they have.

I left the left after Highschool when I saw how everyone at my school was (very liberal school, we apparently had "racists", and I'm christian first before my political ideology) I thought the left was correct and stood up for everyone just like a Christian should. But more and more I saw conservatives would identify as Christians and defend people regardless of identity, and I saw that liberals would bash me for being Christian, and would always insult my beliefs and have a condescending tone as if I were unintelligent. And if I happened to disagree with something like say abortion I shouldn't have an opinion because I'm "shoving the Bible down" their "throats". Watching this video provided some relief for me. Things for me began to change when I realized that most of the liberal whites I encountered did not truly have my interest at heart. I have grown tired of this played-out victim narrative of every 'minority' group, including my own. Opamigaaa Christians, don't discriminate gays. It's in their scripture that clearly said that people with the same sex should not fall in love with each other. They would say it's not right to do it but they won't stop you. And Arabs and Jews also have that rule in their scripture
I beg to differ. A Christian should NOT be able to discriminate against gays, but it should be their moral code as a good Christian, and not the government that forbids them doing it.

Uhhhh no, because unlike religious people I don't believe in executing people with different beliefs. Eradication of religion would be accomplished by increasing access to education and discouriging indoctrination.
