How I Built Our Chicken Coop

  • As a new parent to chickens, I was prepared to buy a chicken coop, until I did extensive research on pre-built coops and learned how weak and unreliable they are as well as having a short lifetime. I wanted something that would last a long time, so I decided to build my own coop! Something my husband, nor myself, have ever done. I share with you some tips and tricks and things I learned along the way! Let me know if you have any questions regarding the coop build or materials we used.

Hi, thanks for sharing your video and your experience. One question, where can I get the windows? and what size are they?

I'm not sure on the window size, i did not buy an actual window. I just cut out a square from the wood, then framed it in with some of the hardware cloth wire. However, the coop plans I bought on etsy that i referenced (in the description) has the window size info. I believe you can order it online. Hope this helps! :-)

Thanks for watching!!! My uncle helped me do the run and slanted Tin roof. I honestly wish I would’ve made it taller so I didn’t have to bend over when I walked in.

How many chickens fit in the coop without the run? Also how many fit with the run? Did the plans come with directions for the run?

Hi Kitty Cat!! I built this for 8 chickens originally. But since then, I have lost a chicken and gave away our rooster, so now I’m down to 6. I don’t think I would go over 8 chickens. But if you have more than 8, there is a bigger coop house design plan from the same seller on Etsy. The pdf plans I bought do not include plans for the actual run. My uncle and I came up with that part on our own. Sometimes I wish it was bigger/wider. But it’s fine for what I have. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much!!! I think building your own is better than the pre-fab ones in the store! Good luck on your project! Thanks for watching!
