Simon Tolkien both wanted Jackson to be less faithful to The Lord of the Rings, and was “excited” to see how Jackson and the writers would expand from there. Instead of people looking at a failure and asking themselves, "What could I have done to have instead succeeded" they say, "Society is wrong and needs to be changed so I can succeed". When amazon first announced the series, the pitch they gave all the jurnos was it was about young aragorn's travels. In the appendixes (and referenced a handful of times in the main book story itself) it describes how he travels across Middle earth, starting with his ranger culture in the remnants of arnor, and then first traveling south to spend time rohan and gondor before sneaking into the lands controled by sauron, and meeting and learning about the easterlings, haradrim, etc.
At some point that was scrapped and it became about the 2nd age.

I suspect the main reason they were hired is because JJ Abrams has some sort of leverage over the folks at Amazon (such as through his wife's MeToo crusade), and when they called Abrams to 'put in a good word for them,' it was really an appeal to exert that coercion and force.
In other words, it was the whiny entertainer going to the Godfather crying that he didn't get a job, and the Godfather got him the job
Amazon didn't want them. They cried to JJ, who threatened Amazon. Amazon relented under pressure and hired them.

The appendices had all you needed for a show that could've easily and completely been put together. Also, remember, they could pay extra if they needed to, for characters, and plot points in other works.
Instead of The Rings of Power... it could've been Lord of the Rings: The Last Alliance
If they had competent people and knew that people would tolerate time jumps from season to season.
Season 1 and 2: The Fall of Numenor and the rise of Gondor. They could've even kept their weird woke messaging, with humans hating on the elves, and elves at contention with the humans. We could've had the story of the Black Numenorians roving the country side as a threat. We could've had the Dwarves and Harfoots (as Harfoots hung out and lived in proximity to the dwarves) and the Mines of Moira Dwarves were the only Clan mentioned by Tolkien to fight against Sauron.
Galadriel could be sensing something truly evil is coming, feel it in the air, taste it in the water, and it leads to her leaving her husband when the Elvish council tells her that the men are corrupt, and that they will do what they are to do.
Her sense of great evil leads her to Numenor, where she discovers a man who she senses great evil in, speaking in the ear of the king to invade Valinor. Something like that, if you needed her.
Seasons 3 and 4: Sauron loses his physical form, caught in the flood of Numenor, and reforges himself as the Dark Lord, with help of the one ring, anchoring his existence to this world to the ring. He begins to build his army, the elves seek to warn men, and seek to prepare for war. The men fight amongst themselves, the dwarves deal with problems, and a small group of harfoots end up stuck in the middle.
Here she ends up in Lothlorien, trying to work with the leaders, as the world has been made round, and she doesn't trust in her own council to fight the evil.
Season 5: The Last Alliance of Men and Elves hangs on a thread, will it snap before they go to the battle that will decide the fate of middle earth.
Galadriel wouldn't be canonical, but most the rest of the stuff is in the appendices.

When I started writing, I sent an early manuscript of mine to a literature association because they offered to review manuscripts. They immediately sent me back a publishing-contract but I ended up turning them down.
Why? Because I KNEW that my writing was not good enough to be published yet and I had not quite figured out everything about the story. It turned out to be the right call because a few months later I ended up scrapping the entire setting of the story because it just was not working out. (Also I later found out that these associations are often quite unprofessional and just want to get your money. Definitely true, when you consider the quality of the early manuscript that I sent to them)
I have learned and improved a lot since then but I know that I still have a long way to go in order to create my best possible work. Becoming a good writer takes time, patience, dedication and a critical view of ones own work.

Regarding the 7 times to pitch the script: There is 3 ways this could go, probably, but it's all about who they had to pitch this to. If it was to Tom Shippy and the Tolkien estate (pre-Christopher's death), then yeah, we know they got rejected at least once or twice. If it was to Amazon execs, they could have been rejected easily for any number of checkmark, film-by-formula reasons (or that they sucked). Then, finally, they could have simply had to pitch it to multiple tiers of executives at amazon, and any one failure started the whole chain over again.
But in the end, everyone involved in this process either died too early to stop it, or failed to stop this obamination from coming into being.
