I was 12 years old and my whole family was sitting in front of the tv watching this. Michael pulled out that Moonwalk and our mouths fell on the floor! The next day EVERYONE was talking about it ( even segments on the National news broadcasts) and EVERYONE was trying to Moonwalk! It was a sensation and
I could only sort of do it in my socks!! Lol

It’s important that current and future generations understand the shockwave this performance created. It not only launched Michael into super-stardom, it had a significant cultural impact. It was the first time, on a global scale, that non-black teens by the millions were idolizing a black artist. Kids in predominantly white suburbia wanted to dress like him, move like him and, most importantly, they wanted to buy his music. It was a seismic shift in the culture.

He could dance and sing at the same time. Better than anyone else. However as this was a Motown Anniversary, he was not allowed to sing live for Billie Jean as that was not a Motown song. This was at the tail end of he and the Jackson Five did a medley of their biggest hits together and Michael sang live on those. You owe it to yourself to look for the full segment.
Watching Michael perform live is the full gift on display. He gave 110% each time. A unique and magical musical genius and an incredible stellar human being‼️❣️🌹✌️🦋🎶. Don't stop now. You have lots of live performances to get to!

Funny to think about the fact that Motown refused to even play the instrumental live, what's even funnier than that is that MJ only accepted to be in there in the first place if they let him perform his new song, Billie Jean, Motown accepted and then they pulled out the "Hah, this ain't our song so we ain't playing it live :)" lmao

He would've loved to hear you call this magic! Ironically he hated this performance because he didn't stand on his toes for long enough!

I was a Rocker into Van Halen when that came out and even being 180° from my genre of music, his talent was undeniable.
No doubt a G.O.A.T. And he even got Eddie Van Halen to do the solo in Beat It. MJ was the Prince of Pop and I doubt we will ever see anything like that again.

I'm 99.99% sure he's just lip syncing to the studio version. This was my senior year of high school.

Yeah, he is lip syncing but I do not blame him. Dancing while singing at the same time is tough and can easily run out of breath.

Whoo hoo! So I should ask my kids if watching this was their "Beatles on Ed Sullivan" moment. Amazing. Dang Fame and Drugs that did the man in.

I was just a kid at the time but still remember seeing a clip of that performance on the 6pm news here in Australia. What a massive moment in music!

Your reaction is so good!!! Look at the joy he brings. I was the same watching it for the first time, I had to keep pausing. Imagine this is your first TV performance to seal your place in the industry.... nah. He is the GOAT. You should watch Billie Jean Bad Tour Wembley as that was actually sang live and he was incredible.
