  • Hi all,
Here's what I hope will be a regular series on this channel: Mock-Up Mondays! A series where I sew through patterns I have that I like while I'm unsure if I want to dedicate the time and material cost to sewing a wearable, functional garment.
The first installment is this super cute dress, Simplicity 8591. And it was a journey. From confusing envelope swaps to bizarre cutting layouts, watch as I struggle through the preparation, but still wind up with a pretty cute and relatively well-fitting dress.

Sway back adjustment maybe at the back? Looks lovely.

Another reason for the back being longer is that maybe you could benefit from a small F.B.A adjustment. The front rides up a little without that extra room in the bust. Definitely should make again though, very flattering on you. Make detailed notes on what you like and dislike and baste them to the instruction sheet. This way you won't have to look through your detailed video. To quote Stephanie Canada, never use pins or tape as they both disintegrate and could damage pattern or next user

This video is an actual godsend, I'm in the middle of making this dress today and there's some fitting problems.
The arms are too tight and i cant move them properly when i have the back pinned and the waist is too long and sagging even though I followed all the pattern size measurements. I think its because I'm an actual petite woman, I'm 5, 1" so the skirt is really long on me too and the pattern though it says petite really isn't.
I think I will be putting in a gore at the sleeves and underarms, shortening the waist and maybe putting in a panel in the back to make it wider.
THIS PATTERN IS SO WEIRD 😅

I wonder if you thought of dying your mock-up’s.

Cute mock-up! Thanks for doing this, I’m in the middle of making this dress and turned to UA-cam for advice! I’m making C but with B sleeves. BTW my pattern has a place on the bodice to shorten for petite sizing. I am petite and took out about an inch off the bodice. I also cut the skirt pieces shorter as I don’t want it as long, hoping to have it rest above my knee. I am looking to make it look a little more modern but still have the 50’s flare.

The mock up turned out wonderful, and thank you for noting all those goofy changes. Unfortunately, when simplicity and butterick try to put out their repro patterns, they tend To use all the original instructions and cutting layouts which are made for 36" with fabrics Instead of the wider with we are used to today.. Often, they don't even have the original pattern so they just make what they think it would look like, adjusted for modern neck lines and low armscye which means they fit kind of wonky. If they do happen to use the original tissue pattern, they don't adjust for modern bust lines and foundation garments, so in either case, unless you're comfortable enough changing most of the Bodice pattern, or you're wearing All historically accurate foundation garments, you're likely going to be disappointed by their repro patterns. I thought it was me but when you search the Internet enough you realize that it's just them. Also the ease is way too much in side seams but not the neckline 🤯 the big 4 are c*** at doing this kind of thing

I never cut to the pattern instructions.... Am i doing it wrong??
The dresses seem to come out good.
What's the reason for laying it the fabric that way? Is it simply because of the line fabric?

I like to follow the cutting diagram as part of the review process since sometimes, the diagram does know best, and other times, I can cut things out more efficiently and use less fabric. The only thing you really need to make sure is that you're cutting the pattern pieces on the correct grainline. I work a lot with cotton wovens, so I can usually cut on the straight or cross grain without any issue, but when I'm working with stretchy stuff I just need to make sure the stretch is going in the correct direction. I used to be really bad about cutting things on the bias, so some of my old projects have stretched out and warped over time.
