Folks. Do your self a favor. Research 38 USC, 38 CFR, and M28C before you make that first visit. Remember, the counselors and staff are not your friends. My suggestion from experience is to double-check every word that is uttered for truth. May your path lead to success. Semper Fidelis
I'm a 100% permanent and total disabled veteran but currently working with an associate's degree / certification. What would be the likelihood of someone like myself getting approved for reclassifiation in employment?
What they’re looking for is how your disabilities are making it difficult to do your current field/ how your current field is activating or making worse your disabilities. Once that’s accepted as valid then it will be a matter of the direction you want to go not aggravating/relieving your disabilities or your disabilities not preventing you from performing in that field/position. Mentally you need to get in the headspace that this person is your new best friend. Do what they ask of you sooner than later. Some of them are great, some are not but they are both your key and your gate. It really is a great program, just do your best to give what it asks and it will more than take care of you.
You have a back injury but you want to be a firefighter and cause more injury to your back? You’re telling them right there that your disability isn’t true.
That is a tough one. I agree with the comment above. I think you have a lot better chance if you try to go back to school for something that is less physical. Citing back pain and wanting to become a firefighter is going to be tough ground to bridge
I’ve already used VR&E once but only for one semester (I didn’t discover it until I was finished and out of my GI BILL). I am ready to go back to school for something else. Can I use VR&E more than once for a different degree?
How could I go about this being 30 percent disabled veteran trying to use voc rehab for ibew apprenticeship program? I right now only have 18 months of my gi bill left because I decided to quit my college program
If you're wanting to be a union electrician with the ibew. you don't need the GI Bill. I was 10% when I did it 20 yrs ago with very little out of pocket expenses.
VRE is different than GI Bill. Essentially, it will give you an additional 12 months. Since you have time on your GI Bill left you will get the higher MHA rate
Appreciate the information! What about a 100% P&T veteran interested in this program? Have a BBA in Finance but I’ve noticed my anxiety stemming from my PTSD has been affecting my current job, a lot.

I have 10%, and the counselor I had said he denied me solely because I have a master’s degree in business and administration. He said I was overqualified, I overcame my situation just by my education level alone.…. Where do I go from here?
Ya. That makes it though. The more education you have the tougher it is to get. First, I don't know of anything in the reg that states your ineligible if you have a masters degree. Second, I would try to get your disability rate increased then try again
well just finished the interview. Luckily I had a polite lady. I really dont have high hopes I will be approved by the way she was talking. She did say she wont make a decision for at least 2 weeks which threw me off, I swore I read they have to make a decision by the end of the interview.
@Astrokeofluck she brought up my rating 3 separate times and said if she denied me this time to wait until my other claims go through so my disability is higher and will most likely be approved. Also she wants to review complete medical history.
what if after you separated you been unemployed the entire time. How can one talk about how a member wants to "Get out of XX to get into YY" would we just paint the picture of the job during active duty and how we dont want to do that and we want to do XYZ
Well the fact that you don't have a job could be due to your SCD. Do your currently qualifications allow you to get a job that doesn't aggravate your SCD?
yes I do. the entire time I been working on it. Enrolled in an MBA, studying for my PMP. Also took a few other certifications. I want to say I am marketable for sure, but I am trying to enroll in Voc rehab to help. I am sure there is a job out there like a boring slow-paced office job that would not aggravate my SCDOr some low 17-22 $ an hour job that would hire anyone. Although I wouldn't be happy with it. lol I don't see myself as marketable currently for the career and payscale I am striving for to include not aggraving SCD . @@Astrokeofluck

Might be an ignorant question, but what if you don't currently have a career/employment but are/will be utilizing GI Bill for education for future career?
I’ve got an appointment Monday! I have my masters degree but need specialize certifications/more focused schooling for the career I want, (business but want to be a business analyst). 🙏🏻🤞🏻 Here goes nothing.
@@ameerskater nope :( they basically told me because I have a masters degree already, I should be highly marketable so they couldn’t justify paying for another degree for me but offered employment help.

What if you already obtained your degree from VR&E, but want to switch professions? This is my case. I’d like to get approved for my new career because it’s something I enjoy doing.
That is going to be tough. You've already signed paperwork in the past saying you are 'rehabilitated". The things you would have think about/answer are - How has your situation changed? Why is the job you were rehabilitated for no longer a fit for you? Have your SCD gotten worse? Can you not find work?
Update on this: The key is that you would have to be able to show that the disability, in which you were rehabilitated for, has worsened in that you can no longer do that job that you were initially rehabilitated for.
I have my appointment this Thursday and I’m so nervous. Is it hard? I’m currently in school for Electrical Engineer for my Bachelors, but I have 2 weeks left on Gi Bill
Are these meetings in person or can they be done over video call? I am currently overseas but wanted to get the ball rolling already instead of wasting these 2 coming months till I get back home
Hey man feel free to pick me apart. c-130 loadmaster, ETS in a month trying to apply for VR&E for a commercial pilot program. Already being in mil aviation, applying for another aviation program on the outside. How would you approach a new program if the possible future employment may stress existing disability?
I used Voc Rehab for Gunsmithing School and then again for Machine school. Now I work for a firearm Manufacturer. About to tap in to it for a 3rd time to get my BBA and then use my GI Bill for my MBA.
Does it matter what type of career you want to go for? Like I’m trying to be a philosophy professor at a college. Are they gonna be like nah bruh you were a marine you’re dumb as a box of rocks.
So for the job part that affects my disability can i talk about my job in the marine corps? Or do i need to have a job after that? Cause in my situation i have wasted about 2 years gi bill since i been out. And how much does vre cover if approved? I heard you keep your leftover gi bill and get bah is that true? Good video!
@scenebreh What are you currently doing, school ? VRE essentially adds 12 months to your education time. You will get BAH as long as you have time left on your Post 9/11, at least one day.
Is there a video that can assist on how to quickly gather the information for the WEAMS and Labor packet after getting the initial approval? These usually include finding links for job offers in the fields you want to go in as well as finding and inputting the data such as what is the outlook for your job in the future (the % of growth etc...) I don't know if every VR&E counselor has different versions of these packets. Anyone that has already filled out those final packets for your educational plan approval is appreciated.
Hey I am trying to apply for education benefits. I sent a lot of information on why. Like why the current career field exacerbates my injuries. Had 16 jobs in the last 5 years. I resigned due to my disabilities being exacerbated and they are documented. I was unemployed and homeless Which exacerbated injuries sustained in military Explained that the skills I required which were all exacerbated disabilities, in each job Quoted EEOC, ADA and the Rehabilitation Act in my numerous emails as well as retaliation Explain why cybersecurity and law will be more beneficial and the only option Took onet It confirmed that cyber and law and other interesting fields align with me Came up with an education plan for this Long term benefits And market analysis Explained why state funding is not helpful and that is circumventing legal responsibility Explained me being entitled due to being a veteran Also filed an internal complaint. My question is this viable information and what other source of info do I need?
Seems like you have it pretty well covered. It you currently do not have work you are pretty much a shoe in for the program. Make sure you stress your SCD and why they have enabled you from getting work. What pain are the causing? Why you couldn't/can't work in past jobs that you have done? Why your goal will not worsen your SCD? Make sure you are ready to answer those questions as well.
Upon further watching of this video, it's like prepping for the murder board for your pin. Go into that meeting and know your shit, and get approved. Got it, it clicked shipmate
As far as education benefits, no. You can be on a felony conviction and still use your education benefits while incarcerated. Other things, such as pension and disability compensation aren't as guaranteed.
how about those of us who have been unemployed for some years? I went to cosmetology school on my gi bill years ago and I cant perform that do to the physical demands...but how would I explain the years of being unemployed due to mental health struggles?
I would say just be honest. If your are unemployed, or have periods of unemployment, I'd so your actually more likely to be approved for the program. This is exactly who, and what, the program is intended for!
Burmese pythons and shiny balls, the assurance I didn't know I needed ;) On a more serious note thank you for the great words of encouragement and breaking down the interview process. Do you mind if I ask what you applied for as a career track and how you managed to balance the pitch of "my disability handicaps my employability this way however, I would be a great fit because.." ? I have an interview next month and I fucked up the initial by misinterpreting it as trying to expand on the negatives of my disabilities as if I were submitting a claim with the idea that I'd be showing the counselor "look how fucked I am, I really need this." Obviously I was not only misinformed but, wildly unprepared but, by a stroke of luck I was given another shot and now I'm feverishly working to not make the same mistakes. Any personal experience on your end going through it you'd feel comfortable sharing would be greatly appreciated!
@granthoyt5291 let's take advantage of that stroke of luck. "How my disability handicaps my employability" - This should reference your CURRENT employment situation. How does your current situation affect your service connected disability? Not how your SCD effects your employability on a general basis. If you don't currently have a job, how has it affected you in getting a suitable job? "How I would be a great fit" Whatever you plan on using VRE for, why is that career path a better fit for your and your SCD? For example, if you have back problems and are currently working construction. You would can to speak on why you can't do construction anymore because of your back. Instead, you want to use VRE to get a degree in business so you're doing less manual labor, which will be more favorable to your back.
@@Astrokeofluck so it’s not so much as avoiding the idea of being employable per se as I initially thought but more so, “yeah I’m employable but currently with these limited opportunities for me and/or my current line of work and their lacking in compatibility with the parameters of my disability, I would be better suited as -insert profession here- and that is why this program would be so beneficial to allow me the resources necessary to get there” if I’m reading that right? Like that’s the pitch you should present along with a supplementation of research on the position, timeline, requirements, feasibility, etc. ?
Yes. You don't have to be completely unemployable because of your service connected disabilities. If your service connected disabilities effects your in your current job ( i.e. it makes it more difficult for you to do) you're a candidate for VRE

Hmmm plumber can be a pretty physical job, I imagine. You don't think it will aggravate your service connected disabilities if dry walking does ?
My counselor said that I have to be unemployed in order to be eligible for VR&E. Is this true?
No. Not true. I was not unemployed when I got approved, nor do you have to be.
@@Astrokeofluck wow thank you for the response, I appreciate it
Folks. Do your self a favor. Research 38 USC, 38 CFR, and M28C before you make that first visit.
Remember, the counselors and staff are not your friends.
My suggestion from experience is to double-check every word that is uttered for truth.
May your path lead to success.

Well said
This is really helpful. I have an interview with my vrc next Friday you give me hope I appreciate it.
Best of luck!
Were you approved?
I'm a 100% permanent and total disabled veteran but currently working with an associate's degree / certification. What would be the likelihood of someone like myself getting approved for reclassifiation in employment?
Very very likely. As long as you can explain why your disabilities have kept you from getting a job or why they make your current job more difficult.
@Astrokeofluck thank you for the input
Just got approved today. First ray of hope in a long time. Applying is super easy. Don’t wait if you need a change or help finding direction.
Hell ya! Good luck
Do you have any tips for the intitial interview? What questions did they ask?
@@Chogath7 ua-cam.com/video/2-RKJe66mM4/v-deo.html - Check out this video. Most up to date advice.
@@Astrokeofluck thank you!
Good advice I appreciate it! I have an appointment with a VocRehab counselor this Friday wish me luck!!
You got it!
How did it go?
Ok so I’m wanting to become a firefighter. It’s probably unlikely that VRE would approve for me to go to school for it if my disability is in my back?
You have a back injury but you want to be a firefighter and cause more injury to your back? You’re telling them right there that your disability isn’t true.
@@Anyesthetics-xp2lw well my current job is even worse on my back than being a fire fighter, plus my back is only 10% lumbago so nothing serious
That is a tough one. I agree with the comment above. I think you have a lot better chance if you try to go back to school for something that is less physical. Citing back pain and wanting to become a firefighter is going to be tough ground to bridge
Thanks for sharing. Super helpful I was curious what would disqualify you from VR&E at the interview level.
Glad it was helpful!
I’ve already used VR&E once but only for one semester (I didn’t discover it until I was finished and out of my GI BILL). I am ready to go back to school for something else. Can I use VR&E more than once for a different degree?
Were the unused VRE months refunded to your post 9/11 or GI Bill ?
How could I go about this being 30 percent disabled veteran trying to use voc rehab for ibew apprenticeship program? I right now only have 18 months of my gi bill left because I decided to quit my college program
Do you have a current job? How is your current job being affected by your SCD?
If you're wanting to be a union electrician with the ibew. you don't need the GI Bill. I was 10% when I did it 20 yrs ago with very little out of pocket expenses.
I am 60 percent service connected. Is VRE something different than the GI bill? I have a degree that i used my Post 911 gibill with
Yes. Completely different, VRE is an employment program. Do you have any of your Post 9/11 left?
@@Astrokeofluck 1 semester left

What sorts of things was she saying ?
No they do not need to make a determination by the end of the interview. Two weeks is a long time though
@Astrokeofluck she brought up my rating 3 separate times and said if she denied me this time to wait until my other claims go through so my disability is higher and will most likely be approved. Also she wants to review complete medical history.

what if after you separated you been unemployed the entire time. How can one talk about how a member wants to "Get out of XX to get into YY"
would we just paint the picture of the job during active duty and how we dont want to do that and we want to do XYZ
Although I wouldn't be happy with it. lol
I don't see myself as marketable currently for the career and payscale I am striving for to include not aggraving SCD . @@Astrokeofluck

Quick question. I applied for vr&e and ended up talking to a voc rehab counselor. I got approved to attend a certain collage but If I decide to attend liberty instead do I have to go through vr&e application all over to get approved?. Thanks❤
Yes, I believe so. I believe you will basically have to get that 'education track' approved via your counselor. I'd save your time and money, don't go to Liberty.
What school would you recommend?. Would it be better to just go to a community collage?. Also what's your experience with voc rehab?
Search R-ATP schools on Google. There will be an FAA website that pops up. Those are all approved R-ATP schools. See if there are any near you@@askingnothing
Might be an ignorant question, but what if you don't currently have a career/employment but are/will be utilizing GI Bill for education for future career?
Can you be more specific with your question? Is this in regards to getting approval?

What if you already obtained your degree from VR&E, but want to switch professions? This is my case. I’d like to get approved for my new career because it’s something I enjoy doing.
That is going to be tough. You've already signed paperwork in the past saying you are 'rehabilitated". The things you would have think about/answer are - How has your situation changed? Why is the job you were rehabilitated for no longer a fit for you? Have your SCD gotten worse? Can you not find work?
@@Astrokeofluck perfect way of thinking. I’m all over it. Thank you so much.
Update on this: The key is that you would have to be able to show that the disability, in which you were rehabilitated for, has worsened in that you can no longer do that job that you were initially rehabilitated for.

Stupid is as stupid does brother.
You can get approved for anything career, as long as you can show future employability

Currently, I do not have a video for that. A very helpful resource for me was bls.gov
Hey I am trying to apply for education benefits.
I sent a lot of information on why.
Like why the current career field exacerbates my injuries.
Had 16 jobs in the last 5 years. I resigned due to my disabilities being exacerbated and they are documented.
I was unemployed and homeless
Which exacerbated injuries sustained in military
Explained that the skills I required which were all exacerbated disabilities, in each job
Quoted EEOC, ADA and the Rehabilitation Act in my numerous emails as well as retaliation
Explain why cybersecurity and law will be more beneficial and the only option
Took onet
It confirmed that cyber and law and other interesting fields align with me
Came up with an education plan for this
Long term benefits
And market analysis
Explained why state funding is not helpful and that is circumventing legal responsibility
Explained me being entitled due to being a veteran
Also filed an internal complaint.
Hooyah Good luck
Does being a felon disqualify you from anything with the VA?
As far as education benefits, no. You can be on a felony conviction and still use your education benefits while incarcerated. Other things, such as pension and disability compensation aren't as guaranteed.

how about those of us who have been unemployed for some years? I went to cosmetology school on my gi bill years ago and I cant perform that do to the physical demands...but how would I explain the years of being unemployed due to mental health struggles?
I would say just be honest. If your are unemployed, or have periods of unemployment, I'd so your actually more likely to be approved for the program. This is exactly who, and what, the program is intended for!
Just makes since. Time to get some.
Get it
Burmese pythons and shiny balls, the assurance I didn't know I needed ;) On a more serious note thank you for the great words of encouragement and breaking down the interview process.
"How I would be a great fit"
Whatever you plan on using VRE for, why is that career path a better fit for your and your SCD?
