My wife's aunt was exactly like this character. Obnoxious and funny as hell. When she went into a nursing home I used to drive over and pick her up for family gatherings, and then take her back at the end of the night. One time we stuck a load of temporary tattoos on her arms to prank the other residents. She's loved, much missed, and never forgotten.

For American viewers, the sub-script to this is the frustration that many genuinely sick people have when they cannot get a timely GP appointment here in the UK. The upside of our system is that medical attention is free "at the point of access" (having been pre-paid through our taxes). The downside - and one the "Nan" character exposes - is that it is open to abuse by those who want time off on full pay.
Many people are under the misapprehension that the NHS is free - it is NOT. We pay for the services in our taxes. However, having said that, we have many foreigners that come here and get FREE treatment and it infuriates us Brits as they don’t contribute anything and put a strain on the service which in turn prevents people in the U.K. who pay their taxes from getting the treatment they deserve.
English people have so much suppressed anger. You don't notice because they are so polite, but inside they are seething! It is a great subject for comedy. This was really funny!
Love the one wen her grandson comes to hospital to see her n bring his girlfriend to meet the girl got a big nose it's classic laugh all the way,or the Irish nurse at th hospital had me crying,😂😂😂
Please find the Graham Norton Show interview of Catherine Tate on where the Nan character came from! Tom Cruise was there and found it hilarious. Lol. :-)

Nan was at the doctors not the hospital. BUT the older generation was like that in London. Absolutely awesome.

Her ref to ‘Daley Thompson’ is funny as he’s a Gold Medal Olympian athlete from UK
Daley Thompson was an Olympic gold medal winning decathlete who won his medals in 1980 and 1984.
That’s why he laughed at that, clearly already knows the great Daley Thompson.
