As long as you have this piece of kit set up properly, they are comfortable. I always carried my kit using this ruck high up on my back. When loaded up with my personal kit, a LAW rocket and an ammo box for the C6 (200 rounds of 7.62) it would easily get over 60lbs. Worn properly it was an easy go and it never let me down. A good piece of kit for sure and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good ruck.
As Buckwheats said, we never wore the webbing under the ruck unless the butt pouch was removed. We typically attached the webbing on the back of the ruck. From my years wearing 82 pattern kit the biggest point of discomfort was the lack of a chest strap on the ruck. we used to pull the shoulder straps in on ruck marches and it was far more bearable.
I did basic training in Saint Jean sur Richelieu Quebec using this rucksack and still use it today for bushcraft. Great explanation, great pack and way underrated! If you have one wear it high on the back with the weight on your hips.... It's designed for 45lbs comfortably and if worn correctly more. Cheers Oshawa bushcraft is a good channel to check out for info on this pack too *subbed
Nice to see a good review about it. Very well shown Peter. And of course its nice to have someone demo it that actually has experience with it in the field :) really good video Be well Craig
Mornin 2 ya, Peter; Very well explained & Demo-D. Gotta love the Ole 82 Ruck ! I noticed there was a SLACKER in camp, Just 4 a brief moment, ha ha. Thanks 4 sharing Friend !..........................................................ATB Terry....................God Bless
I was looking at one I saw on-line at an Army Surplus store out west. It was slightly used. I didn't buy it then and now it's gone. I'd rather see the used gear before I buy it. Good explanation of the pack. Thanks!
I’ve used 4 of these civilian packs from high end hiking to condor 72 packs yet I still find myself going back to my old reliable 82 rucksack and web belt. Possibly because I used it so long during my cadet years but it’s just the best pack I’ve found yet! I’ll make a video and show you my set up one day
Very Nice, there are not many videos online about the 82 pattern equipment. My group uses them extensively as part of our loadout. We are a Military Reenactment group.
The late Cold War within the Canadian Forces, we don't have many videos but some of our sister groups do, we span from British Columbia to Ontario with a small outcropping in New Brunswick.
No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the 82 pattern ruck to ride comfortably with the 82 pattern web gear, I still have a full set of the web gear but I haven't a frame for the ruck any more and I'm using the straps on my Swedish LK35 ruck.
FSBushcraft yup, still good gear! I have the large size tri-fold shovel carrier and would love to find the elusive small size that actually fits the American/West German made NATO tri-fold. Or the even more elusive Canadian tri-fold shovel that I've only seen pictures of.
The secret is this......the '82 pattern Web Gear is NOT supposed to be worn on your waste...it is designed to ride LOW on your hips..............that gives the separation between the ruck bottom and the web gear........It was my Sgt. that filled us in on that tidbit back in '86....used to see troops wearing it wrong all the time......but as soon as they where informed....issues and problems disappeared.....I miss the '82 web gear......the garbage "tac vests" the l;ads have now is shyte can;t carry half the kit, can;t adjust anything......the '82, IF you where a C9 gunner, you could use the "utility / C9" pouches, for a rifleman?...use the FN C1A1 pouches or the C2 pouches...later the C7 pouches....left handed or right, your could adjust your kit around...a common mod. we used was to put small green bungies through the holes on the yoke back...forming a set of vertical straps...could carry a poncho and woobie rolled in it on patrols etc......or your rain kit etc........ahhh. the good ol' days.....
looks a lot like the usa alice system. it wasn't too bad during warm season. during the fall, winter, and spring when temps fluctuated you had to carry/wear enough clothes to stay warm when stationary, but remove them before they got damp due to perspiration when marching. on top on all the mission oriented crap you had to carry.
+the mi woodsman it is a nice size and amazing the amount of stuff it well hold....I'm thinking of doing a more detailed video of the pack and what it can hold...a lot of people seem to like it....
Now that pack looks like really cool...I've got a Walmart Brand that I use and of course I don't know much about back packs but it does seem to be a bit on the uncomfortable side...I think I might do a review one day on Video...I've heard that you shouldn't just buy one from online unless you know a good bit about them due to purchasing one that is like you said..."Miss Sized"...I don't know...my expertise in this area is very limited.
+Man Land (Midnight121) Yes it is better to see and try the pack before buying if you can, I have bought many in the past that I thought would be good and turned out where not, so I went back to the ruck I know that works...lol
FSBushcraft well one is and then there were two that were around 70 bucks and then shipping... www.ebay.com/itm/CANADIAN-ARMY-RUCKSACK-BACKPACK-82-PATTERN-COMPLETE-29K-CN19-/271943822443?hash=item3f511d6c6b:g:urYAAOSwyQtVuUim
+Man Land (Midnight121) Its not a bad looking one, not a bad prices with shipping. If you like I could check to see what it would cost to send one to you from my guy also, up to you.
that's a very nice rucksack and the web gear looks great too.i use military surplus gear too, mostly US gear... i like the Canadian system you showed us.Never came across with these systems before.I like the mentality of the rucksack to sit higher of the buttpack. When i was serving i used to have a buttpack and i have to take it off when i had to use the large backpack. So i bought a medium Alice pack and used to wore it without the frame because it was sitting higher of the buttpack...It worked great ,especially at hot weather but during winter time i had to leave the buttpack because i had to carry more stuff and the use of the larger backpack was necessary... Do a review of the web gear too;i see the ammo pouches are large enough;they could carry good amount of shotgun shells i think.... Send me your address on pm,please.
+MountainMan I love the pack and it holds a lot....I will be doing a review on the Web Gear soon, I'm going to buy another one, as the one I was using in this Video is Kullcraven's.....
As someone who carried the 64 and 82 and current gen rucks the 64 is far superior in my opinion. The 82 is absolute shit. Due to the length of the ruck (once you factor the sleeping bag) the 82 will not sit on your hips correctly as soon as you are wearing any FFO. Add armour and it's the most uncomfortable thing in the world. The 64 can be upgraded with stuff from CP gear and works very well with our newer platforms.
I cannot believe you guys actually like the 82 ruck; a bigger piece of garbage has never been issued to a soldier. The 82 bag [on a 64 frame] was the only good part of it. With the valise mounted, it was a crippler of a system. It cannot be jumped with paratroopers, and in the cold, the whole s--tbox just fell to pieces, or the pull tabs would absorb water, swell, then freeze, making it necessary to use a set of multitool pliers to open them. Wore it from 84 to 99, after many mods to make it wearable: grommets reinforced, zap straps, bungy cords, and paracord, fastex buckles for the mag pouches; In 'C' company, 1 PPCLI, we were eventually lugging 15 to 20 kg of crap on it, without a rucksack, and looked like a bunch of military bagmen.
Easy to say that it is comfortable when you're wearing it empty with no valise and an empty buttpack. Try putting 70 lbs in it, adding a full valise, with two sleeping bags, goretex bivvy, ranger blanket, groundsheet, and putting top and bottom raingear, extra pair of wool socks, gloves, etc in your buttpack and walking for 13km. Can confirm, having done so for 13 years, this bag is absolute garbage. The waist strap cuts into your breathing. The bulk of the weight is distributed at the top of the pack, unlike the ALICE which has the valise at the top. The pack never distributes weight to your hips like it should because of the buttpack in the webbing. And when the top pocket is full, and you're wearing a helmet, you can't fire in the prone position. You end up looking like a turtle on it's back. And for a piece of military gear, certainly not easily repairable. If you snap one of the sewn in buckles for the top flap, your ruck is completely screwed. Also, you need to have the valise on in order to pack it, otherwise it will keep tipping over. I did adventure training with civvy gear and loaded an 80 lb pack and did 85km of snowshoeing in 3 days. Would never have done that with this piece of government garbage.
@@FSBushcraft well maybe you were lucky or fit into the singular body type for which it was designed. I'm 6'2 and the lower back pad goes halfway to where it should at it's lowest possible setting. The waist strap goes above my hips. Three years of light infantry (i.e. hardcore, regular use) and 10 years of use in a combat support trade and I have a herniated disc to show for it. There's a reason that the 82 pattern ruck sells for half the price of a 64 pattern. CP Gear even started producing a modernized version of the 64 because people want it. Criticism of the 82 ruck is well documented in Canadian army forums.
As long as you have this piece of kit set up properly, they are comfortable. I always carried my kit using this ruck high up on my back. A lot of people don't know how to properly wear a pack. Great demo as this applies to many other back packs as well.
+Mr. Tolly (AKA: fatmantolly) Thanks Bro, Ya I have seen that many times, and thought I would try to explain the difference.
I did basic training in Saint Jean sur Richelieu Quebec using this rucksack and still use it today for bushcraft. Great explanation, great pack and way underrated! Well done on the explanation man. I never seen the ruck before you got yours. thanks again man.
+Kullcraven Bushcraft Thanks Bro, it was fun to show it...
We never wore webbing when using the ruck, the webbing was draped over the ruck.
I was looking at one I saw on-line at an Army Surplus store out west. It was slightly used. I didn't buy it then and now it's gone. I'd rather see the used gear before I buy it.

I dig it!
When I was in the Canadian forces back in 95 we threw the web gear on the ruck, of course this was non tactical scenario. Former Argyll
Former 11bty here, next parade square over - around the same time. We also secured our webbing to the outside of our ruck for ruck marches.
Thanks Peter. I found if your 5'7" and up. Your good to go. But if you're 5'5". You maybe be put in a tank or something. Lol. Cheers 🍻 bro.

pretty sure your gut is supposed to stay behind the webbing
