Thanks for telling us about the Gary Gibson series, I've not read him before but it sounds pretty interesting. Good luck overcoming the insomnia!

If you’re dealing with sleep issues try L-theanine. It is found in chamomile and green tea. Calms the mind in general and does not make you drowsy. Or you can get the capsules from grocery stores which one capsule equates to 5 cups of either of the previously mentioned teas. I live by this and dont go a day without it.

Dinotopia! My god , that is such a blast from the past!
I had that very same book and it was amazing... Unbelieveably perfect for fantasy, with gorgeous illustrations!
The TV show just couldn't capture the same magic.
Great Asimov find, also! I'm so jealous right now!

    C. L. Moore worked closely with her Husband Henry Kuttner. Many times unaccredited and vice versa on Henry's books. Each have there their own strengths and style. I learned this from Steve over at Outlaw Bookseller

      @sciencefictionreads  6 місяців тому +3

It could very well be that a lot of these stories involved collaborating with Kuttner. But that would be a shame as it may suggest i wont like his writing when i get to him. Hope not!

Insomnia is really debilitating, I've had a touch of it from time to time. Think of it as training for when the baby arrives? The Gibson books sound good, not read any of his yet. stay frosty Matt. 👍

Babies are totally exhausting. But everything always gets easier by the 3s. By the third day you can usually go home from the hospital. By the third week the baby is starting to sleep at night. By the third month they're sleep is in a normal pattern and you can have a routine again. By the third year they no longer run around touching everything and trying to murder themselves constantly.
Make it three years and you will survive parenting *maybe*. LOL

Another great vid, Matt. You always inspire me to read again. I've not been on much of a reading mood since January this year and have tried to read 3 of my Westerns since, two of them I read the first few chapters of 2 to 3 times. I enjoyed what I read of each of the books but couldn't get myself in the mood to sit down and read them. Your videos always help me get in the mood. And I always love that you read Space Opera and types of Science Fiction I like and not just the authors or the books other SF booktubers read. I haven't read any science fiction for past 3 years but again you inspire me to pick up the genre again after other SF tubers and their discord servers made me choose to put it down

Too bad about Judgement Night. I have a copy and was excited about it. I'll read it one day anyway.
Dinotopia! I loved that series. It's not horror. Those smart dinosaurs were pretty cool. R
eminds me of West Of Eden by Harry Harrison (not at all in the Stainless Steel Rat vein).
Those Asimov covers you've never seen have to me the feel of early Eighties reprints. I had a slew of Heinlein books in that style.
Thanks for the description for the Gary Gibson trilogy. It just can't enter my mind right now. My TBR is so high it hurts my neck to look at the top of it! 😜
Currently enjoying House Of Suns and the adventures of your cat's namesake, Purslane. As the reading goes, more names based on medicinal herbs pop up: Betony, Valerian, and one I forget.
Edited to remained focused on SF. My insomnia advice should appear with the original edit in your notifications.

Landis is indeed very good. He wrote one novel, Mars Crossing, wich is worth checking out. Final Days by Gibson has a sequel called Thousand Emperors. It's pretty good. Check out his Extinction Game trilogy, particulary the first one wich is great.
Titan is second novel in Baxter's NASA trilogy. It's a stand - alone. In my opinion it's the weakest of the trilogy, other two are Voyage and Moonseed, but it's still Stephen Baxter novel, so it's a must read.

I just received Impact Parameter in the mail just now and I'm waiting on Stealing Light to come in the mail. I appreciate the overview you've provided here.
    Warning, some venting to follow:
To be fair, I've been really really disheartened with modern SciFi. In the 90s, I could walk into Barnes and Nobel and pick up just about ANYTHING on the New Science Fiction shelf and be pretty happy with it. Now I can't. Practically everything, and I mean EVERYTHING on those shelves is some sort of witch/urban magick blended with contemporary setting and then maybe a steampunk flair to it or something, or it'll be an "unexpected" "subversive" LGBTQ+ twist on a classic narrative trope that's obviously just pandering, or it'll be a very very thinly veiled allegory for the world we live in right now with zero aspects of timelessness or deeper thought. Hard SciFi is no longer on those shelves. "Big Idea" SciFi is rarely on those shelves. Pulpy military sci fi, buck rogers sci fi, or space opera is no longer on those shelves (unless it's an already established name like Weber or McDevitt).
It's really sad. I feel like an alien looking at the scifi section. I'm like "who are these books written for?" They aren't written for me, that's for sure. But they also don't seem written for anyone which is why those sections in the physical book stores are probably getting smaller. Though it makes me wonder if people are just losing interest in SciFi overall. Some days I wonder if my own SciFi writing is for nothing, for no one, for no audience. *sigh*
And I'm sorry, I guess now I'm in a venting mood. But I'm also tired of being told that I'm some sort of "-ist" if I don't like the current offerings from my originally favorite publishers. The notion that people who are broadly read in SciFi are any kind of "-ist" of any variety is laughable and bizarre. We are often the least included people in society who are also some of the most accepting and tolerant and open minded. I mean, I read a whole series written by a black lady about threesomes with aliens. AND IT WAS AMAZING BY THE WAY!!!

I feel you!!! I rarely go to my local "New books" book store because the SFF section is 75% fantasy and the SF is not my kind of thing at all. Hard SF is practically non existent on the shelves, as is anything vintage other than HG Wells pretty much. So, like you my source for newer SF that appeals to me is often booktube.
You could have left out the mention of Butler and I'd Still know which series you were talking about! I loved that trilogy and also need to read more by her! The only other thing of hers I've read is the short story Blood Child, which was also great.
The state of modern SF publishing isn't great, but I'm thankful I've been on this multi year mission to collect older SF, and now have years worth of reading at my fingertips. Old is gold!
And thanks so much! I created the channel to draw people to the older and in my opinion usually better, SF. Thankfully since then a lot of other channels have popped up that also focus on the good stuff! I really appreciate the kind words!

@@sciencefictionreads I'm hard at work on my own fiction. I sometimes get discouraged not because I think I can't write well, but because I often feel like I don't know who I'm writing for. I say to myself, "does anyone care about these kind of stories anymore? Who is gonna read this? Does anyone want to read this stuff anymore?"
I mean I keep trucking along writing stories I would want to read but man is it discouraging. But channels like yours give me hope. Even if it's not a lot of people, there's a few dedicated readers out there who do appreciate it. So again, saying it one more time. THANK YOU for this channel.
