It still blows my mind that there are people out there who still think that HIV / AIDS is caused by casual contact. If that had been the case I should have been sick a long time ago because I have had friends who were still here and some weren't who are hiv-positive. Quite the contrary and we want to identify the REAL causes, one of which were the NA drugs like AZT,
Now you asked for a peer-reviewed reference to the number of deaths due to AZT, (and of course the dosage variation is only one of many variables in this factor). Though I can't provide a direct reference, I can base that estimate on about half of the roughly 500,000 AIDS deaths with about 50,000 per year average between 87 and 94-95 (When PIs came out) But we do have the Concorde Study in 1993, and the eventual admission that high dosages of NA drugs alone were at best of "no help" and even (as the package warning states CAUSE HIV disease) even causing AIDS deaths by prescription.
So the package black box warnings were correct.
I have known about 12 AIDS patients in my life that took AZT and even later the HAART treatments None of them are alive.
Most ended up like Kimberly Bergalis. The only survivors I have know did NOT take the drugs.

I was a RX technician in the 1980s. AIDS killed a friend and a Dr. I knew. It's how Hospice came about also.
When news reports first aired in 1981 I remember being so confident that our government would quickly find a vaccine/cure and we would bid farewell that this terrible disease.
