  • When you first get out your snow blower after its been sitting all summer and fall long a lot of them have a hard time starting and some of them don't start at all like this one. What am I show you in this video is a repair that I do 80 percent of the time that fixes the problem of a snow blower or any kind of outdoor power equipment that has been sitting for a period of time. With today's fuel which is considered to be old by manufactures after 30 days the fuel causes a lot of problems with flow through the carburetor and its small passages into the cylinder this repair will cover 2 stroke and 4 stroke outdoor power equipment. And although your snow blower may not be listed here it will cover quite a few different models such as Toro, Ariens, MTD, Yard Machines, craftsman, snowflite, Cub Cadet and many others. What I show in the video is a quick fix to get your snow blower running most of the time after you've done this repair in the way that I show in this video the snow blower will continue to run just fine but there is a chance that more steps may be needed to ensure that the mower snow blower tractor whatever it is you're working on run consistently and starts effortlessly each and every time.

    Thanks for the video! I was about to take the carb off and clean it since it sat for 2 years. Thought I emptied the tank and run it out, but I guess I didn't. Never needed it last year. Carb cleaner in the gas line got it cleaned up and it runs great again! A big thank you!!!

    Way to go my man! Drained all gas, disconnected tube from under the gas tank and sprayed carb cleaner. Blew thru tube then sprayed a little starting fluid in tube reconnected and 2 pulls , started up. Well done sir

    You are a genius!!! I have a Toro snowblower that’s been sitting for 3 years! I replaced the plug and put some fresh gas. Of course, after pulling it about a million times, it still wouldn’t start! It was then I came across your video. And thank God I did. I did exactly what you stated in the video. But, it wouldn’t start. I applied one more application primmed the primmer bulb and it kick over and started. I was in shock! It started! Wow! You just saved me a couple hundred of dollars. Thank you so much for posting an awesome video.

    I saw your video on fixing lawn mowers Briggs & Stratton carb cleaning and getting the darn thing going. Lo & behold, I followed your instructions and got it going. Me, all left thumbs. Thanks. You made it simple by not wasting time on repetitive things.
    Now I was going to put my snow blower away but I thought I would fix it first (it would work for a few minutes and stop, during winter).
    I saw you on this video and knew that you would set me straight. Will follow thru and post when done. Sr citizen here, so not in a hurry and I don't expect snow till December.

    I have a Toro like the one you are working on. It had been laying for a while but I had to go a little further than you. The fuel was getting to the float bowl ok but the pick up tube or "jet" which picks up the fuel from the float bowl was blocked solid with some white residue. The fix was getting a wire ( I used a wire from a bread wrapper ) and ran it through like a pipe cleaner. If you have this problem you can diagnose it if the snowblower starts by priming it but doesn't stay running. Thanks for the vid!

    My snow blower was like the one you worked on only with a twist. After a few years, my SB stopped working. When I took it apart, I found that the fuel line was incorrectly installed at the factory. Who ever put it together, installed the fuel line and "pinched" it so that the fuel flow was already partially obstructed from Day 1. So, after a few seasons, the partially obstructed fuel line became completely obstructed. The fix was simple, took the fuel line out, cleaned it and reinstalled it, the CORRECT way, with no bends. ;-)

    Good job Foxboss nice video, I enjoy people helping people, so thank you for that! I would like to add 2 things that are important in keeping your machines running good, number 1 is use 91 Grade gas in all of your yard and outdoor machines, 91 Grade will not create water causing serious starting problems, never use 87 grade, 87 grade can and will clog and gum up your carburetor, even rusting out your carburetor and gas tank if not plastic, number 2 starting fluid was made for Diesel engines but is sold as a gas engine starter also, In my training starting fluids is a "No No" for gas engines, the reason is it will quickly dry and can cause damage to your engine, therefore we were taught to use a better starting product, almost everyone has heard of and use this product before, Yes you guessed it! { WD-40 } It starts your machines the same as regular Starting Fluids Except it does something better, that is it Lubricates instead of drying out and not causing wear damage, keep up the good work.
    One other thing, If using a fuel stabilizer it should be important to use the best, " STAR TRON ENZYME FUEL TREATMENT " should be on your maintenance list, it will stabilize your fuel, clean up your fuel system with it's Enzyme power, causing your engine to run better, it will keep your gas fresh, buy at Home Depot, Amazon, etc.

    You are da man. I had 4 years small engine repair in high school ( eons ago ). Anyways my toro 418 zE only ran if i kept pushing prime to keep running. I knew it was carb issue but used your compressor trick at very low psi into gas line and the cleared the needle and seat Thanks for the huge hack trick saved me time and money. Note after a year of owning this blower it only runs on full choke most of the time Any tricks ideas how to fix that without replacing carb ? Thanks again

      Wow, had it started in 20 minutes! I already had the cover off from last repair attempt, primer bulb was crumbing, I replaced bulb and plug. I blew on the hose, it was plugged. Spray carb cleaner in the hose. Then removed the hose and used daughters mascara brush that has very soft bristles and pushed it in the brass inlet. There was minor resistance and it popped in. Sprayed in the inlet, put hose back on, sprayed more in the hose. Blew in it and no blockage. pushed the primer and the cleaner sprayed out the hose. Primed 3 times and started after 4 pulls. Thanks!!!!

    My Toro 421QR has not started for the last 3 years. I haven't looked into trying to get her started until last week. I bought some starter fluid and sprayed it where the intake opening would go & she'd run for the first 3 seconds then fail. I attempted that about 10x more and the same result. It would need me to yank the pull string several times before it turned and then died. I am going to buy a can of carburetor cleaner and spray directly in the gas-line like you suggested (passed the fuel filter) and see if that'll start her up. It's my fault as I never put any fuel stabilizer into the tank as it went into storage and gummed it up I'll bet. There was a recall on my model about 4 years ago and not sure if they will still warrant the recall and fix the issue originally posted. I guess I'll and give the retailer a call and try... Thx!!

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 років тому +1

      Call Toro for them to do the recall first. I'm not sure what the recall was for(probably fuel runout/leak = fire/unsafe) that's what most Outdoor power equip. recalls are normally. Possibly the recall requires some attention to the carb that will clear up your issue... If not at least your safe..
      Then you can tackle the not run problem.. try the videos instructions,,, if it won't start Then continue on
      3 years sitting equals varnish for sure. Drain all the old fuel out of the tank.. Drain all the fuel from the carb bowl(there may be a push button valve relief on the bowl (next to the bowl mounting screw) If Not you'll have to remove the bowl ,careful not to tear bowl gasket or you will have to run to mower shop to get another(not expensive, just pain in butt) spray and wipe out bowl. spray exposed carburetor underside where bowl would have normally covered, take small strands of wire and run up thru main jet and any holes going into the round body where the main jet screws up into. good luck

    Great video, I normally drain the tank and carb after the winter season is over. However it's not a good idea to prime the bulb with gloves on, it could rip it, then you would have another reason why it wouldn't start.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  7 років тому +2

      Not sure how much more damage my gloves could do to a brittle primer bulb compared to my bare finger but, if the primer bulb can't be primed with gloves on a snowblower it is probably time to replace it anyways,, Even though people have been draining their tank/carbs for decades successfully ,,I am not a fan as I like the idea of having treated fuel keeping gaskets and seals from drying out..seafoam is pretty good at doing that..

    Love your videos.
    I have a blower very similar to the one in your video( Toro Power Curve 38195)
    I rebuilt the carb New Float bowl and gasket, needle valve and spring, needle valve seat. new float bowl mounting bolt.
    The engine runs great one pull usually to start. my problem is gas will drip off the bottom of the float bowl when not running.
    I made sure the needle seat is all the way down and the ribbed side is on the bottom. the float bowl spring is facing towards the hinge and the float moves easily up and down with the needle. float level is good (Checked space with 11/64 drill bit)when I lift up the blower like you do to see the carb better, gas flows out like crazy. I cant tell if it is coming out of the top of the float bowl or the main gasket for the carb mount to the engine. Any Ideas

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 років тому +1

      I did use my air gun connected to my compressor which was turned down to only 12 psi. But if you want you can try with your mouth as a human can generate almost 14lbs of pressure blowing. Try carb cleaner in the line first to allowing it to work on the varnish that may have the inlet needle stuck.

    • @robertrhine2402
      @robertrhine2402 6 років тому +1

      Hey Fox Boss. Very nice video. If you can show how to blow the fuel line in the future that would be good. (Some of us don't have a compressor but would try to do that blowing by mouth.)
      Also, you might want to suggest to your viewers they try cleaning the spark plug, too. I took it out after watching your video and found it was kind of blackened, so I sanded it a bit. That was the trick for my dead Toro snowblower!
      So many thanks for showing how to take apart the panel of a snowblower and showing where the spark plug lies - it sometimes is a really easy fix. (Especially for those of us who are not one with gasoline engines!)

    Great vid. Wish i could've seen you dismantleing the parts. But that's ok. My question is this: How can i spray starting fluid into the carb after drilling a hole into the bottom cover (under the choke handle)? I saw another vid that had a guy do that to 'jump' start it, and I am unable to get it to start. That and my starter's pinion gear isn't catching so I have to pull start each time. Going to remove the bottom cover and check the fuel line as you did. I was going through the top, and only got it apart at the handle, as the bolts towards the impeller are rusted together. Most snow blowers have an opening of some kind to access the carbs intake air horn. You may not be able to spray directly into the carb but you can get pretty close /it doesn't take much of the more volatile carb spray to get it to run. With that said I prefer to remove the lower cover so I can see what's going on in there. Good luck.

Thanks for your help,ps how to ck if locked up or not or pull starter jammed!?

      Make sure auger spins freely by hand... If so, pull spark plug and check that cylinder isn't full of gas... If that is clear then do what you can to turn engine by hand to see if it locked up or stuck..

      To be honest with you, If you lived in the area(NE Ohio) , I would just have you bring it on over. I believe that any reputable repair shop would put the linkage back on for you for next to nothing.. You may want to check around and call local mower/small engine shops. you may be surprised how open they will be with their scheduling this time of year.. Hardly any snow and definitely Not the mowing season

    Hello, I bought a used Toro 2500 snowblower
    Put fresh gas in, mixed 50:1. replaced fuel filter and plug. It fired right up.
    A week later, I tried to see if it starts. ..Nothing! I checked to see if there's spark and there is. I took off the carb and cleaned it. Still wont run.
    Am I missing something, any Ideas?
    Should i try fire starter? if so where should I spray it at?
    thanks

      If it runs on carb cleaner or starting fluid then 95‰ of the time you have a fuel delivery problem.. As far as spraying the fluid you need to get it into the air intake on the carburetor BUT, beware that you only need a little short burst and backfires are possible.. good luck

      Foxboss9 , Thank you for the reply. .. I was able to get it started again. I took out the plug, sprayed it with carb cleaner. left plug out to try and dry out the cylinder. The carb was also flooded. Clamped and took off the fuel line from the carb. Put plug back in. Was able to start it for a few seconds without carb cleaner. Put fuel line back on the carb and started up and left it run a while... staled once, cleaned out carb again as it had a little gas backing up again, drained from taking the bowl off... wouldnt start again. but ah ha! this time it would help if i turned the key on... started up left it run with no stalling.
      now, either im getting too much gas when primed or Im doing too much.... and or its time for a carb rebuild. tomorrow I shall try a cold start up and see... fingers crossed. If for some reason its the primer possibly flooding the carb.. I may just have to prime it with carb cleaner.. idk..
      Thanks!

      TMR make sure the needle and seat are in good condition and the float is adjusted correctly.. as far as priming you should need half as much pumping of the bulb to get it to start in warm temperatures..

    I have this snow blower except no electric start. How hard do you think it would be to put the started in? I would have to drill the hole in the panel for the button, but thats fine. I have had the unit for 15 years now and I just do not like the look or the price of the new ones. But alot has also happened to me and my body in the last 15 years and it is hard on me to pull start these machines. What do you think? Im sure I can find the starter on Ebay.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 років тому

      You should be able to just bolt it on. But you will need to take a look at the blower housing for an opening and also the flywheel as to make sure it has a ring gear on the perimeter. Of course in addition to the starter you will need the 110v wiring and the push button/plug assembly.. Good luck.

    So I'm having rhe same issue, but I wonder: when you push the Primer, is there supposed to be something spraying out the side? Bc that's what happens. I press the priker bulb, but something jets out the side.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  4 роки тому +1

      If you push the primer bulb enough times fuel will eventually drip from the carburetor opening. That is normal. But if you only push it once. And fuel is coming out immediately Then you most likely have a faulty fuel line that runs from the primer to the carburetor and it needs repaired. Most of the time the fuel line will deteriorate close to where it connects to either the primer bulb or the carburetor. So all you have to do is just trim a little fuel line off and place it back over the fitting As there's extra length to accommodate that.

    I have a TORO 2000 Snow Thrower. I was able to remove the bottom cover. I removed the small screw over the carberator and sprayed thru the screw hole the carb cleaner. Maybe 3 or 4 sprays. Is this enough? TORO still didn't start. The gas line from the carberator to the fuel tank is not one continuous hose as in your video. In the middle there is a round connecting piece. I can't seem to remove that or any part of the gas tank. I have a photo but don't know if I can upload here. Any info is appreciated. I can't get the TORO started just like in your video. New gas and oil mixture was just added a few days ago.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  4 роки тому +1

      That round piece that connects the two hose pieces together is a filter. Make sure that the gas is coming out of the tank and traveling through both pieces of fuel hose and the filter and making its way into the carburetor fuel Inlet where the hose connects to. If you spray carburetor cleaner directly into what they refer to as the air horn, that's the part that all the air enters into the carburetor and ultimately into the engine. It should only take a couple of bursts of spray for the snowblower to at least sputter or make some sort of a noise like it's trying to run. If not then there is an issue with the ignition most likely meaning the spark plug or some other sort of ignition problem. Make sure that the snow blower is definitely turned on.

    Keep in mind that regular gas contains alcohol, which over time can attract moisture. Premium gas along with a gas conditioner can store for a year or longer.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  6 років тому

      Tom n all gas premium or not that contains ethanol causes moisture to be attracted and retained... Marine fuel (can be found on pure gas app) will allow a greater life of the fuel while in storage...

    • @tomn5880
      @tomn5880 6 років тому

      Most gas stations in Minnesota carry Premium non Oxygenated (alcohol free) gasoline for use in small engines. (Not all, but most) There will be a sticker above the nozzle stating such. We have a lot of motor boats, snowmobiles, jet skis, snowblowers and lawn mowers. The no alcohol gas costs more but when used in a small engine an owner/operator won't have the fuel problems like with alcohol gas.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  9 років тому +1

      Well the fact that it is spinning could be a plus, that should mean the starter motor is good.. You'll have to remove the starter and check the gear on top that engages the engine flywheel, could be all the teeth are sheared off or broken. If so thats a cheap fix to buy a replacement gear, (If Available) or kind of expensive if it's not sold separately. If younot sold separately, you'll have to buy a new starter motor with the gear already installed. I doubt the flywheel teeth are the issue that is pretty rare. Good Luck..

      Cindy Happel not turning over and not starting his two different things. If the engine is not turning then you have a starter issue most likely especially if you try pulling the cord and it's jammed. If it however is cranking but not starting then follow the steps in the video. It only takes 30 days for gas to be considered old and when snowblower sit unused All Summer Long a varnished carburetor is a very high probability.

    I would be very careful doing this, carburetor cleaner is great at eating rubber seals in the carb. If using this method I personally would run gas through this right away to rinse out all the cleaber

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 років тому +1

      +G&R Landscaping Carb cleaner will soften rubber seals, briefly.. However, it will evaporate way faster than it takes to break down the plasticizers in the rubber. Try it out, take the needle(if it has rubber tip) and seat o-ring(if equipped) and drop into a jar or container with carb cleaner.. It takes a long time for them to be affected. The only time I have issue is if I pull the carb bowl off and try to reuse an old bowl gasket(rubber) that should have been replaced anyways. The worse part about using carb cleaner in the manner that I mention is, If you don't do as I mention(using small spray burst) and instead continuously run the 2 stroke machine on the cleaner you will cause the engine to eventually fail as the carb cleaner offers no lubrication needed for the 2 stroke to survive. Now getting carb cleaner on plastic trim pieces or paint is another thing entirely, You will have immediate issues with that..

    • @rgebes222
      @rgebes222 8 років тому +1

      Foxboss9 I take your word it will work, from my experience whenever I get carb cleaner on carburetor bowl gaskets they like to swell up and they don't seal properly. I've rebuilt many small engine carburetors so I'm just saying I would be careful and make sure this doesn't leak, especially if it is somebody else's equipment. It's not a bad idea, I might end up trying in on my own equipment sometime
